Chapter 17 - Chapter 016: I’ve Come to Surrender

"Oh, this result is really… unexpected."

The visitor's voice carried both disbelief and unease as he stepped into the clearing, eyes falling upon the battered figure of Kenpachi Azashiro and the calm, standing form of Shigure. The devastation of the battlefield spoke for itself — scorched earth, spiritual residue flickering faintly in the air, and the heavy scent of blood.

Shunsui had known from the old man, Captain Yamamoto, that Kenpachi Azashiro was fighting someone here. The readings from the Seireitei monitors had shown that his opponent's reiatsu reached captain-class. Even then, he had imagined another division leader, not the quiet vice-captain who once sat across from him at a bar.

That the other fighter was Gosuke Shigure was, to Shunsui, nothing short of astonishing. The man he had once known as good-natured and easygoing was now standing over the fallen Kenpachi — alive, calm, and unreadable.

And what shocked him even more was who had lost.

Kenpachi Azashiro had held the title of Kenpachi for just over a year, yet that single title said everything. "Kenpachi" was the name given to the strongest combatant in the Gotei 13. Though the word "strongest" was often debated — for even Yamamoto, Unohana, and other captains stood near its pinnacle — no one could deny that any shinigami capable of earning that title ranked among the elite of elites.

The previous Kenpachi, Kuruyashiki, had single-handedly slain a Vasto Lorde in Hueco Mundo. And yet, this man before him — who had slain that Kuruyashiki — now lay defeated.

Even in Seireitei, power was a privilege. Kenpachi alone could disregard captains' meetings. His existence was deterrence incarnate — a living weapon of Soul Society. And yet today, that weapon lay broken.

How could Shunsui not be astonished?

Still, Shigure's demeanor remained unshaken. There was neither pride nor boastfulness in his eyes as he looked up at the approaching man. "Captain Kyoraku, you're here."

Shunsui gave a faint, incredulous smile, tipping his bamboo hat slightly. "Shigure… what happened here?" he asked, glancing between the fallen Kenpachi and his former drinking companion.

According to intelligence gathered by the Eighth Division, the recent disappearances of souls in Rukongai were suspected to be connected to Kenpachi Azashiro — but there had been no proof. All they had were reports that he had been seen entering Rukongai frequently, and wherever he went, souls vanished soon after. Suspicious, yes, but not damning.

And without evidence, Kenpachi Azashiro was still a sitting captain — untouchable by ordinary accusation.

Azashiro himself said nothing. It was Shigure who replied, his tone calm, composed. "As you can see, Captain Kyoraku, the captain and I fought here. As for the reason…"

His words trailed off, eyes shifting toward Azashiro.

Shunsui caught the hesitation and followed his gaze. He saw the faint, strange smile rising on Azashiro's lips. For the first time since the fight began, a shadow of life returned to the man's expression.

While waiting for Shunsui to arrive, Azashiro had reconsidered. Perhaps he did not want to die here after all. Not like this, not in the dirt.

Facing Shunsui's gaze, Kenpachi Azashiro said suddenly, "I want to see Central 46."

Shunsui's brow furrowed slightly. Central 46 — the highest judicial body in all Soul Society. The place where every shinigami accused of transgression was judged, from the lowest to the greatest.

That Azashiro would volunteer to face them was no small thing. And his tone — the calm beneath it — carried layers Shunsui could not yet read. But when he remembered Yamamoto's warning and the Rukongai incident, he began to piece it together.

He nodded once. "Very well."

Shunsui and Shigure escorted the wounded Azashiro back to Seireitei.

Their first stop was the Fourth Division.

Within the quiet, antiseptic hall of the healing division, Captain Unohana Retsu personally tended to Azashiro's wounds. Her hands glowed with serene green light as Kaidō flowed into the man's broken frame. The smell of antiseptic and blood mingled faintly in the air.

Through it all, Unohana's expression never changed. Her face remained calm — almost too calm — as though she were treating an ordinary patient, not a near-dead Kenpachi. The faint sound of her sandals brushing the floor was the only movement in the still room.

Standing nearby, Shigure watched silently. Though he had accepted the facts of this battle, a tangle of emotions remained within him. Few among the living shinigami knew that this serene woman — this "compassionate" healer — had once been the First Kenpachi herself, the most feared murderer of her age.

When the last of the healing light faded, Unohana exhaled softly. "It's done. He'll live." she said, stepping back.

Shunsui inclined his head. "Many thanks, Captain Unohana."

Her eyes remained tranquil. "It's nothing. This is the Fourth Division's duty." she said simply. Then, with a faint, measuring glance toward the unconscious Kenpachi, she added, "Still, I'm curious. Who could inflict such injuries upon a Kenpachi? There are few in Soul Society who could do so. Or…" — her tone lowered slightly — "has Hueco Mundo invaded again?"

The faint narrowing of her eyes made it clear that her curiosity was not idle.

Shunsui hesitated, remembering the wounded man's earlier request and the old man's silence on this affair. "Forgive me, Captain Unohana." he said finally, his voice turning grave. "I can't discuss that yet."

Unohana's brow arched ever so slightly. Then she gave a short nod. "I see."

No more questions followed.

When the treatment was complete, Shigure returned alone to the Eleventh Division.

Shunsui, meanwhile, escorted Kenpachi Azashiro to the First Division headquarters. There, behind closed doors, he spoke with the head captain. Whatever was said in that room, Shigure would never learn the exact words. But when Azashiro emerged, his expression was calm again — almost serene.

Not long after, under escort, he was brought before Central 46.

Central 46 — the highest judicial hall of the Soul Society — lay deep beneath Seireitei, where no sunlight ever reached. Inside that vast chamber, darkness pressed in like a physical weight. Forty sages and six judges sat upon their high seats, their forms hidden in shadow. Only their collective Reiatsu illuminated the space, heavy and suffocating.

At the lowest point of the room stood Kenpachi Azashiro — alone, stripped of his sword, but still radiating a faint, unbroken strength.

The first of the judges spoke, his voice detached and cold. "Kenpachi Azashiro Soya." he said, using the formal name. "Why have you come to stand before us?"

Azashiro raised his head. His expression was eerily calm, his voice level. "I've come to surrender."

The words echoed softly through the chamber — simple, unembellished, but carrying a weight that rippled through the darkness of Central 46 like thunder waiting to break.
