Sallie's POV
Lionel's confusion was written all over his face when I asked that question, but something in my eyes must have triggered his alarm bells.
It was the same look I'd given him when I first told him Andy was dead.
I watched Lionel instinctively step back, his gaze fixed on the scissors in my hand. The resistance rolling off him was almost tangible.
My reaction to his obvious fear made me laugh. The sound came out twisted, like something clawing its way out of hell.
"Everyone at St. Chaim Reform Academy sleeps with a weapon close by, just in case. Andy did too," I said, letting the words hang in the air. "Want to guess why we do that?"
Lionel swayed, looking like he might collapse.
His mind was clearly racing, but all he managed was a weak, "I don't know."
I stared at him, keeping my expression completely blank.
Of course he doesn't know. Just like the Noah Family had no clue what they put me through when they shipped me off to St. Chaim Reform Academy.
