He wore that infuriating smirk again. "What?"
"You pretend to understand everything about me when you only know what some investigator dug up." I drew a careful breath, holding his stare. "Background checks don't reveal feelings, thoughts, or future actions. Without knowing those things, you'll never truly understand who I am."
"Why would I care to know more than necessary?" That familiar cold amusement danced in his dark eyes.
"I see what you're doing." I threw his own logic back at him. "You only needed to confirm that your so-called brother claimed me before you purchased me at the highest price ever paid for a slave."
The amusement vanished instantly. Before I could blink, Zayden moved with inhuman speed, positioning himself above me. My breath caught as he braced one hand against the headboard, leaning close enough that I could feel the chill radiating from his skin.
