Mom squeezes my hand and straightens her shoulders. "Whatever happens next," she says quietly, "we face it together."
For a minute, I believe that might actually be true.
"He's already suffering," I tell her, and then explain what I'd done in a little more detail. Looking at it now that I've calmed down, I worry that I may have gone too far, but the look of happiness on Mom's face washes that away almost instantly. Maybe I did go overboard on him, but then again, he deserves what he gets for all the pain he's caused over the years, for every lie, every betrayal, and every tear that was shed because of him.
