Normally, Haley was a very tolerant person, she could endure a lot without exploding. A clear example of that was her not snapping at Roth despite him getting on her nerves by doing all of the annoying things that he had been doing.
But if there was one thing that she would not tolerate, it was disrespect. No one had any right to talk about her any type of way, especially Deacon Roth. She had put up with far too much for him to just lose it simply because he had been inattentive. Hearing the coldness in her voice, Roth reared back, and for a moment, Haley almost convinced herself that he was backing down.
But her estimation of his intelligence went down when instead of asking for forgiveness. The man, his voice a cold, sharp tone that almost sounded like hissing, chose to go on.
