Chapter 118 - Chapter 14: The Hunters and the Hunted

The forest had become a graveyard.

Bodies lay scattered among the trees—raiders, by the look of their patchwork armor and scavenged weapons. Dozens of them. Maybe more. They hadn't died in a fight; they'd been slaughtered. Some were torn apart by massive claws. Others looked like they'd simply... stopped. As if something had stolen the life right out of them.

Strike Team Epsilon moved through the carnage with practiced precision.

General Valerius Kael led, his onyx armor drinking what little light filtered through the canopy. Behind him, Stitch's silver-filament form wove between the bodies, examining wounds with clinical interest. Korgath cracked his knuckles, eyeing the destruction with something almost like appreciation. Nyx's iridescent skin shifted through colors as they cataloged the scene. Jax's electrostatic field made the hair on the dead stand on end. Oracle's crystalline lenses spun, absorbing data, calculating trajectories. Nisha flowed through the shadows like they were water.

"The Monster Queen," Kael said, his voice like grinding ice. "The bounty on her head has drawn every hunter in the wasteland. These are the latest to try."

"And fail," Stitch added, a thin smile in his voice. "Spectacularly."

Oracle's lenses focused on a particular set of tracks—massive, feline, leading deeper into the trees. "Thermal signatures ahead. One large—the tiger. One small. Humanoid. Alive."

Kael nodded. "Move. Quietly."

They flowed through the forest like death given form, silent and absolute. The trees parted, revealing a small clearing.

She sat on a fallen log, surrounded by the bodies of those who had come to claim her bounty.

The Monster Queen.

She couldn't have been more than nineteen—at least in appearance. Her face was young but marked by a single scar running from temple to jaw. Blood—not hers—covered her clothes, her hands, her face. She sat perfectly still, staring at nothing, as if the slaughter around her was just another day.

Beside her, the tiger lay sprawled, its massive chest heaving with exertion. Its flame-mane flickered weakly, spattered with the same blood that covered its rider. It was hurt. Tired. But its golden eyes tracked the hunters with predatory intelligence.

Lily turned her head.

Her eyes met Kael's.

She didn't move. Didn't speak. Didn't flinch.

Just watched them with that empty, scarred face, waiting to see what they would do.

The Ranger Station

Wolfen paced the small room, his golden eyes moving from face to face. Eva sat in her chair, legs crossed, watching him. Maya leaned against the wall, her cropped hair catching the light. Derek and Leo hovered near the door. Jordan sat on the couch, his katana across his knees. Zoey and Lena occupied the kitchenette, while Dave remained in his corner, grey mask unreadable.

"Okay," Wolfen said, stopping. "The Architects put a bounty on Lily's head. That means every hunter in the world is going to be looking for her. Including professionals." He looked at Jordan. "Did they give you a way to contact them? Some kind of device?"

Jordan reached into his jacket and pulled out a small, sleek communicator—grey metal, a single glowing button on its surface. He held it up.

Wolfen took it, turning it over in his hands. He pressed the button.

Static. Then a modulated voice: "State your purpose."

"We need to speak to the Superiors. Send transport."

A pause. The others exchanged glances.

"Stand by."

Two minutes passed in silence. Then the voice returned:

"Transport en route. ETA twenty minutes. Coordinates have been transmitted to your device. Do not be late."

The line went dead.

Wolfen tossed the device back to Jordan, who caught it without looking.

Maya pushed off the wall, her eyes narrowing. "Why did you do that?"

Wolfen's smile was sharp. "For information.

The Clearing

Lily watched the hunters watching her.

Eight of them. Professionals. Not like the raiders scattered around her feet. These were Architect hunters—the kind sent when bounties reached a certain level.

She didn't move. Didn't speak. Just watched.

Tusk growled low in his chest, but a single touch from Lily's blood-covered hand silenced him.

Kael stepped forward, his onyx armor gleaming. "Monster Queen. You have something we want."

Lily's head tilted slightly. Just enough to show she was listening.

"Your head," Kael continued. "The bounty is substantial. Enough to make even us take notice."

Still nothing from Lily.

Stitch's silver form shifted. "She doesn't talk much, does she?"

"She doesn't need to," Nyx observed, their iridescent skin flickering. "Her creatures do the talking for her."

Lily's eyes moved slowly over each of them—cataloging, assessing, dismissing. Then she looked past them, into the forest behind.

Something moved in the shadows.

Something big.

Kael's hand went to his weapon. The others tensed.

Lily's lips curved. Just slightly. Just enough.

"You're not the first hunters to find me," she said, her voice quiet and cold. "And you won't be the last."

Behind the hunters, the shadows deepened. Eyes began to glow in the darkness—dozens of them. The sound of massive breathing filled the air.

Kael didn't turn. Didn't flinch. But his voice, when he spoke, held something new.

"Call them off. We're not here to fight."

Lily's smile widened. "Then why are you here?"

Kael met her empty eyes. "To offer you a deal."

The forest held its breath.

And somewhere in the darkness, the Monster Queen waited to hear what the hunters had to say.
