Chapter 4 - The Past

The Romano estate was quiet in the late afternoon, the kind of silence that spoke louder than words. Alessia sat in her father's private study, the heavy scent of leather and aged wood surrounding her. Stacks of files and folders were spread across the desk, each one a thread in the tapestry of her family's power.

Her fingers traced the edges of an old ledger. It was yellowed, delicate, and full of names she didn't immediately recognize. But each page told a story—loans given in whispers, favors exchanged in shadows, promises of loyalty that had been broken more than once.

A knock at the door broke her concentration.

"Enter," she called, voice steady.

Her father stepped in, his expression unreadable. "Going through old business records?"

Alessia didn't look up. "I need to understand everything. Soon, this will all be my responsibility."

Don Romano's eyes darkened slightly. "Some things," he said carefully, "are better left buried."

Alessia's gaze sharpened. "And yet they've shaped our family. I need to know, Father. Every debt, every secret, every enemy."

Her father sighed and sat across from her, steepling his fingers. "Very well. There are old debts—some monetary, some… less tangible. Families we wronged, alliances that fell apart. And the De Lucas…" His voice faltered slightly. "Your generation has inherited more than wealth. You've inherited their grudges too."

Alessia's pulse quickened. She had known the feud ran deep, but hearing her father speak the words aloud made it real. "How bad?" she asked softly.

"Bad enough that one wrong move could destroy everything," he said. "And worse, there are secrets in this house you don't yet understand. Files, letters… some of them tied to your mother's death."

Alessia froze for a moment. Her mother had died when she was young, leaving a gap in her heart and unanswered questions. Could it be connected?

"I'll uncover it all," she said, determination hardening her tone. "I need the full picture, Father. No exceptions."

Don Romano's gaze softened slightly, pride mixed with fear. "Be careful, Alessia. Knowledge is power—but it can also be poison."

Alessia nodded, already turning her attention back to the files. Among the stacks, she discovered old ledgers showing payments to unknown figures, letters hinting at threats and blackmail, and notes written in her mother's delicate hand warning her father of dangers only he seemed to understand.

One letter, in particular, caught her eye. The edges were frayed, ink slightly faded:

"Never trust what you cannot see, never forgive what is done in darkness. Some debts cannot be repaid, only survived."

Alessia's hand clenched around the paper. She didn't fully understand the meaning yet, but one thing was clear: her family's past was far more dangerous than she had ever imagined. And she would need every ounce of her strength, wit, and courage to face the storm already gathering on the horizon.

Outside the window, the city of Florence gleamed peacefully, oblivious to the secrets and vendettas brewing in the shadows. Alessia knew, with a certainty that chilled her, that her family's enemies were already moving, and soon, the past would catch up to her.
