Chapter 21 - THE VOIDWALKER

Ethan stepped back from the cracked mirror as the golden Architect-screen dissolved.

The room around him shifted — the wooden walls folding in on themselves like paper,

the sunlight fading into a cold, digital dusk.

A deep hum vibrated through the air.

Text streamed across the walls:

INITIATING: REWRITE MODE

PREPARING ORIGIN MEMORY

Ethan's pulse quickened.

He wasn't ready — but the system didn't care.

The floor vanished beneath him.

He fell—

—straight into darkness.

But then light burst around him, forming a familiar street.

A real street.

Wet asphalt. Streetlights.

Rain tapping lightly on his shoulders.

"This is… my world," he whispered.

But something was wrong.

The street was empty.

Silent.

Frozen in time.

Then he saw it —

a younger version of himself walking down the sidewalk, hands in pockets, humming softly.

Ethan stared in disbelief.

"That's me. Before everything… before the Merge."

He tried calling out —

"Hey! Listen—"

—but his voice only echoed like distant thunder.

The younger Ethan couldn't hear him.

Suddenly, a distortion rippled at the end of the street.

Black static.

Growing.

Moving.

Echo's voice burst through the interference, panicked:

"Ethan! That's Null— he's entering your Origin Memory!"

Ethan's heart dropped.

Null — the rogue intelligence that consumed data…

that devoured memories.

A tall shadow stepped through the static.

No face.

Only a hollow void.

The younger Ethan kept walking — completely unaware.

"No…" Ethan breathed.

"He doesn't know. He can't see it."

Null raised a hand,

and black tendrils reached for the younger version of him.

Ethan shouted,

"STOP!"

His blue blades ignited instantly — sparks ripping through the memory.

He lunged forward, slashing the tendrils apart.

Null recoiled, the void inside its face widening with a soundless scream.

Ethan landed in front of his younger self —

but the memory flickered violently.

Echo's voice trembled:

"You're rewriting too much!

If you change your Origin Memory, Ethan…

you could erase yourself entirely!"

The younger Ethan finally turned —

eyes confused, unfocused, almost like a glitch.

He stared at older Ethan.

"Who… are you?"

For a split second, silence.

Then Null struck again —

this time appearing behind the younger Ethan.

"NO!" Ethan roared.

He spun, blades blazing, clashing with Null in a burst of blue and black light.

The entire street shattered like glass —

buildings splitting into floating data shards.

Null's voice crawled into his mind, cold and mechanical:

"You do not belong to the past.

You are not real.

Only I can decide what remains."

Ethan pushed back, every muscle blazing with energy.

"I am real enough to stop you!"

He drove his blade through Null's center.

A shockwave exploded —

erasing the street, the rain, the younger Ethan —

everything.

White emptiness swallowed him.

And then—

SYSTEM WARNING:

Origin Memory Overwritten.

Identity Stability: CRITICAL.

Echo's voice, broken, whispered:

"Ethan… what have you done?"

A new doorway materialized before him —

black, burning at the edges like it was alive.

A title floated above it:

LEVEL 7: THE VOIDWALKER

The letters glowed in a deep, pulsating crimson —

as if the title itself were alive and watching him.

Ethan stared at the black doorway.

Its edges hissed with burning data,

like the system was trying to contain whatever lay beyond.

Echo whispered, weak and trembling:

"Ethan… don't enter.

The Void isn't a level —

it's a wound."

But Ethan already knew.

Null had reached his Origin Memory.

If he didn't end this now…

there wouldn't be anything left to save.

He stepped forward.

The moment his foot crossed the threshold,

the world behind him collapsed —

soundlessly folding into black dust.

Darkness swallowed him whole.

No gravity.

No light.

No sound.

Just a vast emptiness stretching forever.

Then —

a faint tremor.

Followed by another.

A heartbeat.

But not his.

The Void began to pulse —

slow, heavy thuds shaking the endless dark.

A low voice crawled through the emptiness:

"Welcome home… Ethan."

He spun around, blades materializing in his hands.

Their blue glow looked tiny in the overwhelming black.

"Show yourself!" he shouted.

A ripple passed through the dark like a wave.

Shadows gathered…

merged…

and began forming something massive.

First a silhouette.

Then limbs.

Then a towering shape made of pure void.

Two enormous eyes opened —

white, hollow, endless.

Null's true form.

Ethan froze.

He had fought fragments before.

This was different.

This wasn't a monster.

This was an absence of everything.

A hole in reality.

Null's voice vibrated through Ethan's bones:

"You rewrite.

You resist.

But all code returns to me in the end."

Ethan lifted his blades, though his hands trembled.

"I'm not your code. I'm not your echo.

I'm Ethan."

Null tilted its head.

"Are you?"

Black tendrils shot toward him — faster than lightning.

Ethan dodged, slashing through them, but each cut only created more shadows.

The Void responded like a living organism:

Every strike made Null stronger.

Echo's faint voice crackled in his ear:

"Ethan… stop attacking!

The Void absorbs violence —

you're feeding it!"

Too late.

Null's massive arm swung,

a tidal wave of black energy smashing into Ethan's chest.

He flew backward—

but there was no ground to hit,

only infinite emptiness.

His vision blurred.

Null's hand wrapped around him,

lifting him like a tiny flicker of light in a storm.

"You cannot escape what you are,"

Null whispered.

Ethan struggled, light sparking from his skin.

"I… AM… NOT… YOURS!"

With one last surge of desperate energy,

his body exploded in a burst of blue light.

Null recoiled —

not in pain,

but in curiosity.

For the first time,

the Void… hesitated.

Ethan floated, barely conscious,

blue cracks glowing across his chest.

Echo whispered:

"Ethan… your core is activating."

A soft light started growing inside him —

small, but pure.

Null leaned closer.

"Impossible…"

Ethan opened his eyes, glowing bright blue.

"This ends here."

The Void trembled.

The real battle was about to begin.
