"Here you go."
Right after I got inside his car, Patrick Sinclair handed me an envelope.
Without a word, I pulled the documents out.
I frowned. It was a will.
There were two wills in the envelope.
One was made by my grandfather, Jayden Kingsley, handing over the chairman position to Riven Kingsley if something were to happen to him and my father, Leonard Kingsley. Letting him decide how all the assets were to be distributed to his siblings and relatives.
It was a will that gave Riven all the power over the Kingsley Conglomerate.
The second will was made by Riven, handing me everything.
The whole conglomerate and all our assets.
I slowly turned to Patrick Sinclair, who silently sat beside me.
"I owe your grandfather a favor as he once saved my life," he started without looking at me.
"The favor was asked by your brother a month ago."
"What favor did he ask?"
I know the favor was not just handing over these documents to me. Riven wouldn't use such a precious favor to ask for a trivial matter.
He is also a businessman through and through. He would have asked for a deal that equals the favor given to Patrick Sinclair.
Patrick rubbed the ring on his finger with his thumb, "I will hold onto that will and everything that entails it."
He glanced at the document, prompting me to continue reading.
I almost scoffed upon seeing that my inheritance has a condition in it.
"Lilith Kingsley will inherit everything only if she were to get married in a month after receiving this will..."
There was also a line indicating that the original legal copy would be under Patrick Sinclair's protection until further conditions were met.
"If Lilith Kingsley were unable to get married within the indicated time, everything shall be donated to various charities all over the world."
My brow furrowed as I continued reading.
"If Lilith Kingsley gets married but dies, everything shall be donated to various charities all over the world..."
"Everything can only be inherited by Lilith Kingsley's child once they are of age. If Lilith Kingsley dies before this, everything shall be donated to various charities all over the world..."
Patrick Sinclair's position was clear. What he would protect is the Kingsley Conglomerate. By keeping the legal document safe, Kingsley Conglomerate won't fall into anyone else's hands.
It was very obvious that the deaths of my family were planned by people coveting the century-old legacy.
"Can I have a copy of this?" I asked Patrick.
"You can."
He then nodded at his assistant, and the assistant handed me another envelope.
Looking inside, it was already a prepared copy of the documents.
As I put back the original copies of the wills, I noticed that there was something else inside the envelope.
It was a memory card.
"I suppose this is something I can take?" I asked Patrick once again.
"I'm only keeping the original copies of the two wills, nothing more."
I nodded, keeping the memory card and the copies of the wills.
"I won't take up any more of your time. Goodbye, Sir."
I got out of the car without another word.
...
After getting back to our two-story villa, a place I hadn't set foot in for two years. I went straight to the study.
Without looking at anything else, I sat behind the table and took out my laptop and the memory card Riven left behind.
There were only documents inside, but what caught my eye first was the document entitled 'Lilith'.
'You already know that our deaths were all orchestrated behind the scenes without anyone telling you that it was.'
The soft hum of the computer was the only sound in the room.
I stared at the first words, even though I was already sure. Seeing a confirmation still hits differently.
'I have also looked into everything. All documents in this memory card were related to our deaths, mine included. I just did not expect that Christopher and Amelia would be targeted so soon while I was looking into our parents and grandfather's deaths. I could not protect them.'
I touched the screen, my fingers hovering over the words, 'I could not protect them.'
'Christopher and Amelia also knew that there was foul play about the deaths of father and grandfather. Together with what happened on the operating table with mother, leading to her death.'
A bitter laugh almost escaped my lips.
They knew.
They all knew, and they said nothing.
For the first time since I found out what happened to my family, I started feeling an emotion.
Anger.
'All three of us decided to keep it from you. Because we all know what you will do, but we can't let you go on a rampage yet. We still have no idea who the people behind everything are. A few of them, yes, but not everyone.'
I leaned back and closed my eyes.
Indeed, I would have run amok if they had informed me. I have my ways of doing things, but it was filled with risks.
After taking deep breaths, I opened my eyes and continued reading.
'I left Patrick Sinclair the will. I could not ask him to protect you, but by protecting the will, those people won't be able to touch you.'
I know.
I instantly understood why the conditions were written as such.
Protecting a person meant leaving guards or being watched 24 hours a day. But that does not guarantee that I will be safe.
But if the will was being protected, and by none other than the leading figure of another powerful family. It gives me a higher chance of survival from their claws.
'As for everything else, I will leave it to your judgment. Because we did ask what you wanted when we decided to keep quiet about everything that was going on. That is why I won't tell you what you need to do. You can decide for yourself.'
My lips parted slightly when I reached the last words of his letter.
'I'm sorry, Lily. For leaving you alone in such a way. We love you, just remember that.'
I closed the document and once again took a deep breath.
I will remember, but I will also make them remember that I am the most difficult child in our family.
