God works in mysterious ways; whether you actually understand them is a completely different story.
Raditz was clutching his head in throbbing agony. His bruised brain was in such a complete haze that he could barely process a single coherent thought. He tried to force himself up, only to nearly collapse from the sheer, blinding pain.
Grit biting his teeth together, he drew a deep, ragged breath.
He looked around, but his blurred vision met nothing but walls of polished, cold metal.
As confusion threatened to swallow him whole, his attention was violently pulled elsewhere. Beyond the metallic dome encapsulating him, muffled roars and screaming echoed through the air, punctuated by thunderous explosions and the pungent, copper stench of fresh blood and burning metal.
The classic, winning combo of absolute misery.
The surrounding crowd was just as repulsive—a sea of deformed, mutated spectators covered in sickening pink splotches and grotesque growths.
[Flash-Forward: Planet Vegeta — Approximately Three Months Later. 10:05 AM]
"Prepare yourselves, you wretched worms!" the imposing King of the Saiyans roared from his podium.
"Today, we begin our preparations to obliterate those damned Frost Demons!" he declared, his voice booming across the plaza. "And with their demise, Planet Vegeta will rise supreme! The Saiyans will reclaim their rightful place as the absolute strongest race in the universe!"
Following his brief, fiery speech, the King took his seat upon the throne as one of the chief royal scientists stepped forward to brief him.
"Our intelligence network has gathered sufficient data regarding Frieza," the scientist reported swiftly. "His current coordinates, his elite guard numbers, and—if I may say—most importantly... his absolute battle power."
King Vegeta watched as his most loyal elite warriors flushed with excitement at the prospect of crushing the feared tyrant. Resentment and deep-seated hatred burned in their eyes—a sight that brought a dark warmth to the King's heart.
In his mind, King Vegeta was already calculating how to carve up the galaxy. Everything would belong to him. His insatiable greed would finally be satisfied—at least for a time. And best of all, his reign would endure for eternity.
Yet, while the King plotted his grand revolution with the utmost discretion, he was completely oblivious to the snake slithering right beside him.
Nibock, a brazen royal scientist, was standing nearby with an un-modified scouter fastened to his hip. Foolish at first glance, perhaps—but in reality, he was a rat feeding information to the highest bidder. A traitor.
[Flashback]
Nibock had been utterly furious over his subordinates' repeated failures to capture that persistent thorn in his side: that irritating half-breed kid who kept disrupting his plans time and again. Nibock wanted nothing more than to wrap his hands around the boy's neck and choke the life out of him.
However, being weak in raw combat strength, Nibock always relied on underhanded tactics and expendable lackeys to do his dirty work.
His deceitful nature had started back during his days at the Technological Academy. He was far from the brightest student and would have certainly failed had he relied on his own merit. But thanks to a simple-minded, exceptionally strong classmate whom he manipulated, he sailed right through.
He carried those habits into the University, plagiarizing his entire graduation thesis from an exceptionally gifted classmate.
And later, in his professional career, he pulled off his greatest heist yet: stealing the blueprinted designs for a specialized shock weapon and an advanced tracking module.
Thanks to his accumulated "achievements," several high-ranking figures eventually took notice of him...
The great and powerful King Cold had never trusted the uncivilized monkeys. In his eyes, a species so barbaric and self-serving was, at best, a minor nuisance—a stubbed toe on the galactic stage.
Yet, despite his outwardly condescending demeanor, a quiet kernel of dread lingered deep in his heart regarding those proud primates. He feared the ancient legends. He feared an uncontrollable, latent power.
Because of this, the Cold emperor sought absolute leverage. He knew that while weak prey could hide from grand predators, they could never hide from their own kind. A cat can always track a cat, and a tiger can always hunt a tiger.
The Emperor already knew where to begin. First, he turned one of King Vegeta's strongest elite warriors into his personal double agent. Then, a report from a particularly malicious individual caught his eye.
"Nibock, was it?"
The scientist was groveling at the tyrant's feet, practically kissing the floor.
"Y-Yes, Your Supreme Eminence!" Nibock chimed, executing the pose of a seasoned bootlicker.
"You shall serve as my eyes and ears among those monkeys."
King Cold lifted his foot, allowing Nibock to look up. Catching the cowardly greed in the scientist's eyes, the tyrant smiled—confident he had chosen the perfect rat.
[End of Flashback]
There were defining moments in Bardock's life that left permanent scars on his soul.
Falling in love with Gine was one. Raising Raditz through unconventional means was another. But the moment that shook him to his core was Frieza's cold, calculated betrayal.
"DAMN IT!" Bardock screamed in fury, cradling the battered body of one of his teammates. "Hang on! Just hang on, I'm getting you out of here!"
The last remaining member of his crew leaned heavily against Bardock's back, coughing violently as the cold void of death crept over him.
"B-Bardock..." Shia wheezed out, blood spilling past his lips. "I... I have to tell you..."
"Don't speak, Shia! Save your strength!"
His comrade offered a faint, bloody smile, fighting back another coughing fit.
"I'm... I'm sorry, Captain... it's too late for me..." Shia whispered, his voice trembling. "F-Frieza... he's going to destroy us... he's going to destroy the whole planet..."
With those final words, the light vanished from his eyes. Shia went completely limp. Panic seized Bardock as he shook his comrade's shoulders, screaming at him to hold on, begging him to stay alive.
But the dead do not answer.
Grit biting his teeth, Bardock refused to leave him behind. He scooped up Shia's body, but before he could take a single step, a violent explosion tore through the dirt, throwing him across the wasteland and separating him from his fallen friend.
Bardock hit the ground hard, rolling to his feet instantly as raw rage consumed him. He snapped his head up to face his attacker.
Standing amidst the clearing smoke was the unmistakable form of Frieza's top enforcer.
"Dodoria... you bastard!" Bardock snarled, his vision swimming with rage. "Is it true?!"
Dodoria, ever the sadistic psychopath, revelled in the Saiyan's agony. To twist the knife further, he sneered with sickening delight:
"Are you asking about your precious little planet getting blown to dust? Or whether I was the one who slaughtered your pathetic squad?"
"YOU SHAMELESS MONSTER!" Bardock roared, hurling himself at the pink alien. He unleashed a furious torrent of punches and kicks, but Dodoria effortlessly parried every single blow.
Gathering every ounce of his remaining Ki into his palm, the Saiyan captain unleashed his ultimate blast. "I'LL KILL YOU!"
The blast detonated in a blinding flash, kicking up a thick plume of dust. But a split second later, a sharp scream of agony echoed through the canyon.
Dodoria stepped through the smoke completely unscathed, casually catching Bardock's blast and crushing the Saiyan's hand until the bones nearly shattered.
"What's the matter, monkey? Never killed on orders before?" Dodoria mocked cruelly. "If you're such a hero, why don't you try saving your friend over there?!"
Dodoria raised his free hand and fired a point-blank lethal beam straight toward Shia's body.
"NO!" Bardock screamed. Forcing his body past its limits, he blurred across the dirt, scooping up his fallen comrade a fraction of a second before the energy beam struck. A massive crater swallowed the landscape in a blinding flash.
"Dammit..."
Bardock lay flat in the dirt, every muscle in his body burning with intense pain. His instincts had saved him by a hair's breadth. For once in his life, he felt a strange sense of pride in being fast on his feet—though his Saiyan pride would never allow him to admit it out loud.
He dragged himself upright, glanced over at Shia's lifeless body, and let out a heavy sigh. It was going to be a long day. Yet despite the absolute nightmare unfolding around him, his thoughts immediately flew back home—to his family, and to young Raditz.
Reaching up, he pressed the activation switch on his scouter. The device flickered, emitting static-laced satisfy-beeps before a automated priority broadcast cut through the speaker:
<< ATTENTION ALL SAIYAN PERSONNEL CURRENTLY ON AND OFF-WORLD >> a cold, metallic voice echoed. << BY DIRECT DECREE OF KING COLD AND LORD FRIEZA, ALL UNITS ARE ORDERED TO RETURN TO PLANET VEGETA IMMEDIATELY. >>
A sharp beep signaled the end of the transmission.
Bardock's heart dropped into his stomach. Raw dread washed over him.
"No... Damn it!" he roared in sheer desperation. "Gine... Kakarot...!"
Driven by pure paternal instinct, the Saiyan scrambled to his feet and sprinted out of the cavern. Before leaving, he fired a small Ki blast into the ground to cremate his fallen comrade, whispering a quick farewell.
He ran as fast as his legs could carry him until his strength recovered enough to take flight. Within seconds, Bardock reached his pod and launched into space at maximum speed.
Elsewhere on Planet Vegeta, young Boiton was crouched inside a hidden underground shelter.
"Dammit... that petty excuse for a King is ridiculously vindictive..."
PAK! A sharp smack landed right on the back of his head, leaving a sizeable bump.
"That's why I told you to just leave me in the detention block, my boy," an old man named Valentino chuckled softly.
"Ow! Hey!" Boiton whined, rubbing his sore head.
"Ugh, you two are unbearable with all this sentimental nonsense," grumbled Sisly, the resident grumpy old tech. "What's next? A duet? A musical? Hamlet? Give me a break."
Boiton and Valentino gave Sisly a synchronized glare before ignoring him.
"Now then, Boiton," Valentino said gently, changing the subject. "Tell me more about this young master of yours."
Boiton's face brightened, a grin returning to his lips. "He's insanely powerful... and insanely annoying."
Valentino chuckled softly; it seemed the kid started almost every story about Raditz with that exact same phrase.
"I remember watching him fight off two elite warriors at the same time... and how he outsmarted that entire alien fleet right before we got captured..."
Boiton's voice trailed off. His eyes darkened, his hands tightening into frustrated fists against his shirt. Valentino pulled his adoptive grandson into a warm embrace, waiting for the trembling to stop.
"He's... without a doubt, one of the most terrifyingly strong people I've ever met," Boiton sniffled, a tear trailing down his cheek as he looked up at Valentino. "And... he's my first real friend... Do you think he's going to be okay?"
"You said he was strong, didn't you?" Valentino replied softly, giving the boy a reassuring smile. "He'll be just fine."
Sisly rolled his eyes with a heavy huff, clearly preferring the kid in focused survival-mode rather than crying like the child he actually was. Muttering under his breath, the old tech turned back to an imperial datapad, frantically entering override bypass sequences.
After taking a moment to gather himself, Boiton stood up in front of the two old men, his eyes burning with determination.
"ALRIGHT! IT'S TIME FOR PLAN EPV!"
All three exchanged resolute nods, shouting in unison as they prepared for execution.
"Dammit, dammit, DAMMIT!"
Raditz ducked and wove through a relentless barrage of energy blasts as a bloodthirsty audience roared from the arena stands.
He jumped, flipped, bounded off the walls, and crashed back onto the dirt floor.
"Ngh... AHH!"
Hissing in pain, he rolled across the ground just in time to dodge a brutal slam that shattered the reinforced floor beneath him.
An imposing, monstrous behemoth let out a deafening roar...
PAIN.
The dark-haired Saiyan gasped for air, his face battered and bloodied. His eyes were swollen purple, his lower lip split and dripping blood onto his chest. To any outside observer, the poor kid looked like he was standing on death's doorstep.
Yet, for some bizarre reason, his heart was pounding with insane adrenaline, a flush of wild excitement colouring his bruised cheeks.
"Stop... you damn monster...!" Raditz wheezed out.
Perhaps he had been hit in the head so many times that he'd sustained a severe concussion. Or perhaps his Saiyan blood had simply taken over completely.
Taking blow after blow, Raditz's mind felt completely hazy, as if the entire world were spinning on an axis.
Dammit...
The onslaught suddenly ceased. For the first time since the fight began, Raditz felt his body go light, drifting upward into the air.
"Agh... my head..."
The grotesque alien crowd continued to cheer for their champion—the most feared, savage gladiator in the arena: ZAGĢŘ the Destroyer.
Raditz's thoughts were a jumbled mess. Deep down, he knew there was an urgent reason he had ended up in this place—something infinitely more important than his own survival waiting for him out there in the galaxy. But what on earth had he forgotten?!
"Goal! Pure euphoria! We regret to inform you that you were not selected for the adoption program... Pain! Run, kid! Hey, why don't you pick on someone your own size?! A surge of bravery and heroism..."
"Kid... what kind of Saiyan are you?!"
"Oh yeah, it's Dragon Ball time! Happiness! Come on, you can do this... Error!"
"Now THIS is new..."
"Okay, okay, okay, I've made up my mind!" a cheery voice echoed in his head. "Run toward me!"
Raditz opened his eyes, his vision still swimming. His Saiyan blood surged with violent excitement, driving his broken body back into battle stance.
"Grrrrr..." he growled out like a cornered beast.
A surge of dark green energy erupted around his body once again. His half-healed wounds tore open, blood dripping onto the arena floor as the violent aura thickened and darkened into a deep, sickly hue.
Like a enraged bull, he launched himself straight at his opponent, turning his body into a living missile.
CRASH!
At first, the mighty ZAGĢŘ felt what seemed like nothing more than a painful bug bite. But when he attempted to swing his arm, a sharp, blinding agony shot up his shoulder.
The giant looked down in absolute shock, letting out a roar of pain.
The tiny insect had somehow disabled his massive arm—green, bubbling blood was pouring onto the floor, sizzling as it ate through the metallic ground.
Turning his gaze downward, ZAGĢŘ saw the kid biting furiously into his foot. Naturally, it did virtually zero physical damage, serving only to thoroughly annoy the beast.
With a growl, ZAGĢŘ grabbed the boy by his long hair and hurled him across the arena like a ragdoll.
The crowd erupted into deafening cheers.
"ZAGĢŘ! ME STRONGEST!" the beast roared, pumping his remaining good fist into the air.
"Kid?!" the voice in Raditz's head yelled in a panic. "Escape or you're dead!"
"DEATH! DEATH! DEATH!" the crowd chanted in unison.
The situation was dire. If the young Saiyan took one more full-force blow from the monster, it would be his absolute end.
ZAGĢŘ reveled in the crowd's bloodlust. While the surprise attack that crippled his arm had startled him, a broken limb was nothing compared to the absolute pulverization waiting for his little punching bag.
"YOU WANT DEATH OF LITTLE FIREFLY?!" ZAGĢŘ bellowed to the audience.
"DEATH! DEATH! DEATH!"
"DEATH IT IS!"
The giant titan smirked sadistically, locking his sights on the battered Saiyan lying in the crater. With two massive leaps, he cleared the distance, extending his smallest, sixth arm to scoop up Raditz's broken body.
"FIREFLY... DIE!"
The giant squeezed his fist shut. Raditz let out a strangled gasp as his bones began to creak and groan under the crushing pressure.
CRACK!
Agony flooded Raditz's senses. The pain was so intense that his vision went black, and he slipped into unconsciousness.
As his mind drifted into the dark, Raditz felt a freezing sensation—impotence, rage, and agonizing defeat. But just as his consciousness began to fade completely, something extraordinary happened.
His skin took on a distinct purple hue, and a violent, emerald flame ignited deep within his chest.
Like gunpowder meeting a spark, his Ki exploded outward in a blinding, emerald glare!
ZAGĢŘ's sadistic smile vanished. He felt an overwhelming pressure pushing against his grip—his toy was breaking free! Panic flickered in the giant's eyes, but his pride refused to let go.
Roaring in fury, the monster exerted all his strength to crush the boy once and for all!
"Kid..." the voice panted, sounding completely drained. "I'm getting you out of here!"
A blinding flash of radiant magenta light enveloped the entire arena, blinding the crowd and the giant alike.
When the light faded... Raditz was gone.
The arena fell dead silent. The crowd erupted into furious jeers, and ZAGĢŘ let out a deafening roar of rage.
"GUARDS!"
Hours passed...
Inside a cold, dimly lit chamber aboard an unknown ship, a subtle violet glow illuminated the dark.
Raditz lay motionless on a central platform, covered head-to-toe in specialized medical bandages like a mummy. A warm, purple aura floated around his body, gently stabilizing his vital signs.
Suddenly, a heavy mechanical door hissed open. A squad of armored guards swept into the room, searching the dark corners—yet they found nothing and quickly moved on.
As the hours stretched into days, the subtle violet light slowly faded.
A tall, slender entity floating in a deep meditative posture opened his eyes, looking down at the young Saiyan. The entity—a being known as the Old Purple Man—showed no signs of exhaustion, though a hint of intrigue flickered across his face.
"The sun warms the seas and turns them to vapor," the old entity recited poetically. "And that vapor rises into the sky. Tell me, cloud... do you wander the heavens all day, or are you merely a lazy fool playing dead?"
Raditz's ears happened to be uncovered. Upon hearing the strange poem, his ears turned slightly pink. Though still disoriented, the ominous presence beside him gave off a strange, soothing warmth.
Sweat trickled down Raditz's neck—a high fever was running through his body. Weakly, he raised a trembling arm, reaching his hand toward the floating entity.
The Old Purple Man raised an eyebrow at the boy's persistence.
Interesting... the old being thought to himself. Despite the kid's foolish battle against the gladiator beast earlier, he had certainly left an impression.
Deciding to test the boy further, the Old Purple Man unleashed a wave of warm magenta energy, enveloping Raditz once more. The energy flowed with incredible precision—calm, warm, and distinctly alive. It began rapidly repairing the boy's shattered body, wrapping him in absolute comfort.
"Do not resist," the entity instructed softly.
Raditz's mind was far too exhausted to put up any meaningful resistance. Warmth flooded his pores, soothing his aching muscles.
The Old Purple Man began chanting an ancient incantation, repeating the words rhythmically.
Raditz's body trembled as his internal Ki began to synchronize with the old entity's energy. Before the old man's eyes, a distinct transformation occurred: the magenta light slowly seeped into the child's mind, lulling him into a deep, peaceful sleep.
Inside Raditz's mindscape, a vivid replay of his fight against ZAGĢŘ began to play out. But just as the giant was about to crush him, the scene dissolved completely.
The blood-stained arena vanished, replaced by a breathtaking blue sky filled with soft pink clouds.
"A blue sky...?" Raditz wondered aloud in his dream, staring up at the clouds. "It looks... insanely similar to Earth... But wait... what IS Earth?"
A strange sense of familiarity washed over him, accompanied by a wave of confusion. He tried to grasp the memory, but it slipped through his fingers like sand.
Looking around, he noticed subtle differences.
Seven suns and five distinct moons hung visibly in the sky—which felt entirely wrong. Earth only had one sun, didn't it? Or was it three? He couldn't remember. Furthermore, the grass beneath his feet was snow-white and rigid like polished metal.
"Of course you don't remember, my young Saiyan," a voice echoed behind him. "You have a small gap in your memories... a side effect of my technique."
Raditz turned to see the Old Purple Man floating three meters above the white grass. Questions flooded his mind. How is he floating without using Ki? Why can't I sense a single trace of energy from him?! Is that even possible?!
The old alien shook his head softly. With a simple wave of his hand, Raditz felt himself lifted off the ground, bringing them eye-to-eye.
"A pleasure to meet you, kiddo," the old man said with a cryptic smile.
Before Raditz could ask another question, the world around them shifted, and he vanished...
[Planet Vegeta — A Few Hours Earlier]
"Officer Zarbon. Officer Dodoria," a sharp, high-pitched voice echoed through the command bridge.
The two elites bowed instantly before the hovering pod.
"Lord Frieza!" they responded in unison.
A cruel, chilling laugh filled the room as the floating pod slowly rotated around, revealing the terrifying emperor sipping a glass of wine.
Noticing their leader looking at them, both officers kept their heads bowed, waiting for his command.
"According to my father, King Cold... the time has finally come," Frieza purred, his eyes narrowing maliciously.
An overwhelming, suffocating aura erupted from his small frame, making his top enforcers tremble in sheer terror.
Frieza broke into a sinister, high-pitched laugh.
"The time has come to eradicate those filthy Saiyans once and for all!" he declared hysterically, his laughter echoing through the cold corridors of his flagship.
With only minutes remaining before his pod reached Planet Vegeta, Bardock was losing his mind.
"Faster, you piece of junk! FASTER!" he roared, mashing the throttle.
The second his pod slammed onto the landing pad, Bardock burst out of the hatch, flying at maximum speed toward his home. Dropping into his house like a bolt of lightning, he grabbed Gine and broke the news.
Gine, holding baby Kakarot in her arms, began to tremble violently. The realization of their imminent extinction left her in complete shock.
Seeing her fear, Bardock pulled her into a tight, loving embrace.
"You have to take Kakarot and leave for that planet I told you about," Bardock urged, his voice heavy with emotion. "Don't worry about Raditz... he's still out in space. I saw his trajectory. He's strong, Gine... he will survive this."
Gine looked into her husband's eyes, realizing with a sinking heart that he had no intention of escaping with them. Tears welled in her eyes, spilling down her cheeks as she held her baby close.
Meanwhile, in another sector of the planet, Boiton, Valentino, and Sisly were making their final preparations to launch.
Boiton spat a curse under his breath. The Emperor's fleet was scheduled to arrive in less than two hours, and there was nothing they could do to stop it. Frieza's power was absolute—not even every Saiyan fighting together could stand against him.
Raditz's words echoed in Boiton's mind: "Facing that monster head-on right now is suicide."
"DAMN IT!" Boiton roared, his Ki flaring in sheer frustration.
Valentino placed a firm, comforting hand on the boy's shoulder, calming him down. "Everything is going to be alright, son."
Nodding stiffly, Boiton swallowed his anger and resumed helping Sisly load the remaining supplies onto their ship.
Suddenly, a wildly familiar Ki signature flared nearby.
Boiton snapped his head around, his eyes widening in utter shock as he sprinted out of the hideout toward the incoming presence...
