Chapter 14 - Spider: 14

I open the window, slide down the wall, and, under cover of night, fly across the rooftops towards the center of the Big Apple. Flying is simply a miracle, I never tire of repeating it. When you're at such a great height, your thoughts become organized. I have a feeling this will become my favorite pastime. After forty minutes of flying around the city with no results, I decided this can't go on.

So, what do I know about the crime situation in New York at the moment? The Kingpin is most likely in the "main tower," just like in the comics, but I'm not eager to go and check it out right now, without a plan and preparation, like the "other," not particularly smart Spider-Man.

Then there's Hell's Kitchen; should I drop in on Daredevil? While I was pondering the situation, three guys decided to break into a bakery right across from me.

"Couldn't they be the bakers, Spidey?" Well, the masks and crowbars kind of hinted. I jump onto the building and start climbing down the wall next to the criminals.

"Listen, Mal, do you think this is a good idea?"

"Don't be shy, Jones, I work in this hole. We made a big profit recently, there's a safe in Chang's office. Easy money. Or don't you need a fix?"

"Of course I do!"

"Then shut up and keep watch."

It's time to act. I jump down, grab onto a lamppost and knock out my hitherto silent accomplice in mid-air.

"What the..."

"You know, guys, I'm certainly no genius criminal mastermind, but... seriously?! A pie shop? You're robbing a pie shop? Work on your ambitions."

"What kind of clown are you?"

"Jones" said, rushing at me with a crowbar.

"Oh, where are my manners..." I dodge and, jumping, snatch the crowbar from the criminal's hands with a shot of web. "... allow me to introduce myself, your friendly neighborhood, the Amazing Spider-Man," I bow.

"Take him down, Mal!" The man, still undetected and unarmed, ran at me. I calmly jumped back to the wall and, firing my web, sent the guy flying into his accomplice. "Oh, you forgot to bring a note, do you have a pen?"

"Fuck you!"

"Rough," I say, covering the particularly talkative one's mouth.

"Don't moan, the web will disappear in time. I'm sure a police patrol will pick you up. Good luck!"

Wow, not bad, sure, they're just three small fry, but hey, you've prevented your first official crime as a superhero. Cool. What's next... Dock! Yeah, something sinister is definitely happening in the Hudson Bays under cover of night. And there's still time.

Having covered the distance in twenty minutes, I took up an observation position atop a construction crane. I've been in ambush for almost an hour now and nothing unusual has happened. Maybe I was foolish to think that all the city scum would crawl out of their holes on their own to be punished by a valiant hero? I'd better fly home; it's not bad for a first night. But before I could aim my wrist, suspicious movements began.

Suddenly, five cars pulled into the center of the loading dock. Guys of varying levels of grooming started emerging from them, but they all looked like gangsters. And when the next guy emerged from the last car, my jaw dropped.

Even with the mask on, it was Shocker! He's a Bruiser to his own people. Herman Schultz, often known as a freelance mercenary, working for the likes of Kingpin.

The sheer number of underlings suggests this possibility. I wonder why he's here. I move to the far container for a better vantage point. With a gesture, the leader ordered two guys to bring up the forklift. What do we have? Only twelve men, including Shocker himself. Six of them have M16s, which is a problem. The rest are lightly armed, but the situation is still complicated.

Basically, I can act like a rookie, which is essentially what I am. That is, attack, knock out the guards. Fight my first supervillain, but that would be short-sighted. Sure, cool, but stupid. There's something bigger going on here. A picture I can't see in its entirety. If I attack the perpetrators now, I might lose the organizer.

Conclusion? I'll keep watching. I'm a new horse at this racetrack, so these guys don't know that sometimes you need to look up at the sky. To avoid any interference from arthropods. Having finished unloading, the criminals returned to their cars and moved in a neat column toward the exit. I bet they're just happy. That everything went off without a hitch.

Having hooked onto the building, I set off in pursuit along the rooftops. The final stop was a warehouse in Forest Hill. The trucks drove inside in a group. Luckily, there was no guard on the roof of the building. Having landed, I began to peer into the glass windows on the roof. I wonder if they open?

Meanwhile, a lively working atmosphere reigned in the warehouse. A group of twenty young men, apparently based here, rushed to unload a truck. I can't say for sure if they were bandits or just workers. Maybe they were forced? Shocker himself began reporting to some dandy in a striped suit and glasses.

Well, the spitting image of an accountant. Okay, now I know where they're based, I'll hit the warehouse tomorrow, with a plan? It's unlikely they'll manage to complete everything they're doing there in one day. But it wouldn't hurt to check if the windows open.

"Hey, who are you? Freeze!"

Yeah, of course they're checking out the roof... I turn around slowly. "You guys won't believe me if I said that I'm just some lost parkour runner, right?"

"Hands up," the guy in the suit yells, pointing his Glock at me along with his partner.

"I'm raising them," I slowly raise my hands to the sky and quickly aim two shots at the guards' weapons. The web hits. With a quick movement, I knock the guns out of their hands. An interesting discovery was that they weren't scared, but rushed at me in hand-to-hand combat. I parried rather calmly until the moment when the silent second soldier lunged at me in a harpoon and broke through the viewing window! Thus causing us to fall. Or rather, him, because at the last moment I got caught in the web and, flying in an arc, landed on a pile of boxes.

"Well, well, well, you're with us too?" Shocker drawled with interest. Before he could finish his question, his minions had their machine guns trained on me. The workers also abandoned their previous activities and joined theirs, grabbing various small-bore weapons lying nearby: boards, crowbars, etc. Trained devils.

"I tried the 'pretend to be a hose' trick on your guys, but it didn't work," I said, shaking out my suit. "So allow me to properly introduce myself, Amazing Spider-Man, please love and favor me."

"In a couple of minutes, you'll look like an amazing corpse. We don't need witnesses here. Fire, boys!" Receiving the command, the men began firing. I jump behind the boxes and begin to circle the crowd. Running around the corner, I hook a web around the nearest large crate and launch it at the guys armed with firearms.

After all, as the saying goes, in a fistfight, knock out the guy with the gun first. The tactic paid off. Not expecting such agility from me, nor from my wooden friend, the boys were slightly disoriented by the shattered crate. I quickly close in on the confused shooters and smash into the nearest enemy, sending him flying. Catching a dropped machine gun in my web, I throw it at the second machine gunner, instantly knocking him out.

I dealt with the four closest enemies using Spider Bullets—small, concussive bolts of webbing. Knocking their weapons out, I flew over them with acrobatic maneuvers, punching two and grabbing the third by the neck with my feet, tossing him aside.

I cocoon the fourth, spin him around, and throw him at the approaching melee fighters. There are no gunners left.

"Not bad, lad, but I can't let some little bug interrupt the operation I'm responsible for. It's bad for business," Shocker said, pressing something on his gloves.

I also noticed that the aristocratic accountant had retreated from the scene. My spider-sense warned me in time about three bandits approaching from the right. I jump back. I got distracted in the fight! Unacceptable. I correct the mistake by furiously striking the three guys with the boards. One gets punched in the jaw, which clearly cracks. The second gets hit right in the face. The third gets a roundhouse kick to the torso.

My instincts kick in again. I jump back toward the boxes, and a loud, light-green energy ripple sweeps across the spot where I'd just been. Shocker has made his move.

The others retreated, seeing their boss enter the fray. And yet, I still have to fight my first supervillain today…
