Cornelia's POV
"Three thousand dollars?" The words tumble from my lips as I stare at them in disbelief. "Why would you give me that much money? What's the catch?"
David moves closer, his arm sliding around my shoulders with practiced ease. "You're family now, sweetheart. Working at some dingy cafe doesn't suit a Dolf."
I tilt my head back to meet his gaze, the height difference forcing me to crane my neck. "Just like that? You hand me a credit card with no conditions? No expectations? I don't have to earn it somehow?"
"Nothing required," David confirms with a nod.
I shake off his arm, my palms growing damp with perspiration. "I don't buy it. None of this makes sense." I crouch down to retrieve my bag from the floor, swallowing hard against the dryness in my throat.
A credit card with that kind of limit, handed over without question? Complete nonsense. I've learned to be practical about these things. Nobody gives away money without wanting something in return.
