Chapter 3 - The Murder of Carol Choppins

Ironic, isn't it? 10 pieces, scattered. Carol Choppins, married to Andy Choppins, close friend of mine. Found dead along the trail to Montreal. Her body, or what was left of it was found beside a tree, buried but not fully. The hounds were able to sniff it out. How sad it is that Madame Carol had passed, she was a great and beautiful lady. It was an axe that ended her, a large one. Only two people are suspected of doing the deed. Her husband, Andy, and a close friend to the family, the local lumberjack, Henry.

On the grounds of it being Andy, he said that he was in their home, watching the local news. When asked about what was being talked about, he answered correctly. Though there was also a radio found near the spot of the murder. Perhaps he had listened instead. Andy is a strong enough man, strong enough to wield an axe at least. Strong enough to swing said axe and cut something or someone down. I had visited their home to do further investigations, looking around their room, I had found Carol's diary. Inside were the many arguments she and her husband had. Some get heated enough to the point of them not conversing with one another for weeks. Of course her last entry in her diary was on the same day as her murder, and here she speaks about another argument they had, one about groceries. Perhaps this argument had gone too far. I looked around more, asking Andy if he had owned an axe before. He said no. It was hard to converse with him, which was reasonable. He had just lost his wife. Their children were quiet too, most likely finding it hard to even comprehend why their mother won't be able to come home anymore. It is difficult to see Andy as the perpetrator, after all, why would an argument about groceries lead to death by an axe?

Henry, the local lumberjack, lived near the Choppins. Living near the trail where her body was found. Being a lumberjack, he would have definitely owned an axe, and sure enough, he had lost one recently. He was a close friend to Carol and Andy, typically spending the holidays together. To the Choppins children, he was like an uncle to them. I visited his home, looking for evidence. The second spot of the rack of axes was vacant. I looked around and found old pictures of Henry and Carol, it seemed that they were close even before she got married. There were hidden markings along the picture frame, HC. Perhaps they, or more likely, he had feelings that were never reciprocated. Henry offered me drinks and snacks, he even had an assortment of 9 different snacks. I asked if he had another, but he did not. A shame.

Considering the possibilities, neither of them seems to be the true culprit. Perhaps they are "hiding" something. Perhaps they conspired with one another. It was difficult to pin it on either of them. I have to look deeper, there has to be a way for this to line up. Or else, her murder would be left unsolved. How terrible would that be, for such a lady like her?
