Ruby's POV
My heart hammered against my ribs as I shoved Jimmy into the cramped closet, the door clicking shut just as the nurse burst through my room entrance without so much as a knock.
"What exactly are you doing in here?" Her sharp eyes swept over my flushed face and damp skin. "You look like you've been running a marathon."
I dragged the back of my hand across my forehead, glaring at her with every ounce of defiance I could muster. "I was exercising. Since when is that against the rules? And last I checked, knocking was basic human decency. Who gave you permission to waltz into my private space?"
Not a flicker of remorse crossed her weathered features. "You ignored my calls. I was concerned you might have collapsed or worse. It was a safety check."
What a load of garbage. They were monitoring my every breath, and we both knew it.
"So what's this urgent matter that couldn't wait?" I crossed my arms, letting irritation seep into my voice.
