The harsh reality of St. Chaim Reform Academy didn't break me, nor did the Noah family's constant accusations and drama. But the idea of Levi uncovering the nightmare of my recent years? That terrified me to my core.
Johan saw right through me, his expression softening with pity. I could see the sympathy in his eyes as he looked at me, like he was thinking about everything I'd been through. Those years had stripped away my childhood faster than anyone should endure.
His hand landed gently on my shoulder, voice thick with compassion. "You don't have to say anything if you're not ready. It's alright."
I heard him sigh quietly, and I could tell he wanted to leave those painful memories in the past. From here on out, they'd protect me.
"Relax," Johan murmured reassuringly. "Levi doesn't suspect anything."
Just looking at my bruises made his chest tighten with anguish.
