Chapter 1 - Prelude

"So, class this is goodbye. I have taught you everything I could for these past three years. Now I wish you a happy journey ahead. You may face hardships but never be demotivated by them, for hardship is a part of life and only through perseverance can you overcome these hardships."

Mr. Kenson, our homeroom teacher, blabbered endlessly at the podium.

Today was our final day of high school and thus Mr. Kenson felt the need to open his mouth and make a self-righteous speech before his students.

I looked around and saw many students with teary eyes, clearly emotional by the whole ordeal. But my heart failed to understand why they felt this way. They were such naïve bunch of fools.

In just a few days we had to head to the 'Union academy'. It was a special academy which trained students or should I say soldiers to fight against the enemies of humanity— the vampires.

Now everyone who graduated from high school had to attend this academy without fail. It did not matter if you belonged to a rich household or were dirt-poor, if you were awakened or unawakened, you had to attend it!

My name is Raizel Nova, and I am an unawakened junk. In a few days I had to attend the Union academy where the strongest of the strong and the weakest of the weak resided. It was a haven for the strong and a nightmare for the weak.

Me? I was sure to be at the bottom of the food chain. Soon my peaceful life would come to an end and a world of torment would welcome me.

It was frustrating just to think about, I couldn't believe how I would feel when I had to live through it.

'Sigh.'

Mr. Kenson had yet to finish his speech. I was so bored of his blabbering I could kill him for it. Well, if I was awakened that is.

'In a few days I would be getting beaten up while he is sitting at his home sipping coffee. What bullshit. Tch…'

I felt envious of Mr. Kenson, he had everything in this hell of a world. A decent awakened 'gift', a happy family and even a good job for God's sake. How can one man have all this in a hell hole called Earth?

"Lucky bastard," I muttered under my breath.

He was quite literally the opposite of me, how could I not be jealous? I was an unawakened orphan, there possibly couldn't be a worse combination.

Letting out another sigh, I looked out through the window, closing my ears completely. I had enough of Mr. Kenson for one day.

I saw the bright sun shining upon the moss-covered walls of the school, it was such a simple yet beautiful sight.

'If only I could awaken in these few days, how good would life be? I don't even need parents or something, just an awakening would be fine.' I smiled to myself, thinking about what I would do if I awakened.

'I would first kill that bastard Jason, piece of shit doesn't deserve to live.'

'Then I will kill that son of a bitch Marco. But he is kinda strong… hmm. I can still kill him strategically.'

Just as I was thinking about what I would do once I awakened, I heard the bell ring.

"Alright class, goodbye. Hope I see you all achieve something great in your lives." Mr. Kenson smiled warmly before exiting the class.

Soon, cries of some female students filled the class, tears rolled down their cheeks, overwhelmed with emotion.

'Tch, here I am contemplating my survival, and they have enough energy to waste on a freaking teacher leaving. It is not like he died or something.'

I got up from my seat, packed my things and avoiding all groups of students, I left.

Walking through the hallway, I couldn't help but pray silently to whatever gods there existed.

'Please let me awaken in these few days, please!'

In the current world, most people awakened at the age of 10, however this age was not absolute. Some geniuses awakened at the age of 7 while some late bloomers awakened at the age of 15. I was now close to the age of 18, although awakening now would be extremely rare, it was not impossible.

So, praying was my only hope. How else could I awaken?

'God please, help me this once. I don't want to die in that academy or worse to the vampires.'

I kept on praying till I reached home. It was a small 2-story building with cemented walls and a shabby white paint.

I entered my house, and the smell of wood assaulted my nostrils. The wood flooring of the house was done decades ago, thus the air in the house always whiffed of wood.

I headed straight to the kitchen and prepared myself a toast and some eggs. I was starving, I hadn't eaten anything since morning, and my stomach was heavily protesting for a meal.

'Everything hits differently when you are really hungry!' I thought to myself as I savored the taste of the toast and eggs in my mouth.
