Jill's warm smile cracked like ice hitting pavement.
'Since when did Webster grow a brain?' The thought hit her like a slap. Her brother had never questioned her before—not once.
Her mouth twitched. Webster stared at her with laser focus, and she scrambled to hide the panic clawing at her chest. Her eyes darted away, giving her away completely.
"I got bored. Wanted to walk around by myself." The excuse sounded pathetic even to her own ears. A toddler could see through that lie.
Webster's face darkened. Betrayal burned in his gut as his grip tightened on her arm without thinking. "You've never lied to me, Jill. Not once. So tell me the truth—why the hell did you go there?"
This time, Jill's shock was real. Webster had never come at her like this. Never raised his voice, never looked at her with such raw suspicion. The golden boy who'd worshipped her since day one was suddenly treating her like a stranger.
