Chapter 31 - Chapter 31 — The Road of Storms

The dawn was thin and colorless.

Lin Feng's boots sank into the wet soil as he walked east, the fog slowly thinning behind him like a ghost he'd finally outpaced. The marsh was gone — but its memory still pulsed faintly in his veins.

Each breath carried a chill that wasn't entirely his.

For three days he traveled through wilderness and storm.

Old roads cracked beneath his feet, vines wrapped around broken stone pillars, and ancient trees towered above, their roots splitting the earth like scars of forgotten battles. Every gust of wind carried faint spiritual pressure — remnants of cultivators who had long since fallen.

Xuanyu Ye's voice echoed from behind him.

"You're pushing too fast. The swamp's essence hasn't settled in you yet."

Lin Feng didn't slow. "If I stop, it wins. I can't carry another ghost in my head."

Xuanyu floated silently for a moment, then nodded. "Then make that fear useful. Convert it. Refine it."

Lin Feng's gaze hardened. "That's the plan."

By dusk of the third day, Lin Feng reached a clearing — a stretch of wildland known by wanderers as the Amber Plains.

Lightning clouds rolled low here, feeding on the natural qi that shimmered faintly in the air. The ground was cracked and charred, marked by the traces of old battles. Each bolt that struck left a glowing imprint for seconds before fading.

"This place…" Lin Feng murmured, looking around. "It feels alive."

Xuanyu nodded. "A battlefield from the Ancient Tribes era. The ground still remembers the flow of battle. You could cultivate here — if you can handle the interference."

"I'll take the risk."

He sat cross-legged on a rock, unsheathing his sword and laying it beside him. His spirit sea pulsed wildly, resonating with the storm above. He closed his eyes, sinking into the rhythm of the world.

*****

For hours, thunder roared across the plains.

Lin Feng breathed deeply, pulling strands of storm qi into his body — chaotic, violent, raw. It clashed with his own essence, causing small bursts of pain to spark under his skin. He gritted his teeth and forced his dantian to absorb it.

He remembered Xuanyu's words:

"Power isn't just how hard you strike — it's how long you can stand when Heaven strikes back."

That line lingered.

If his sword was destruction, his heart needed to become endurance.

He began shaping a defensive technique — slowly at first, imagining a wall of storm energy flowing around him. Not rigid. Fluid. Alive. He guided the lightning qi to circulate through his meridians in a spiral pattern, letting it form a barrier that pulsed with rhythm, not resistance.

Days passed.

Each attempt left him bleeding, burnt, or exhausted.

But he persisted.

When the storms came hardest, he stood.

When his qi clashed, he endured.

When the pain blurred his vision, he laughed through it.

Xuanyu watched, faint approval in his eyes. "You're building a technique from nothing. Most cultivators can't grasp that in decades."

Lin Feng smiled weakly, electricity dancing faintly over his skin.

"I've had a good teacher. Even if he's annoying."

"Flattery won't make me save you if your heart explodes," Xuanyu muttered — but his tone carried pride.

At last, after seven days and seven nights of cultivation, the lightning qi around Lin Feng began to rotate on its own — forming a perfect orbit around his body, each spark merging with the next.

A faint hum resonated across the plains.

The storm itself began to bend toward him.

"Defensive Technique: Heavenstorm Veil."

Lightning curved around Lin Feng like a living shield. Every bolt that struck was absorbed, dispersed, and reborn into his qi flow.

The air trembled. The ground cracked beneath his feet.

And then — the barrier shattered outward, releasing a blinding flash.

Xuanyu shielded his eyes, grinning. "Hah. You've done it."

When the light faded, Lin Feng stood surrounded by arcs of golden lightning.

His aura expanded — dense, heavy, steady as a mountain and sharp as a storm.

The qi in his dantian surged violently, filling every meridian before settling into calm clarity.

He exhaled slowly.

A faint smile crossed his face.

"I did it… Middle Stage."

Xuanyu nodded. "The barrier between realms is crossed. You've stabilized faster than I thought."

"I had help." Lin Feng looked up at the sky, where thunder still rolled distantly. "The world itself seems to be pushing me forward."

"That's because it wants to see what you'll become," Xuanyu said quietly. "Power that grows too fast always draws attention — from Heaven, men, or monsters."

Lin Feng sheathed his sword. "Then let them come."

He began walking again, the air humming softly around him from the residual qi of his cultivation.

The plains were quiet now — until a faint whistle cut through the wind.

Lin Feng turned just as a dagger embedded itself in the rock beside his head.

He caught the flicker of movement: a figure in tattered red, half-mask covering their face, eyes cold and sharp. The stranger's spiritual pressure was fierce — Foundation Realm peak, maybe higher.

"You picked the wrong direction to walk, friend," Lin Feng said calmly, hand on his sword.

The masked cultivator's voice was low, distorted. "You're the one who carries thunder qi. The one from the marsh."

Lin Feng's brow furrowed. "You were following me."

"No," the figure replied. "I was hunting what's inside you."

Before Lin Feng could answer, the man lunged — blade flashing with dark green poison qi. Lin Feng parried, the impact ringing like steel meeting storm. Lightning erupted in spirals, scattering dust.

The stranger retreated, eyes widening. "You've advanced…"

"Yeah," Lin Feng said, smirking faintly. "And you're my test."

******

Thunder exploded across the plains as their blades met again. Lin Feng moved faster, every strike flowing with refined precision — his Heavenstorm Veil flickering each time the enemy's blade came close. The defensive technique absorbed impact and turned it into counterforce, each exchange shaking the ground.

Xuanyu watched from afar, nodding. "Not bad. He's starting to flow with the storm."

The masked cultivator growled and unleashed a flurry of strikes, but Lin Feng slipped through them like lightning through clouds. His counterattack was swift — one clean arc of his sword.

A blinding flash split the air.

The attacker staggered, blood spilling onto the cracked soil.

Lin Feng lowered his blade. "Next time, don't follow echoes you don't understand."

The figure tried to speak, but their body disintegrated into mist — leaving behind a single blood-red talisman that drifted to Lin Feng's feet.

Xuanyu hovered closer. "A curse seal. Someone sent him."

Lin Feng studied the mark, eyes narrowing. "Then it's starting again."

*******

He turned east once more, the stormlight fading behind him. His body felt lighter — stronger — alive. For the first time, he could feel the sky pulling at him. If he focused, he might even be able to fly.

Slowly.

But it was a start.

Xuanyu drifted beside him. "You've grown stronger again. But strength draws eyes."

Lin Feng smirked, tucking the talisman away. "Then let them watch. I've got a lot more climbing left to do."

And with that, he stepped forward, lightning crackling faintly around him — a lone traveler walking into a horizon lit by storms.
