Chapter 10 - Good luck

William's gaze flickered briefly to the screen. It was a tabloid headline with his photo beside Kate Harrington, smiling at the hangout last night.

William Whitmore and Kate Harrington: Company celebration or date night?

Evans continued, "Apparently you two were photographed last night leaving the event together. Some of these sites are suggesting you spent the night with her."

He leaned forward, elbows on his knees. "What do you think your new wife will make of that?"

William set his pen down slowly. "Why would she care?"

Evans laughed. "You sure about that? Something about her eyes says she'd bite back if you pushed too far. She looks...."

William gave a small smirk. "Trust me, she wouldn't care about my personal life."

Evans tilted his head. "You married her, man. I'd say that gives her at least some reason to care. Did you do this on purpose? The press, the photos..what's going on with you? I thought you wanted...."

William stood up from his chair. Interrupting before Evans could finish his statement

" You thought wrong."

Evans studied him for a moment, then shook his head. "You know, one of these days, you're going to run out of things to hide behind. Work.. press. You'll eventually have to talk to her."

"I'm not hiding." William replied defensively.

Evans gave him a long, knowing look, then stood. "Sure. Whatever you say."

He started for the door, then stopped, looked at William and added "You really think Bri wouldn't care about the rumors? You might want to call her before she reads the news. Just saying."

"She wouldn't," William said flatly.

Evans sighed, shaking his head. "Maybe you're right. She wouldn't care. But your family will."

Before William could reply, his phone lit up on the desk.

Incoming Call: Grandma.

He hesitated for half a second, then answered and hit the speaker.

"William Alexander Whitmore," came his grandmother's sharp voice, every word edged with authority. "What is wrong with you boy? I want you at the estate. Now."

Evans grinned "Told you," he said with a laugh, heading for the door. "Looks like someone is in trouble."

William shot him a warning look.

Evans just chuckled, holding up his hands in mock surrender. "Good luck."
