Chapter 11-The Night Everything Changed
Classes had finally ended, and I went straight to meet Jean Grey. As soon as she saw me approaching, she crossed her arms and raised an eyebrow, like she was analyzing every tiny detail about me.
"What do you need from me, Mrs. Grey?" I asked.
She smirked.
"You can call me Jean. And I wanted to talk to you about your powers. Since I know your true identity, Mr. Luka."
My heart nearly jumped. I frowned.
"What identity? I don't understand..." I tried to keep my voice steady.
Jean didn't waste time. She pulled a photo from the pocket of her coat and showed it to me. It was me, in the Red Hood suit... without the mask.
Shit.
I remembered exactly where I had taken it off. I sighed.
"Alright... since you know about me, what exactly do you want?"
She stared at me with complete seriousness.
"I need your help. Something happened. The number of mutants has doubled in the last few days, and many of them have joined Magneto. He's planning to destroy New York... and take control of it."
I took a moment to think.
"Why ask for my help? There are much stronger heroes than me."
"They wouldn't accept. Not officially" she replied. "And you're technically a mutant too. Your powers are directly tied to your mutagene. Not to mention... you have psychic powers. Magneto's main weakness."
She stepped a little closer.
"The X-Men and I will help. So? Do you accept?"
I swallowed hard but kept my posture.
"I accept. But I'll need your help too. You're the most powerful psychic I know."
Jean gave a faint smile.
"Deal. But I have to go now. See you tomorrow, Luka."
She left. I walked to the car, where Gwen was waiting for me.
"What did Jean want?" she asked.
"I'll tell you later" I replied, flicking her forehead.
She made an offended face.
"Well... it better not be anything too big."
We got in the car and headed toward Blackgate Enterprise.
That's when everything fell apart.
A giant lizard landed on the hood and flipped the car sideways. Gwen's spider-sense screeched, and she pulled me out on reflex, saving both of us.
I stepped in front of her.
"Gwen... what I'm about to show you, you can't tell anyone. Got it?"
She nodded.
I activated the Red Hood suit. The fight began.
It was Doctor Connors. Transformed again.
I dashed toward him, condensing fire and lightning into an elemental spear. I struck him right in the liver. He roared in pain, and I followed up with a kick to his jaw, starting a barrage of blows.
The Lizard tanked through it. He hit me with a punch that sent me flying. Before he reached me, I used telekinesis and launched him into a pole.
"EVA, analysis!" I shouted.
"I suggest Inner Dragon mode, sir."
I activated it.
My whole body ignited in draconic aura. My hands grew spiritual claws. My speed tripled. Every strike left deep wounds on the Lizard, and little by little he began slowing down.
When he finally passed out, I stored him in the inventory.
I rushed to Gwen, picked her up in my arms, and activated invisibility. We headed straight home.
In my room, without the suit, I took a deep breath.
"Gwen... that's what I wanted to tell you. I'm the Red Hood."
She stayed silent for a few seconds. Then she hugged me.
"I also have something to tell you" she said. "Remember when we went to OSCORP? Well... I kinda got some powers."
I raised an eyebrow.
"That's why Jean called me. She needs me against Magneto."
Gwen got clearly nervous.
"Against Magneto...? Luka, do you think you can handle that?"
"Me alone? No. But me and you? Yes."
She took a deep breath.
"Then... I'm in. But I don't know how to control my powers yet."
"I'll train you" I assured her. "We start tomorrow."
We went downstairs. I asked John to take Gwen home.
Then I went to free Dr. Connors in the lab. He was in his human form, disoriented.
"Doctor Connors, I want you to work for me."
"I can't... I still transform" he lamented.
"I'm going to cure that. And in exchange, you work for me. Do you accept?"
He accepted without hesitation.
I spent hours analyzing his DNA, using my IQ enhanced by Tony Stark's memories. I created the antidote. I applied it.
"Doctor... you're cured."
He got emotional. He told me his story, his family, his mistakes, the true intention behind the serum.
I touched his shoulder.
"From now on, you work with me. John is already going to get your family. Norman would definitely go after them."
His eyes brightened.
A bit later, his wife and daughter arrived. They moved into the house next to mine.
POV: Norman Osborn
"What do you mean he disappeared?!" Norman roared.
"Sir... after the fight with the Red Hood... Dr. Connors vanished. And his family too."
Norman slammed the table.
"Incompetent fools! First that spider goes missing... now you lose a whole man? GET OUT OF MY SIGHT!"
The scientists ran.
Norman took a deep breath.
"Looks like I'll have to do it... I didn't want to. But it's the only solution."
POV: Luka
I entered my room and said:
"Status."
A holographic screen appeared.
