Chapter 1 - Chapter 1. A Root of Bitterness

[In the end, you were ambushed on the battlefield of Amegakure (Rain Village) during the Second Great Ninja War. You were blown to pieces on the spot by an explosive tag.]

[Age at Death: Sixteen.]

[This life simulation has concluded. Final Evaluation: D.]

[Rewards Acquired: A small amount of chakra, C-Rank Ninjutsu: Fire Style - Flame Bullet.]

Shimura Yuta's eyes snapped open, a silent scream dying in his throat. He gasped, the air of his quiet room feeling thin and insubstantial. His heart hammered against his ribs, and a cold sweat clung to his skin.

For a moment, the phantom sensation of being torn apart still echoed in his nerves.

Six years. It had been six years since he'd been reborn into this brutal world of shinobi and he was born as a member of the dwindling Shimura clan.

It was a catastrophic start.

Without any advantage, surviving the meat grinder of the coming great wars seemed impossible.

He wasn't even sure he could survive the machinations of his own clansman, the infamous Shimura Danzō.

Why couldn't he have been an Uchiha, with their legendary Sharingan? Or a Hyūga main family member? Even a Sarutobi would have been a better hand.

But fate had dealt him into the Shimura deck.

The evidence of his misfortune was damning. Look at Hiruzen Sarutobi. After becoming the Third Hokage, he'd elevated his entire clan; by the Fourth Great War, they could field a thousand shinobi. And Danzō? The man wouldn't just fail to elevate the Shimura clan—he'd happily drain it dry for his own shadowy purposes.

Then, on his sixth birthday, his salvation finally arrived: the Life Simulation System.

It was his chance to live simulated lives, to learn from each iteration, grow stronger, and survive longer.

His final rating at the end of each run would grant him rewards. He would get one simulation every three months.

The horrific experience of being blown to bits he'd just endured was a freebie from a newbie gift pack. He still had one more chance left on the counter.

'But by the Sage…'

'I'm grateful for the cheat, truly. But did the simulation have to be so brutally vivid? I can still feel the pain of being blown to bits.'

He rubbed his sternum, the ghost of the pain lingering, and took a long, deep breath to steady himself.

His first simulation had been a lesson in mediocrity.

He'd been a civilian-born ninja, the son of a barely-competent Chūnin father and a Genin mother. With such unremarkable genes, he'd possessed no talent whatsoever.

A decade of grinding struggle had only earned him a wartime promotion to Chūnin, and his reward was to die with his entire family on the rain-swept fields of Amegakure.

His parents had been taken out by poison. His own end had been… less dignified.

He'd become that rarest of statistical anomalies—the second person in living memory to be genuinely killed by a standard-issue explosive tag.

'I take it all back, Nawaki. I understand now. Those things are no joke.'

Wasting one simulation wasn't a total loss. It was common sense: the free pull never yielded anything good unless you were willing to burn your lifespan for luck or something.

But this next run? He had to secure a higher rating.

Clasping his hands together, Yuta offered a silent prayer to any entity that might be listening.

A moment later, a fog clouded his mind, and when it cleared, a new consciousness flooded in.

[Load complete.]

[Character for this life simulation: Shimura Jō.]

'Another Shimura? The irony. Am I forever bound to Danzō's orbit?'

[You were born into Konoha's great Shimura clan, possessing exceptionally high talent.]

[You entered the Ninja Academy at six and graduated at seven, becoming a Genin. But when you returned home, overjoyed to share the news with your father, you found a masked man standing silently in your house.]

[He said to you: "Lord Danzō requests your presence."]

[Not knowing what was happening, you followed him to a dark, subterranean complex.]

[There, you met the man who would shape your destiny: Village Elder and Hokage Advisor, Shimura Danzō.]

Yuta's mind conjured the image perfectly: a middle-aged man, his right eye and arm heavily bandaged, exuding an aura of cold authority.

The sight made Yuta's own vision darken with a sense of dread.

[Danzō told you that your father had been a shinobi of Root, and he was also his nephew. You, therefore, were his grand-nephew. Your father had died on a mission. With his dying breath, he had asked his uncle, Danzō, to care for his only son.]

[Danzō agreed. He told you that the ones who killed your father were shinobi from Sunagakure.]

[He then asked you: "Will you become my subordinate? I will train you, mold you into an excellent shinobi, so that you may avenge your father."]

[You agreed without hesitation, joining Root and becoming Danzō's subordinate.]

'He's not human!' Yuta's thoughts screamed into the void. 'I'm only seven years old!'

He felt the future of this simulated life hurtling toward a pitch-black abyss, yet he was powerless to change its course. The simulation rolled on.

[After joining Root, Danzō trained you with all his resources, just as he promised. And you, with your prodigious talent, did not disappoint. By age twelve, you could defeat most of Root's operatives.]

[From the age of twelve, you began undertaking mission after mission for Danzō.]

[That same year, the Third Kazekage was assassinated, and Sunagakure declared war on Konoha.]

[You believed you were finally strong enough for revenge, but Danzō informed you that your target was Rasa, the leading candidate to become the Fourth Kazekage.]

[On your own, you stood no chance of killing Rasa and avenging your father.]

[Helpless, you could only bide your time, continuing to carry out Danzō's dangerous missions.]

[These life-or-death missions, however, honed you like a whetstone on steel. Your power broke through to new heights, and you completed every assignment with extreme proficiency.]

[You became the most powerful shinobi in Root, second only to Danzō himself.]

[Because of your existence, Root became more active on the battlefield, racking up achievements. As its leader, Danzō's own prestige grew considerably.]

[It was then that Danzō told you: "If I become Hokage, I can use that authority to grant you the opportunity for revenge."]

[His words made perfect sense to you. You resolved then and there to help Danzō become Hokage.]

[On another front, a shinobi named Namikaze Minato was also distinguishing himself, amassing great fame. The Third Hokage began considering Minato as his successor, The Fourth Hokage.]

[At that moment, Danzō gave you a new order: Assassinate Namikaze Minato.]

The command landed in Yuta's mind like a physical blow.

'Is he serious? Assassinate the Yellow Flash?

That senile old fool has truly lost his mind!'

In a world of conceptual gods, Namikaze Minato was the one who could literally be everywhere at once, a man who defied space and time itself.

A thousand profanities raced through Yuta's mind, but the simulated version of himself—the loyal, manipulated Shimura Jō—accepted the mission without a moment of hesitation.

[Having crossed paths with Minato before, you knew that if he became the Fourth Hokage, your chance for revenge would vanish forever.]

[And so, you chose to accept the mission. You would assassinate Namikaze Minato.]
