Chapter 8 - Aiding Karma

Y/n Pov

After waking up and showering, Silva greeted me as I came downstairs, asking if I slept well. I nodded and returned the question, which she answered with a fond smile. "Best sleep I had in a long time, anyway, would you like eggs and bacon for breakfast?" She asked, to which I said yes, heading into the living room.

As I sat down, the book I started yesterday floated into my hand while Silva wasn't looking. 'The rewards are still pending, so might as well kill some time.' Flipping to the page I stopped on, I picked up where I left off, getting through a couple pages before a screen appeared in the corner of my vision.

'Convenient timing, wonder what I got?' Glancing at the screen, I was a little annoyed with what I read, but at the same time I understood why.

[Due to Player growing stronger over a period of time within the dungeon, Stat point will not be given as a reward this time.]

'Still annoying though, hope the other rewards at least make up for the lack of Stat points.' Mentally swiping the notification, I was greeted with a list of rewards, a smirk formed without me knowing as I read through them. 'Ok, this more than makes up for it.'

'Even if the bonus to my stats is small, they all come in handy.' Swiping the screen away, I was about to pull the Item Box out, but felt a stab in my head, forcing me to tilt my head back and see the bottom of a pate, right as it hit my nose. "Really" I mumbled as I grabbed the plate, Silva giggling softly as she apologized.

"You were so focused on your book, I couldn't resist." She stated, sitting beside me as I closed the book, setting it aside. "Anyway, thanks for breakfast, smells great." I complimented, digging in, and I wasn't surprised. It wasn't too salty, the eggs were perfectly cooked, and the bacon was crispy.

'Just proves I need to get better at cooking, this is delicious.' I thought, enjoying the meal as Silva ate hers, smiling the entire time. "Don't try to reach my level so soon son, let mama bear enjoy cooking for you." I nearly choked on my food, staring at her for a moment. "Did... Did you just read my mind?"

She looked at me with a smirk, biting into a piece of bacon. "I raised you Y/n, it's my job to know what you're thinking." I groaned softly, shaking my head, a slight chuckle escaping as I went back to eating. Once we were finished, Silva asked what my plans were for the day while she was at work. "Gonna visit Alice... been a while since I last saw her."

Silva's eyes widened in surprise, her smile faltered slightly as her hands fidgeted. "It has been a while, hasn't it..." She trailed off, staring at the ground, a small frown formed. Seeing her expression, I moved closer and hugged her. "Don't try to blame yourself again mom, you weren't there when it happened, and it's not your fault."

"I know son... it's just hard." She muttered, her hands clutching my shirt tightly. I patted her back, saying everything will be alright and that Alice will pull through. "She is as stubborn as you after all." I stated, which made her laugh a little, saying she's more like me in that regard.

"Well, you best not keep her waiting, tell her I said hello." She stated, getting up and taking the dishes. I thanked her for breakfast and quickly changed before leaving the house. Once I was a fair distance away, I turned invisible with Phantom and sped off, heading to the hospital.

Once I got there, the nurse at the front desk looked up from his computer, doing the usual procedure before telling me the room number, and I headed up. As I got walked through the halls, I could hear everything in the hospital, machines beeping, patients coughing, and the staff doing their jobs, but I blocked them out as I stood outside the room.

Opening the door, the first thing that greeted me was the sound of the heart monitor, the next was the scent of disinfectant, and the last was the sight of her, laid out on the bed, a breathing mask over her face as her eyes were closed. I shut the door and moved to the chair by the bed, pulling it closer as I sat down, looking at her.

I sat there in silence for a while, unsure of what to say. "Hey Alice, it's Y/n, just thought I would stop by and see you. Sorry I haven't visited lately, been busy." I paused for a moment, rubbing the back of my neck. "Mom says hello, hopes you'll be awake soon." I looked out the window, letting out a small sigh.

"I miss you a lot, and I know you're still alive, but I wish you were awake. We could hang out, play some games, and go out like we used to." I chuckled, turning my attention back to her. "I feel like you would drag me to that shrine again, though I wouldn't mind it to be honest."

A smile tugged at my lips as the room became quiet, the only sound coming from the machines and heart monitor. "I love you sis, never forget that." As I got up, my gaze lingered for a moment, wishing she was awake and healthy again. 'Maybe one day, we'll get to spend the day together like before.' With a heavy sigh, I turned and headed to the door.

'I love you too... Y/n...' I froze for a second, did I imagine that? Looking back, I saw Alice still laying there, the machines and monitor showing no changes. "Must be losing it, guess I need more sleep." Muttering to myself, I left the hospital and went for a walk through Kuoh to clear my head, not sensing the warm gaze on my back.

After some time, I ended up at a cafe and decided to pop in and grab a drink. As they made my drink, I picked up a newspaper they had and scanned the pages, skimming through it. 'After being in that dungeon for so long, things out here feel dull.' I thought, reading an article as my drink was set down, thanking them before taking a sip.

As I flipped through the pages, my eyes widened slightly at the picture on the page, my hand tightened around the paper as a small bit of anger flowed through me. 'No fucking way.' I glared at the man in the photo, my rage slowly growing the more I stared, though it was suppressed by Gamer's Mind.

Even though it had been two years, his face was the same as it was then, his black hair slicked back, his cold grey eyes, and his arrogant grin, the man responsible for Alice's comatose state. 'If it weren't for his family, he would have rotted away in prison, but instead, he gets to walk around as if nothing happened.'

I was brought back to the present as my phone buzzed, seeing it was a message from Suzaku. 'Wonder what she wants, must be related to the supernatural.' Opening it, my suspicions were confirmed as she requested my help. After leaving a tip, I sent a text back and headed off to the area she gave me. "Hope something is there, I need to let off some steam."

Timeskip - Narrator Pov

Y/n had arrived at the location Suzaku sent, which was the old industrial area. He stood on top a warehouse, looking over the area where he met and assisted Kaien Shiba, though it was a brief encounter, he hoped he could meet the man again. He was soon pulled from his thoughts as he heard a man and woman scream, glancing to where the sound came from.

'Guess it's showtime.' As he made his way over, a young couple were face to face with a grotesque woman, while her face showed her beauty, the rest of her body was that of a monster, bat-like wings flapped as her clawed hand grasped the girl's throat, her serpent tail coiled around the boy, forcing him to watch. "P-Please let us go." He stuttered, fear in his voice and eyes.

"Shush! Your voice annoys me!" She shouted, tightening her grip as the girl coughed, gasping for air. Yet the next moment the woman crashed into a container outside, courtesy of Y/n kicking her, sending her through it. He used his telekinesis to free the couple before he struck, setting them behind him. Before they could utter a word, he knocked them out with a weak burst from his Bloodlust skill.

"What the hell!? Who dares strike me!" She roared, ripping her way out, her eyes glowing bright red as she glared at Y/n, who simply walked towards her, hands in his pockets. "Looks like you can take a hit or two. Good. I need to let off some steam." Y/n stated, his Bloodlust increased slowly, the air chilling slightly.

The woman froze for a second, her instincts telling her to run, but her body refused to listen. "What... Are you?" She muttered, unable to take her eyes off him, yet as she blinked, he was gone. 'When did-' Her thoughts were interrupted as a fist slammed into her cheek, the sheer force sending her into a pile of containers, denting them. "So you're a Stray Devil. First time seeing one."

----------------------------------

[Stray Devil]

Rank: C+

Race: Devil

----------------------------------

She glared at Y/n, baring her fangs, yet he simply stood there, waiting for her to make a move. She rushed forward, claws stretched out to strike, yet her eyes widened in fear as a greatsword appeared in his hand before he hurled it at her. She narrowly avoided it, the blade pierced through a container completely.

"You missed, human." She taunted, but was silenced by a fireball hitting her face, her screams echoed out as she flailed wildly. As the flames died, she glared at Y/n, seeing his relaxed posture. Leaping into the air, several magic circles appeared around her, unleashing a barrage of wind blades.

As Y/n dodged them, his right eye held a red tint as he glanced over each magic circle, studying them. 'Already know these symbols, just a bit more advanced than the basics.' He thought, icicle spears manifested and shot forth, forcing the Stray Devil to dodge and weave between them.

Y/n didn't stay idle, appearing beside her with fire focused into his fists. Each strike broke something while the flames burned her skin, the only saving grace was her regeneration, but it couldn't keep up with the damage. "You bastard!" She screamed, slamming her clawed hand into him, her nails dug into his skin as she threw him to a container, but he flipped and landed on his feet.

"Think that's enough, played around enough." He stated, cracking his neck as his wound closed up. The Stray Devil was confused by what he meant, but soon learned as he pointed his thumb to the side, making her look. His greatsword flew right at her, moving so fast she couldn't react in time as it pierced through her chest.

While he was fighting earlier, he kept Monolith airborne with his telekinesis, having it fly to him at the perfect moment. "How could... I lose?" She wheezed out, falling to the ground, the blade returning to Y/n as he looked down at her, raising his hand a large fireball took form. "Any last words?" He asked, the woman coughed up some blood, staring at him in fear.

"Wait! I give, I'll join your side!" She begged, holding her arms up in defense. "What?" Y/n asked, a little surprised at her sudden change. "If you spare my life, I can help you. I'll serve you faithfully!" She stated, her eyes pleading as Y/n looked over her, thinking for a moment. As he looked away for a moment, she smirked, gathering what strength she could and lunged at him, only to pass through him

Her smirk was replaced with terror as she saw Y/n behind her, glaring at her with his eyes glowing. "Bad move." He uttered, and she was burned to ash as the fireball crashed down onto her, scorching the ground. 'At least I was able to blow off some steam.' Y/n thought, seeing his clothes were a bit damaged and brough out a Repair Kit to mend them.

After checking up on the couple and giving them minor health potions just to be safe, he moved them to a secluded spot before heading home, hoping they would believe it was a nightmare. Once he got back, he picked his book up and laid on the couch, reading from where he left off.

After a couple hours, he placed the book down and turned his console on, loading Dark Souls to continue where he left off. Normally he was thankful that Gamer's Mind didn't fully inhibit his emotions, but this was one time he wished it did. He was currently stuck on Ornstein and Smough, killing the latter each time since he wanted Ornstein's armor.

He had lost count how many times he died, and he refused to look up a cheese build. This run was his closest yet, both he and Super Ornstein were on a sliver of health, one good hit and either of them would die. "Come on... Come on..." He muttered, seeing the boss get low, he rolled out the way, dodging his stab, and swung his sword in turn.

"Got you!" Y/n cheered, laughing triumphantly as he closed the game, satisfied with his progress. "Nothing beats this feeling." As he made himself a light snack, he thought of different builds he could have tried against the bosses, before wondering how he would do against them. "Might be fun experience since I don't have as many limitations like the game character has."

As he ate his snack, the landline rang, the phone flew over to him and hovered next to his ear, answering it. "Hello, Y/n speaking." He answered, at first he heard nothing, only the people talking in the background. "Hey son, just calling to check up on you." Silva's voice came through, and he could hear the concern in her tone.

"I'm fine mom, just got back a few hours ago, how's work?" He asked, knowing there was another reason she called. "Same as usual, I'm not doing Ryuya's workload, so don't worry." She replied, causing him to smile a little, but he could tell something was bothering her. "You sure? You seem worried about something." He said, hearing her tense for a second.

"It's nothing dear, just..." She sighed in defeat, knowing he could read her like an open book. "On my way to work, I saw that article today. I figured you might have seen it today as well." She muttered, the silence that followed told her she was right. "I am angry, but I know to not try anything." He stated, which made her sigh in relief.

"Thank goodness, I was worried you would go after him." She muttered, but he could tell something was off, and asked what was wrong. Silva sighed, jokingly asking how he could read her so well. "I'm your son, I know when you're acting different." He replied, a small chuckle coming from her.

"Fair. I'll tell you, but I want hugs when I get back, deal?" She asked, earning an agreement from him, and he waited. "While on break, I realized I forgot my lunch, so I decided to get something from the store. On my way back, I saw him and his friends." She trailed off, taking a deep breath. "They spotted me and cornered me, trying to flirt with me. Thankfully my coworkers came to the rescue before they could touch me."

Gamer's Mind kept his anger at bay, though his eyes held an eerie glow. "As long as you're ok mom, though I'm hoping those idiots get hit by truck. Actually, make that a car, don't want them getting isekai'd. Though, it would be hilarious." He chuckled, his joke making Silva laugh a little.

"You always make me laugh, even in tough times." She giggled, before taking a breath. "Anyway, I should finish the rest of my shift. See you later dear." She said, hanging up as Y/n did the same. Placing the phone back, his eyes grew cold as he clenched his teeth. 'Welp, his luck has ran out. Karma is taking its time, so might as well speed it up.'

While people went about their day, be it working or shopping, most felt a shiver down their back for a brief moment, but didn't think much of it. As group of young men walked down the sidewalk, waving their drinks around as they laughed and talked loudly. "Shame we couldn't have some fun with that chick, her body was hot."

"True man, she was definitely a milf, you see her tits." One said, making the others smirk as they imagined what they would have done. "Forget her, there's plenty of babes just as hot, we'll have fun with them later." The leader said, brushing his black hair back, his friends agreed before they all spotted some girls ahead of them.

"Check them out man, perfect bodies and cute faces, bet they are virgins." One whispered, licking his lips. "Definitely virgins, why not have a taste." Another added, the group smirked as they followed behind the girls. Stepping out the shadows, Y/n watched them from a distance, his hands in his pockets as he followed.

He spent the better part of an hour looking for them, running around Kuoh at top speed, utilizing Phantom to remain invisible while using wind magic to keep the wind calm, preventing a small windstorm to be caused by him. Once he found them, he followed them until they were in a secluded area. 'This has been a long time coming, you need a reality check, Haru.'

"Hey ladies, wanna join us for a party." Haru asked, his friends smirking as they surrounded the girls, who were startled by their sudden appearance. "Sorry, but we have to go." One spoke up, her voice held a bit of nervousness as she and her friends tried to leave. "Oh come on, why not stay and chat, we can have so much fun together." Haru grinned, grabbing the girl's wrist.

"Ow, that hurts. Let go." She whimpered, pulling her arm to no avail. She tried to slap him, but Haru caught her other wrist. "C'mon babe, your body is perfect, how about a quickie." He muttered, leaning closer as his friends held the other two, his grip was tight as she struggled, begging him to let her go. "Stop it." She muttered, tears building in her eyes.

"She said no, now let them go." A voice came from behind the group, causing them to look. Y/n stood a few feet away, his kitsune mask on, his posture relaxed, yet his presence was oppressive. "Who the hell are you, their boyfriend or something?" Haru asked, annoyed that his fun was interrupted. "Are you deaf or you just a manchild? Not surprising considering mommy and daddy spoilt you, buying your way through life, even when you commit a crime."

Haru's face became red in anger, he glared at Y/n, who had taken a step closer. "Who the hell do you think you are, speaking to me like that!" He shouted, yet Y/n ignored him, juggling a stone he made with one hand. "Must think you're a tough guy, guess you need a lesson. Beat this creep and show him his place." Haru ordered, his friends smirked as they pushed the girls back, who took the chance to run.

"Getting others to do your dirty work, how pathetic." Y/n said, flicking the stone with some force behind it, hitting one in the forehead, causing him to stagger. The rest charged at him, but Y/n easily disposed of them, though he held back reluctantly. One was thrown into a wall, blood dripping from his head, the second kicked into some trash cans, the third knocked out by a knee to the gut.

The last guy finally reached him, and attempted a haymaker, but Y/n ducked under and delivered a solid uppercut, knocking him into the air before grabbing his ankle and slammed him into the ground. Haru stared in shock at how quickly his friends were beaten, then turned his attention back to Y/n, he looked at him with a bored expression.

"I knew I would be disappointed, but this? It's so pathetic, I almost feel sorry for you." He spoke, shaking his head as he turned away. Haru gritted his teeth hard, clenching his fists tightly. "I'll show you pathetic!" He roared, brandishing a gun and aimed at Y/n. He pulled the trigger, but instead of blood, Haru saw sparks in the air as Y/n now faced him.

"Wanna try again?" Y/n asked, Haru pulled the trigger multiple times, but the result was the same, the bullets were destroyed midair as Y/n stepped closer. Once he was at arm's length, Haru noticed a dagger in Y/n's hand, but he wouldn't focus on it for long as he grabbed the barrel, placing it to his forehead.

"Go on, shoot me. Can't possibly miss me now." Y/n taunted, silently enjoying the look of fear in his eyes. Haru didn't reply, his hand shook violently, his finger trembled over the trigger, but as he pulled it, all that came was a click. His face paled at the sound, realizing his gun was empty.

Y/n simply smirked, backhanding Haru hard, knocking him to the ground. As Haru got back up, he pulled a knife out, but his hands shook as Y/n was no longer where he stood. As he looked around frantically, an unseen force tore the knife from his hand, the weapon clattered on the floor as he scrambled for it.

Before he could reach it, his hand was stomped on by a boot, a pained scream leaving his lips as a crunching sound came from his hand. Y/n stood above him, his foot pinning his hand, glaring down at him. "This is the most pathetic thing I've ever seen, you couldn't even lay a scratch on me, and here I was thinking you could at least fight back."

Haru glared up at him, baring his teeth. "Shut up! Once my family finds out about this, you'll be arrested, and I'll be free." He declared, only for Y/n to kick him in the chest, sending him crashing into the wall. Flicking his wrist, the knife floated into the air, then shot towards Haru's leg, embedding itself.

Haru wasn't given the chance to scream as Y/n grabbed his face, squeezing slightly, and slammed his head into the wall, stunning him. "What was that? I couldn't hear you over the sound of me not caring." Y/n asked before pulling him close, subconsciously letting his Bloodlust and power surge, making Haru's blood turn cold.

"Tell me, how does it feel to be helpless? To know you can't do anything as you're at someone's mercy?" Y/n whispered, his eye glowed red, his gaze bore into his soul, making Haru unable to speak. "Do you feel the same terror your victims felt? How they struggled and begged for you to stop, hoping you would listen." Y/n shoved him away, holding his dagger out as he focused fire magic into it.

"Time to say goodbye, scum." Y/n muttered, Haru begged him to stop, his eyes filled with fear as his words fell on deaf ears. "P-Pl-Please, d-don't. I'm sor-ry, just let me go." He cried, tears streamed down his face, Y/n ignored him as the blade ignited. Haru screamed as the blade came down.
