The Uchiha main house had rarely felt this alive.
Warm golden light filled the great hall, spilling from the lamps along the walls and reflecting off polished wooden floors. Long tables had been arranged around the room, covered with food, sweets, fruit, and enough drinks to keep the adults occupied for hours. The smell of freshly prepared dishes mixed with the faint sweetness of candles, while children's laughter rose and fell above the conversations of the adults.
For tonight, at least, nobody was talking about politics.
Or, more accurately, nobody was talking about it openly.
The village outside was still the same village it had been that morning. The same suspicions remained. The same rumours continued to circulate. The same people who had spent years looking at the Uchiha with suspicion were still watching them.
But none of that seemed to matter to the children running around the hall.
It was Naruto Uzumaki's seventh birthday.
And Naruto was enjoying every second of it.
He stood near the centre of the room with a plate in one hand, arguing cheerfully with Shikamaru about which dessert was better. Hinata stood beside them, smiling quietly while listening to their argument. A little farther away, Kiba was running around with the energy of someone who had discovered that a large Uchiha house contained far too many places to hide.
Hana Inuzuka was trying to keep an eye on him.
Hana Hyūga, meanwhile, was among the guests with her family, occasionally glancing toward Naruto with a small smile.
Mikoto moved from one group of guests to another, making certain that everyone had something to eat and drink. Her expression was relaxed, but she occasionally checked Naruto from across the room, the way a mother inevitably did when her child's birthday was involved.
Near the entrance, Tekka and Inabi were performing two duties at once. They greeted arriving guests with smiles while quietly keeping track of everyone who entered the compound.
Yashiro was doing much the same thing, except he made it look effortless. He moved through the crowd, exchanging greetings, laughing at jokes and making polite conversation with clan representatives as though this were nothing more than an ordinary celebration.
That was precisely why it worked.
Everyone looked relaxed.
Everyone behaved normally.
And yet the more experienced shinobi in the room understood that an Uchiha celebration was never entirely without security.
At the edge of the hall sat Fugaku Uchiha.
He had barely touched his drink.
His attention moved slowly across the room.
Tekka.
Inabi.
Yashiro.
The visiting clan heads.
The Hyūga.
The Nara.
The Yamanaka.
The Akimichi.
The children.
Finally, Naruto.
Fugaku's gaze remained on him for several seconds.
Naruto was laughing at something Shikamaru had said. Hinata was trying not to laugh too loudly. Kiba had apparently found another hiding place, because Hana was now looking around for him.
For a moment, Fugaku simply watched.
Then his expression changed almost imperceptibly.
The happiness in the room reminded him of the morning.
Ten October.
Hokage Tower.
---
The summons had arrived early.
Fugaku had known from the moment he read it that this would not be a pleasant meeting.
When he entered Hiruzen's office that morning, the atmosphere confirmed it.
Hiruzen sat behind his desk, his hands resting together in front of him. The Third Hokage looked tired. Not merely physically tired, but like a man who had spent too many years trying to hold together something that was beginning to crack.
Danzo stood beside him.
Fugaku stopped several steps from the desk.
Hiruzen looked at him for a moment before speaking.
"Fugaku."
There was no greeting.
"Where is Shisui?"
Fugaku's expression remained neutral.
For a moment he said nothing.
Then he answered calmly.
"That is a question I should be asking you, Hokage-sama."
Hiruzen's eyes narrowed slightly.
Fugaku continued.
"Shisui came to you on the evening of the seventh to give his report. Since then, we have received no word from him."
His voice remained controlled, but every word carried weight.
"He came to your office. He disappeared after that. So tell me, Hokage-sama—what happened to him?"
The room became very still.
Hiruzen looked uncomfortable.
Danzo did not.
His fingers tightened around his cane.
"You know exactly what happened."
Fugaku turned his eyes toward him.
"Do I?"
Danzo's single visible eye hardened.
"Shisui was loyal to the village. He understood what the Uchiha were planning. You couldn't allow him to interfere."
Fugaku stared at him.
Danzo continued before anyone could interrupt.
"You killed him."
Hiruzen's expression darkened.
"Danzo."
But Danzo ignored the warning.
"You have your Mangekyō now. Your clan has been gathering strength for years. You are only pretending to seek peace because you need more time."
Fugaku's jaw tightened.
There it was.
The accusation they had heard in one form or another for years.
No evidence.
No investigation.
No proof.
Just suspicion.
Always suspicion.
Fugaku looked toward Hiruzen.
"So that is what we are now?"
Hiruzen frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"Whenever something happens, the Uchiha are responsible."
Fugaku's voice remained quiet, which somehow made it more dangerous.
"Shisui disappears after reporting to the Hokage, and the first conclusion is that the Uchiha killed him."
He looked toward Danzo.
"If we question it, we are plotting."
His eyes returned to Hiruzen.
"If we defend ourselves, we are preparing a coup."
Fugaku paused.
"And if one of our own disappears, apparently we are guilty before anyone bothers to search for him."
Danzo struck his cane against the floor.
"You expect us to believe—"
Fugaku's patience finally snapped.
His shoulders stiffened.
His voice rose.
"If you keep poking us like some child's toy..."
He looked directly at Danzo.
"Then we're done."
Hiruzen's expression changed.
"Fugaku—"
"I am resigning from every political and non-political post."
The words landed harder than a shouted threat.
Fugaku continued before Hiruzen could respond.
"And I am not doing this alone."
His eyes hardened.
"We are all resigning."
Silence.
Fugaku turned and walked toward the door.
Hiruzen watched him go.
The door closed.
Danzo immediately spoke.
"I warned you, Hiruzen. They are revealing themselves. They have been preparing for this. We should—"
"Shut up, you idiot!"
The shout echoed through the office.
Danzo stopped.
Hiruzen's face had lost its usual calm.
"You don't understand what he just said."
Danzo frowned.
"They are withdrawing from the village's political structure."
"They are preparing a coup."
"No."
Hiruzen looked toward the closed door.
"If they were preparing a coup, they would be gathering power."
His voice became quieter.
"They are doing the opposite."
Danzo stared at him.
A shinobi suddenly rushed into the room.
He bowed.
"Hokage-sama."
Hiruzen turned.
"What is it?"
The shinobi swallowed.
"Fugaku Uchiha has submitted his resignation in writing."
Danzo's expression hardened.
Then the shinobi continued.
"And... one by one, every Uchiha is doing the same."
Hiruzen closed his eyes.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
A coup could be fought.
An army could be fought.
A rebellion could be crushed.
But what happened when one of the founding clans simply withdrew its political participation?
That was something else.
It was not an attack.
It was a declaration.
And the village had no easy way to fight it.
---
Fugaku opened his eyes.
He was back in the birthday party.
The noise of the hall returned around him.
Someone laughed loudly near the food table.
A child ran past him.
Naruto was still smiling.
Fugaku's lips curved slightly.
The morning had been only the beginning.
The real move would happen tonight.
But he would wait.
The timing mattered.
---
Across the room, Itachi watched his younger brother.
Sasuke had refused to leave his side for most of the evening.
Itachi had stopped trying to convince him otherwise.
His little brother seemed fascinated by everything happening around him. He watched Naruto more than anyone else, particularly whenever Naruto laughed.
Itachi gently placed a hand on Sasuke's head.
His thoughts drifted toward the obvious comparison.
Naruto and Sasuke were almost the same age.
Actually, Naruto was younger.
Yet the difference between their lives could hardly have been greater.
Sasuke's greatest concern tonight was whether he would get another piece of cake.
Naruto had spent the previous days dealing with matters that would have frightened experienced shinobi.
Itachi looked at him carefully.
Naruto was laughing.
That was the strange part.
He could still laugh like a child.
He could still become excited over food.
He could still argue about desserts.
He could still enjoy a birthday.
But Itachi knew better now.
Naruto's childhood had not disappeared from his personality.
It had disappeared from his decisions.
The boy could play.
He could joke.
He could act childish.
But whenever something truly mattered, the child vanished.
What remained was someone who knew exactly what he wanted.
Itachi's thoughts returned to the previous night.
Naka Shrine.
---
The underground chamber had been packed.
Clan members stood shoulder to shoulder beneath the old stone walls of the shrine.
Fugaku had stood before them and told them the truth.
The Uchiha were in danger.
Not merely politically isolated.
Not merely distrusted.
Their entire clan had been pushed toward a position where one mistake could become an excuse for something irreversible.
Then Shisui had appeared.
Itachi still remembered the sight.
He had supported Shisui as they entered.
Shisui looked exhausted.
One eye was covered.
His body had not fully recovered.
For a moment, the room had been silent.
Then Shisui had bowed his head.
"I am sorry."
His voice had cracked.
He told them everything.
The information he had given the village.
Why he had done it.
How he had convinced himself that proving his loyalty would protect both the village and his clan.
And how that loyalty had nearly cost him everything.
The Uchiha had been furious.
But not with Shisui.
They were furious at the circumstances that had driven him into that position.
Itachi remembered the anger in the room.
Then came the discussion.
The possibility of fighting.
The possibility of refusing to tolerate another accusation.
The possibility of finally answering force with force.
And then Naruto spoke.
At first, he had been ignored.
Then someone called him a child.
Then another did.
Eventually Naruto's patience disappeared.
Itachi remembered his exact expression.
He had not looked frightened.
He had looked annoyed.
"Child?"
Naruto had looked around the shrine.
"That's all you people can see?"
Several Uchiha had frowned.
Naruto had stepped forward.
"Fine."
His voice became colder.
"If being seven is such a problem, then stop talking."
He looked across the gathered clan.
"Fight me."
Itachi remembered the silence that followed.
Even now, thinking about it made him almost smile.
The Uchiha had been insulted.
A seven-year-old outsider had walked into their shrine and challenged them.
And then Yashiro had stepped forward.
"There is no need for that."
Naruto had looked at him.
Yashiro continued.
"You need Uchiha allies."
Naruto's expression became amused.
"Oh, great."
He tilted his head.
"The stupid one finally figured it out."
Several Uchiha immediately stiffened.
Yashiro's eye twitched.
But he controlled himself.
"One fight."
He pointed toward Naruto.
"If you win, you're the boss."
Then he pointed toward himself.
"If we win, we're the boss."
A weak laugh came from Shisui.
"Great idea."
Everyone looked toward him.
Shisui smiled despite his condition.
"But one warning."
He glanced toward Itachi.
"Itachi and I shouldn't participate."
Yashiro frowned.
"Why?"
Shisui's smile widened.
"Because neither of us can defeat that boy."
The chamber went silent.
Itachi had not disagreed.
Yashiro, Tekka and Inabi stepped forward.
Someone in the crowd muttered that the three of them together could defeat a Kage.
Another Uchiha told them they were insane.
Shisui merely leaned against Itachi.
"Don't underestimate him."
His smile disappeared.
"Or you'll end up like the Hokage."
Then the fight began.
---
The first exchange had been almost disappointing.
At least for the Uchiha.
Tekka attacked first.
Inabi came from the opposite side.
Yashiro stayed back, watching.
Shuriken filled the air.
Naruto moved.
Not quickly.
Barely at all.
A slight turn of his shoulder.
A small movement of his head.
A step.
The weapons passed him.
Tekka's eyes narrowed.
Inabi accelerated.
Their coordination was excellent.
Three experienced Uchiha moving as one.
Fire spread across the shrine floor.
Lightning followed.
The combination should have forced Naruto into movement.
It didn't.
The attacks simply stopped.
Not against Naruto's body.
They stopped before reaching him.
A thin space remained between the attacks and his clothes.
The Uchiha stared.
Yashiro's Sharingan tracked the phenomenon.
There was no visible wall.
No obvious barrier.
Nothing that could be seen with ordinary eyes.
Yet the result was unmistakable.
Naruto stood untouched.
Tekka attacked again.
Nothing.
Inabi followed.
Nothing.
Yashiro joined them.
Still nothing.
Then Naruto sighed.
"Are you finished?"
Three Sharingan widened.
Naruto raised one hand.
"Because now it's my turn."
He disappeared.
Tekka felt something strike his chest.
Before he could react, he was already falling.
Inabi turned.
Naruto was behind him.
One movement.
Down.
Yashiro managed to react faster than the other two.
He saw Naruto.
He saw the movement.
He tried to counter.
And then the world spun.
He hit the ground.
Silence filled the shrine.
Three elite Uchiha were lying on the floor.
Naruto stood in the centre.
Not breathing heavily.
Not celebrating.
Not even particularly impressed.
An elderly Uchiha finally broke the silence.
"If you're this strong, why do you bother attending the Academy?"
Naruto looked at him.
"Because punching people isn't the only way to solve problems."
He looked around the shrine.
"You people keep thinking the battlefield is where wars are fought."
His expression became serious.
"Sometimes the battlefield is a room."
Nobody laughed.
Naruto continued.
"And sometimes the strongest weapon in that room is knowing what everyone else doesn't."
That was when Itachi understood.
Naruto had not challenged them merely to prove that he was strong.
He had challenged them because he was tired of being dismissed.
And because he knew that once they stopped seeing him as a child, they would finally listen.
The fight had given him that.
---
Itachi's eyes returned to the present.
Sasuke tugged at his sleeve.
"Brother."
Itachi looked down.
"What?"
"Is the cake coming?"
Itachi almost laughed.
"Probably."
Across the room, Naruto was already asking the same question.
---
Near the entrance, Tekka and Inabi were enjoying themselves.
They had spent most of the evening greeting guests, checking security and pretending they were not constantly monitoring the room.
Tekka glanced toward Naruto.
Then toward Inabi.
Inabi followed his gaze.
Both men smiled.
"Does he really need us for security?" Tekka murmured.
Inabi chuckled.
"After last night?"
Tekka shook his head.
"Honestly, I think we are protecting everyone else from him."
They laughed quietly.
The memory came back naturally.
Naruto standing before them.
The challenge.
Their confidence.
And then the humiliating speed with which they had ended up on the floor.
Tekka rubbed his shoulder at the memory.
"I still don't understand how he does that."
Inabi glanced toward him.
"You don't need to understand it."
He smiled.
"We just need to make sure nobody attacks him."
Tekka looked at Naruto again.
"Who would be stupid enough?"
Both men laughed.
The party continued around them.
Neither noticed how closely several visiting shinobi were observing the room.
Yashiro did.
He was already moving through the guests.
He smiled.
He shook hands.
He exchanged greetings.
He made jokes.
But his eyes never stopped working.
He remembered the previous night differently from Tekka and Inabi.
For them, Naruto's power had been the shocking part.
For Yashiro, it had been the conversation afterward.
Naruto had explained his reasoning with an unsettling clarity.
He had not wanted the Uchiha to charge blindly into a confrontation.
He had wanted them to survive.
He had wanted them to stop standing in the exact position their enemies expected them to occupy.
The police force.
Political isolation.
Constant surveillance.
Predictable reactions.
Naruto had looked at all of it and called it a trap.
Yashiro had initially hated hearing it.
Then Naruto had explained what would happen if the Uchiha followed the obvious path.
Fight.
The village labels them traitors.
The council demands action.
The clan fights back.
And suddenly every accusation becomes "proof."
Naruto's alternative was far more dangerous.
Withdraw.
Force everyone else to reveal where they stood.
Let the village feel the consequences of pushing the Uchiha away.
And most importantly—
Do it publicly.
Without throwing the first punch.
Yashiro smiled as he remembered.
That boy was terrifying.
Not because he was strong.
Strength could be measured.
Intelligence like that was much harder to defend against.
Yashiro looked toward Naruto again.
The boy was currently arguing with Kiba over something completely meaningless.
Yashiro shook his head.
How could the same person be both?
---
Naruto, meanwhile, was having the time of his life.
He had completely forgotten the political implications for the moment.
Or perhaps he simply didn't care.
That distinction was important.
He knew exactly what tonight meant.
He knew the risks.
He knew the future.
He knew that there were threats approaching that even the greatest shinobi of the current generation barely understood.
He knew what happened if he simply allowed canon to unfold.
That was why he acted.
But acting did not mean he had to spend every waking moment looking serious.
He was seven.
If there was cake, he wanted cake.
If there was good food, he wanted good food.
If his friends were laughing, he wanted to laugh with them.
Knowing the future had taken his childhood away from his decisions.
It did not have to take away every moment of happiness.
Naruto looked around the hall.
For tonight, everyone he cared about was here.
That mattered.
"Naruto!"
He turned.
Mikoto stood beside a large table.
"Come here."
Naruto immediately walked over.
"What?"
Mikoto smiled.
"You've been asking about the cake for the last half hour."
"Because nobody showed it to me!"
"That's because you were supposed to wait."
Naruto narrowed his eyes suspiciously.
"Is this another Uchiha test?"
Mikoto laughed.
"No."
She reached toward the table.
A large white cloth covered something beneath it.
Naruto stared.
His curiosity immediately overcame everything else.
"What is that?"
Shikamaru walked over, hands in his pockets.
"The cake, obviously."
Naruto looked offended.
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
"Because you didn't ask."
"I just asked!"
"You asked after I already answered."
Hinata covered her mouth, trying not to laugh.
Kiba appeared from somewhere behind Hana Inuzuka.
"Is it finally time?"
Hana Inuzuka grabbed him by the collar.
"Stay there."
"But—"
"No."
Across the hall, Sasuke had already joined the other children.
Even the adults began turning toward the table.
The conversations gradually faded.
Fugaku stood.
Itachi looked toward his father.
Yashiro stopped beside the wall.
Tekka and Inabi exchanged a glance.
Hiruzen smiled from his place among the guests.
For one brief moment, every political calculation disappeared.
There was only a birthday.
Mikoto took hold of the cloth.
"Ready?"
Naruto's eyes lit up.
"Yes!"
She pulled.
The cloth came away.
A beautifully decorated birthday cake appeared beneath the warm golden lights.
Seven candles stood ready on top.
The children erupted into cheers.
Naruto's face brightened.
For a few seconds, nobody was thinking about the Hokage.
Nobody was thinking about Danzo.
Nobody was thinking about the Uchiha's resignation.
Nobody was thinking about alliances, rumours or war.
Naruto simply stared at his birthday cake.
And smiled.
To be continued...
