Ruby's POV
The bullet whistled past Ruby's head, exploding the ceramic vase behind her into a thousand pieces.
Kate's piercing scream filled the cabin as Ruby tackled Elias to the hardwood floor, both of them crashing down in a tangle of limbs.
"Are you hurt?" Ruby gasped, her pulse hammering against her ribs.
"Get behind me," Elias commanded, but his voice came out strained and rough.
Something was wrong. Terribly wrong.
Ruby lifted her head and her blood turned to ice. Elias's skin had drained of all color, and crimson droplets were streaming from his nose.
The wine. That damned wine Kate had offered him.
Fury exploded through Ruby's chest as she spun toward the trembling woman. "What did you poison him with?"
Kate's entire frame shook like a leaf in a storm. "Only wolfsbane. Just a small amount. Not enough to be fatal."
