Freya took one step toward Amelia's bed, her fingers twitched. The last trace of the crystal blade she'd dismissed still tingled against her palm.
She inhaled slowly and moved closer. The door burst open.
"Mom!"
Freya spun around.
A young woman stood frozen in the doorway, chest rising and falling like she had sprinted the entire way here.
Freya narrowed her eyes. "She is your mother?"
The girl nodded. "Yesā¦ she is."
Their gazes locked.
The girl's expression shifted, confusion, then a flicker of fear.
"Your eyesā¦" she whispered. "Your handsā¦ Have we met before?"
Freya stiffened.
"No" she said too fast. "We haven't."
Before the girl could speak again, Freya brushed past her and slipped out of the ward.
She didn't stop until she reached her office, closing the door with an unsteady hand.
She pressed her palm to her forehead.
