Lucas had wanted to talk to his son as soon as Deacon had arrived.
But his wife had blocked him.
"Lucas, our son has just had quite a shock. I know you. You will not be able to be emotionally available for him, and that is what he needs. So give me some time with him," At first, Lucas had not agreed with that at all, and he had wanted to argue with his wife. But in the end he had agreed with her.
It was best to strike while the iron was still hot, and in Deacon's case, the iron was extremely hot. No doubt about it, his son still believed that he was heartbroken over losing the Slater girl.
But Lucas had to admit, yielding to his wife, (not that he'd had a choice ) was turning out to be for the best, standing by the window of his study.
Lucas was staring at the slowly approaching figures of his wife and eldest son, and he was realizing something. Though that might not have been her intent, his wife had saved him.
