Chapter 2 - “Strangers and Shadows”

Who is this strange guy, and why is he being so nice to me?" I wondered aloud.

Just then, he stepped in and said, "Um, here are some clothes. I didn't see you with any luggage, so I decided to get you some things from my closet. Oh, sorry—I'm Damian. Damian Ludwig. And you are?"

"I'm Isla. Isla Sunray," I replied.

With a small smile, he said, "Beautiful name for a beautiful damsel—I mean, nice to meet you."

I blinked in surprise. "Nice to meet you too," I said, my voice a little shaken.

Damian began showing me around the house. After the tour, I took a bath, then wandered through the rooms, doing a bit of dusting. Eventually, I made my way to the kitchen and was surprised by the abundance of supplies. I decided to cook something with what I could find.

Later, I headed toward the bedroom, but accidentally barged in on Damian.

"Isla! I'm in here!" he exclaimed.

Mortified, I turned away quickly. "I'm so sorry, Dame. I'll leave," I stammered, rushing back to the kitchen, my face burning with embarrassment.

"How could you be so careless?" I muttered to myself. "You should have knocked first, you stupid freak."

Moments later, Damian walked in. "Isla," he said gently.

"I'm so sorry," I blurted out. "I should've knocked. I didn't know you were in there—I swear to God."

"No worries," he said calmly. "I know it was a mistake. You wouldn't just barge in. Only the few days I've spent with you, and I already understand you."

Relieved, I smiled. "Okay. Anyway, I made something in the kitchen. I don't know what to call it, so I was coming to ask you—but, well, you know. Now that you're here, taste it and maybe give it a name?"

"Sure," he said. "Let's see what we've got."

He took a bite and paused, impressed. "Wow. I'd call this... Fushun Delois's."

"Then that's what we're going with," I said, grinning.

We had dinner together and then went to sleep.

That night, I dreamt of Resolina—how sorrowful they must be, realizing I was missing. I saw my parents crying, mourning me. Then my evil uncle appeared, ascending the throne and turning the fortress into a place of havoc.

I woke up abruptly, heart pounding.

Damian stirred beside me. "Isla, what's the matter? Is the fan too high? Is it hot? I can open the window. Or are you thirsty? Should I get you some water?"

"No, none of that," I said tiredly. "Just a bad dream, that's all."

He looked at me, concerned. "That's all? You sure that's the only thing?"

"Yeah," I whispered. "That's all. I'll just go back to sleep."

And with that i drifted once more
