Chapter 2 - Chapter 2 - Awakening

"Ah... No"

Ava Nui startled awake, covered in sweat and twisted up in her bed sheet. Lifting her head she looked around the room; her eyes filled with awe. Blinking again her foggy consciousness struggled to fathom the scene before her. Wasn't this her old bedroom, the one in the apartment she had lived in just after her parents had died and before the apocalypse began? Sitting up and turning to the window she gazed outside; morning light was seeping through her curtains along with the noise of people and traffic. Noises she hadn't heard in years.

Buzzing on her left jolted her out of her haze. Her Alarm was going off, reaching over to turn it off she read the date: August 14, 2042, 8:25 AM.

Her phone buzzing again with the weather app, it warned of high temperatures, reaching upward of 30 degrees today. Realising it must already be 25 degrees in the room Ava stood to turn on her fan just to get a breeze on her damp skin. Suddenly realising she wasn't dead left Ava stunned, wasn't she just bleeding and in agonizing pain. It all couldn't have been a horrible dream. The pain was to real the details of the years of the apocalypse to clear to have been dreamed up in heat induced delirium. No, she was sure she was back in time, reborn into before the world fell apart.

Checking her phone again she thought about the date, it was currently mid August and the blistering heat of summer would abruptly end when the rains came in September, the extreme seasons weren't new to anyone since they had become more erratic over the last decade but these rains would signify the start of the end. That gave her just over a month until things would start falling apart. It would start with the rain, so much torrential rain over weeks and on the overly dry ground it quickly leads to flooding. All the low-lying areas would be consumed in days, anything below six stories would begone in under 10 days and after that the earth truly seemed like a water world. After that winter would turn the flooded water into icy tundra lasting over a year before the thawing and then insects, plague, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and tsunamis before falling into polar days, she had died during this period so having knowledge for the next 4 years was something but she would have to think about what could potentially come after the polar days.

Heavy exhaustion hit Ava right then, the quick flash of joy she felt when waking disappeared into bone deep weariness. Could she do this all again, the disasters one after another, the relentless worry and effort it was going to take to survive again. Walking into her bathroom she jumps in and has a cold shower, the fresh water shocking her out of her depressive thoughts. Of course she could, this time would be different, she had time now. Time to plan and organise before the disasters strike, time to stock up and prepare for what's to come. Sighing deeply, she jumped out of the shower and felt lighter, that's when she noticed a circular mark on her wrist, only a shade darker than her already pale skin. Sitting on the inside of her right wrist was what looked like the outline of the coin she was holding in her hand before she returned. Running her thumb over the new mark she quickly remembered the warm feeling in her head from before and closed her eyes. Right then she could see a space in her mind, in the space was a 2-acre green field and a plain concrete building which seemed to have 4 basic rooms, kitchen, living room, bathroom and bedroom. She pondered that's strange why have a house with living space if she couldn't enter. With that quick thought she was suddenly stood in the empty living room in the concrete building. Walking around she quickly noticed the building had lights and taps which must mean it has electricity and water, then walking out into the field she squatted down to scoop up some of the dirt, it felt damp and cool in her hand. Seemingly perfect for planting.

Ava couldn't believe it, was this real, isn't this like having an ultimate cheat code for the upcoming disasters, she started wondering how long she could stay in the space, what were the rules exactly, did time pass the same way, could living things exist inside. Taking a deep breath, she thought these are all things she could think about later but right now she needed to figure out how to get back to her apartment. Again, in a blink of an eye she was returned to the exact spot she had been before stood in her bathroom. Heart pounding Ava thought that was easy enough, just thinking about being in the space was enough for her to move there, she went in and out several times checking it worked before realising how tired this was making her. This was going to take some practice and effort which hopefully will make it less tiring down the line. But the fact that with a mere thought, she could perceive everything inside the space gave her a deep sense of comfort. A place entirely of her own, completely safe from others made her smile.

To start with she should test its functions, things like how much time she could spend in there could wait until later but for now she went to her kitchen and experimented with both boiling water and ice cubes. Placing them in both the house and the field. It seemed within the house time stood still and preserved things the moment they entered and the field seemed to match the time outside. Thinking how useful these functions would be moving forward brought a smile to Ava's face. But there was no time to dwell she had plans to make and things to do. Smiling as she prepared herself for her first day after being reborn, she thought that with the space and this second chance she would change her fate.
