Chapter 28 - Chapter 28: Historical Reversion

Chapter 28: Historical Reversion

Stone, trees, soil… even the sky, the ground, and his own body—everything before Mizuma's eyes fractured like a kaleidoscope.

His hands became bouquets of countless fingers, and the entire world expanded infinitely outward.

He'd felt something similar once before—

when he had used Division to summon a clone of himself from the past.

Back then, he could only see through a single perspective: one "self" crawling forward along the timeline like a worm.

But now… now the scope of his vision was infinitely greater.

It was as if he could see the history of everything.

The wristwatch that had absorbed a portion of the glowing motes began to float.

It disassembled itself—then reformed—becoming the medium through which his new Fullbring would manifest.

As the last spark of light merged into him, Mizuma's head throbbed sharply.

It felt as though a new limb had grown out of his mind—strange, awkward, but instinctively controllable.

He murmured his first impression of this newfound power.

"...So strong."

Just like Ryugetsu,

his Fullbring was also tied to time.

If he were to name it, he would call it—

Historical Reversion (Rekishi Suyū).

And to understand what it could do… he decided to test it.

Mizuma reached into his uniform, pulled out a single paper bill, took a steady breath, and activated Historical Reversion.

In the next moment, to the outside world, he vanished into a streak of white light that dove straight into the bill.

But to Mizuma himself—it was as though he'd entered… a movie theater.

He sat in the audience, watching a film play out on the silver screen before him.

The film showed the life of the bill—how it was printed at the mint, passed from hand to hand, deposited in various banks, and finally paid out as Watanabe Mizuma's salary.

After ten seconds, the film ended. Mizuma left the theater and returned to the cavern.

That was the power of Historical Reversion.

When used on non-living, man-made objects, Mizuma could enter a "film room" that played the object's history.

Of course, it didn't show him everything second by second.

The dull moments fast-forwarded automatically, with the playback speed determined by the emotions of the object's owner—the stronger the emotional fluctuations, the slower the playback.

For example, if someone wore a jacket while suffering a painful heartbreak, Mizuma would witness that event in real time.

Through Historical Reversion, he became a spectator ghost within the past—

able to observe until he chose to exit, or until his reiatsu was exhausted.

It was a power faintly reminiscent of The Almighty or the Book of the End.

Mizuma could sense that, if he grew stronger, one day he might stand up from that theater seat—

and step directly into the film itself.

When that day came, he could pull a Yhwach and say,

"Your blade was already broken—in the past."

The thought alone made him smirk.

Still, the ability had its limits.

Historical Reversion required a five-to-six second charge time, making it unsuitable for direct combat or dodging attacks.

In that respect, Ryugetsu's "Erasure" technique was far more practical.

But now wasn't the time for speculation.

He had to use this power immediately.

He couldn't just burst into the trial chamber, slap the Binding Chain onto Little Red Riding Hood, and steal the Soul King's Sword before fleeing.

Sure, that would work—but afterward, Urahara would undoubtedly investigate.

And that man was basically the Shinigami version of Doraemon.

If anyone could trace a trail back to him, it was Urahara Kisuke.

So Mizuma needed a convincing deception.

And what's the easiest way to create a believable lie?

Simple—crush your opponent with superior information.

Historical Reversion was the perfect tool for that.

Getting the Binding Chain had been the right move.

Now, with this ability, the chain itself could serve as a chronicle—a history book in his hands.

If Tokinada was right, it had been designed to restrain Little Red Riding Hood.

If so, perhaps it held records of the creature's creation—or its link to the Soul King's Sword.

The more information he had, the stronger his hand would be.

Mizuma grasped the thick chain slung over his shoulder, raised his watch—the new Fullbring medium—and aimed it at the links.

"Give me what I need."

Meanwhile, inside the Trial of the Divine Sword—

As a captain, Muguruma Kensei had seen his share of insanity:

ambushed by hordes of Gillian-class Hollows, hunting a serial killer in Seireitei, clashing against Quincy clans…

but this was on another level entirely.

He swore he had no idea what the hell Urahara had done.

That normally goofy man had simply stepped up to the crystal, raised his blade once—

and suddenly, the creature called "Little Red Riding Hood" reacted as if gravely wounded.

Its reiatsu plummeted off a cliff, collapsing to something roughly equal to Kensei's own.

Science, apparently, was terrifying.

Shoving down his confusion, Kensei charged in.

He landed two heavy punches squarely on the dragon's head while its movements slowed to a crawl.

"…What the—"

Before, it had been like punching solid steel—one wrong hit could break his knuckles.

Now, it felt more like hitting a block of compressed biscuits.

Cracked scales scattered from his blows as Little Red Riding Hood flapped its wings, rising into the air.

It circled once, glaring down at Urahara with burning, hateful eyes.

"You… dare—"

But Urahara didn't even respond.

He remained kneeling, blade embedded in the ground,

reiatsu surging as flashes of light erupted from where Benihime met the stone.

It looked like he was wrestling against some immense opposing force.

"Captain Kensei! Now—while you can! I can't restrain it for long!"

Guess that explained it—Urahara was barely holding the thing down.

Kensei nodded once, wordlessly.

He and Lisa charged forward side by side.

This time, the weakened Little Red Riding Hood no longer dared to meet them head-on.

After a flurry of exchanges, the two seized the moment—switching to a near-suicidal assault style—forcing the dragon back, driving it further away from the crystal.

They couldn't let it approach Urahara again.

Not while he was still holding the line.
