The twilight hours of Friday eventually bled into a crisp, moonlit night. After a long, successful afternoon of ground patrols and easy socialization with the townspeople, the metropolitan commercial district had finally quieted down. The neon signs of the high-rise shopping centers cast long, vibrant hues across the sweeping concrete plazas, and the cool night breeze rustled gently through the trees.
Hiro, Nozomi, and Tokoyami walked a half-step behind Hawks as they neared the conclusion of their final shift. The day had gone on beautifully, filled with nothing more than low-level street monitoring and comfortable banter.
Then, without a single syllable of warning, the entire midnight atmosphere turned heavy.
At the apex of the tallest structure in the district—a massive, ninety-story corporate glass skyscraper that pierced the clouds—the night sky violently fractured. A thick, deeply vibrant purple gas began to plume outward from the roof in massive, heavy waves. It didn't dissipate into the wind; instead, it cascaded over the parapet like a dark, unnatural waterfall, rapidly creeping down the glass facade toward the sleeping streets below.
"That's no industrial accident," Hawks said, his casual demeanor vanishing instantly as his massive crimson wings flared wide against the backdrop of the moon. The feathers rustled with an intense, military sharpness. "We don't know the chemical properties of that smoke, and I'm not letting it hit the civilian sectors. I'll contain the descent from the outside. Interns, get to that rooftop immediately and neutralize the source!"
With a single, powerful downstroke of his wings, Hawks launched himself into the air, rocketing upward to position himself directly beneath the descending cloud. He began generating massive, calculated cyclones with his wings to force the gas upward, keeping it away from the pavement.
Hiro, Nozomi, and Tokoyami didn't waste a heartbeat. They bolted through the skyscraper's ground-floor entrance, sprinting up the emergency stairwells with a fluid, rapid pace. Because they were moving at maximum velocity, their steps echoed sharply against the off-white walls until they finally slammed their weight into the steel roof doors, bursting out into the howling midnight wind.
The rooftop was completely awash in a thick, choking violet haze. Standing directly in the center of the shifting plume was a man in his mid-twenties. His wild, silver hair whipped erratically around his face, and his pitch-black eyes were wide with a completely manic, unhinged expression. Thick purple vapor was actively pouring from the open palms of his hands, feeding the cloud above.
"They gave me a second chance!" the man screamed into the void of the night, his gaze locking onto the three teenagers as they advanced. His voice was raspy, completely untethered from reality. "I was powerless! An absolute nobody! A quirkless extra! But look at me now! I have a quirk! I'm going to give this whole city a taste of their true, hidden potential!"
"He's completely lost his mind," Tokoyami grunted, his dark cloak flexing as he dropped into a defensive stance. "Dark Shadow, bind his limbs!"
The shadow entity erupted from his chest, utilizing its newly optimized velocity to streak across the concrete like a black arrow. But the silver-haired man was impossibly agile. With a series of unnatural, flexible contortions, he leaped completely over Dark Shadow's claws, using the ventilation units as springboards. As he flipped through the air, he snapped his palms forward, releasing a dense, high-velocity blast of the purple gas directly at the team's position.
The three interns scrambled backward, carefully navigating the rooftop piping. Because they had no idea what the biological effects of the smoke were, they couldn't risk a direct hit. Tokoyami tried to coordinate a series of long-range shadow strikes to pin him down, while Nozomi unleashed a swift volley of her golden ribbons to trap his ankles, but the villain continuously retreated into the dense, blinding fog, using the purple haze as a physical shield.
"You can't stop the future!" the villain shouted, dropping low and slamming his palms flat against the roof.
A sudden, violent expansion of pressure erupted from his hands, creating a massive, localized shockwave of purple smoke that completely engulfed the entire ninety-story rooftop in a split second. The fog became so thick that sight was entirely cut off.
Instinctively, realizing the danger, Dark Shadow whipped around and completely wrapped its dense, shadowy form around Tokoyami's nose and mouth, acting as a living respirator to save him from inhaling the unknown substance.
Hiro and Nozomi, however, were caught dead in the center of the expanding wave. There was no space to retreat. Both of them took a deep, involuntary breath of the heavy purple vapor, the thick mist filling their lungs.
They stood completely still for a long, tense beat, waiting for a toxic reaction, a burning sensation, or a sudden drop in their vitals. But nothing happened. Their lungs felt perfectly clear, their heart rates remained steady, and their baseline stamina didn't falter in the slightest.
Nozomi narrowed her black eyes through the thick purple haze, her five black tails swishing with an intense, quiet focus. 'It doesn't feel toxic,' she sent through their telepathic link.
'Agreed. No physical damage,' Hiro replied, his matching black eyes sharpening as he fell into a low, predatory crouch. 'If it can't hurt us, let's end this farce right now.'
Deciding to risk the up-close combat since the smoke carried no physical harm, the twins moved in together with absolute, terrifying speed. Hiro executed a high-speed stride, his form blurring completely as he bypassed the silver-haired man's erratic movements, instantly reappearing deep inside his personal guard. Before the villain could even raise his hands to counter, Nozomi stepped in from the flank, delivering a swift, heavy kick directly to his midsection. Combined with Hiro's crushing grip on his collar, the raw physical force easily knocked the man out, slamming his unconscious body hard against the cracked concrete floor.
The villain lay completely still, out cold, but the thick purple gas didn't stop. It continued to pulse out from his skin in heavy, rhythmic waves, filling the air around them.
Tokoyami took a careful step forward through the mist, Dark Shadow still wrapped tightly around his lower face like a protective mask. He reached his hand up, preparing to peel the shadow away so he could speak to his classmates.
"Tokoyami, stop! Keep your face covered!" Hiro barked sharply, his voice completely stripping away his usual relaxed, playful tone.
Tokoyami froze instantly, his crimson eyes widening in confusion behind the shadow mask.
"We are Kitsunes, not standard humans," Nozomi explained rapidly, her breathing steady but her five black tails tensing behind her leather gear. "Our bodies possess an active, immortal fighting mechanism and an entirely different biological baseline. Just because our systems handled it doesn't mean it's safe for you. Don't risk inhaling even a single breath of this stuff."
Just as the words left her lips, a sudden, violent jolt tore through the twins' tethered souls.
The change was incredibly subtle at first—a deep, unholy warmth beginning to boil directly within their core energy reservoirs. But within three seconds, the internal reaction became blindingly visible to the naked eye.
FWOOSH!
Massive, uncontrollable waves of silver and purple soul-flux began to violently erupt from their bodies. The sheer velocity of the energy spike tore through the fabric of their clothes, scorching the reinforced concrete beneath their boots. The ambient temperature on the rooftop began to fluctuate erratically, dropping to freezing levels before spiking into a suffocating, heavy heat.
"What... what is happening to your energy?!" Tokoyami shouted, his voice muffled behind Dark Shadow as he was physically forced to take three steps back. The absolute, crushing weight of their overflowing power was radiating outward so hard that the heavy glass windows of the upper corporate floors began to crack and shatter from the sheer atmospheric pressure.
Hiro gripped his own chest, his teeth grinding in pure agony as the veins across his arms began to glow with a blinding, volatile silver light. The pure, unchecked mass of his power was expanding at a velocity his brain couldn't compute.
"The smoke..." Hiro gasped out, a cold sweat breaking across his forehead as his black eyes flared. "It doesn't attack the body's organs. It's a cellular accelerator for quirks. It forces an absolute, maximum output boost... but it completely strips away the brain's ability to control or suppress the baseline."
Nozomi fell to her knees, her pitch-black eyes wide and intense as her five black tails thrashed wildly, leaving deep, melted gouges in the structural steel beams of the roof. "Tokoyami... you can't breathe this in. If a normal human with a standard quirk inhales this, their power will literally expand so fast it will tear their own body apart from the inside out."
She looked up at her brother, her voice strained to its absolute limit as the silver aura rolled off her skin in heavy waves. "Hiro... we've been holding back our true power for so long... hiding our real metrics so we wouldn't break the system... But this boost... it's unlocking everything at once. We're losing the seal."
Hiro took a single, instinctual step forward to try and stabilize his sister, attempting to exert every shred of his mental discipline to forcibly suppress the overflowing energy.
CRACK-BOOM!
The millisecond his boot touched the floor, the raw, uncompressed mass of his physical output shattered the thick, reinforced concrete roof entirely. The structural steel beams snapped like toothpicks beneath his weight. Without even triggering an active attack, the sheer, passive density of his single step caused him to crash straight through the ceiling, falling violently into the dark, empty corporate floors below as the tower began to structurally fail from within.
High above the building, Hawks hovered at a safe distance, his face turning pale with absolute dread as his feathers logged the cataclysmic energy spike mutating the skyscraper. He couldn't get closer without risking his own feathers being dissolved by the expanding purple cloud, leaving the twins trapped inside a self-destructing cage of their own massive power.
