I'd lost count of how long my legs had been carrying me. They moved without thought, driven by a single, desperate command—keep running.
When we finally broke free from the tangled wilderness and stumbled into the outskirts of town, the sight of streetlights and scattered people hit me like salvation. My knees gave out completely, and I crashed to the pavement, every muscle screaming.
Todd wasn't ready for my sudden collapse. He tumbled down beside me, a sharp intake of breath escaping his lips.
That's when it hit me—I wasn't alone in this mess.
I spun toward him, panic creeping into my voice. "Are you hurt?"
He was gasping, his face contorted with pain. "I'll live, but another mile might've finished me off."
Despite his attempt at humor, I caught the strain beneath his words. My own body felt like it was falling apart, and I had no clue where we'd ended up or what threats might still be hunting us.
