The Shadow Conclave led Liora and Kael to a vast chamber suspended above the clouds, its floor woven of starlight strands that shimmered like liquid silver. At the center stood a towering pillar of flame—celestial fire that could burn both mortal flesh and divine essence.
"This," said the Conclave leader, his voice echoing in the cavernous space, "is the Trial of the Celestial Flame. To bind your souls and awaken the Starbond, you must endure it together. Your connection, your trust, and your hearts will be tested. Fail, and one—or both—of you will perish."
Kael's hand trembled as he glanced at Liora. "I… I don't know if I can."
She squeezed his hand. "You're not alone. We'll face it together."
The flame surged, licking upward, sending waves of heat and light that made the air vibrate. Liora stepped forward first. Instantly, her body felt pulled in multiple directions—visions of Aeris falling, of her wings burning, of Kael's soul fading into nothing. The pain was unbearable, but she focused on one truth: Kael.
Then Kael stepped into the light. His mortal body should have been seared instantly, but Liora's energy shielded him. Still, the flame sought their fears and regrets. Kael saw visions of a life without Liora, a world where she was gone, and his heart ached.
"You have to trust me!" Liora cried. "We're stronger together!"
He closed his eyes, reaching for her hand, letting their bond—fragile, yet unbreakable—anchor him. The flame flared one final time, then receded, leaving the chamber bathed in quiet starlight.
The Conclave leader nodded. "The bond is real. You survived because the Starbond cannot be broken—it exists in hearts willing to sacrifice, to hope, and to love. But know this: the Archons will not wait. You have little time."
