Synopsis
Kindaichi Nashi becomes entangled in a terrorist incident in the Middle East, where he receives the final manuscript of his friend, Tōgōji Shōichi. Shōichi’s dying message reads: “When I die, my four sisters will be murdered.” Soon after leaving behind those words, he perishes. Honoring his friend’s last wish, Nana-shi travels to Shōichi’s homeland—Gokumon Island. Whether by coincidence or fate, it is a place deeply connected to his grandfather, Kindaichi Kōsuke, whose past investigations had already stained the island’s name with tragedy. At the same time, Nana-shi’s cousin Kamiyama Nao receives a letter addressed to Kōsuke himself—an old request for help that somehow resurfaces now, decades later. As the island prepares for Shōichi’s funeral, the tension among the residents grows palpable. Whispers of inheritance disputes spread through the humid sea air, and an ominous sense of inevitability settles over the island. And then—at last—the first victim is found. A fan fiction depicting the feudal hierarchy, ancient customs, and deep-seated hatred that still linger within Japanese society.

Chapter 1 - NOTE

This fan work is a revised English version, translated with ChatGPT, of The Case Files of Nao Kamiya: The Gokumon Island Murder Case, which was originally distributed at Japan's Winter Comic Market in December 2024.

It is a fan fiction based on The Gokumon Island Murder Case, one of the most renowned stories in the Kindaichi Kōsuke series by the great Japanese mystery author Seishi Yokomizo. Although Yokomizo's works may not be widely known in the United States, they are essential reading for anyone interested in Japanese detective fiction.

Through this story, I hope readers can experience the unique atmosphere of Japan's feudal island societies — their rigid logic, ancient customs, human obsession, and the terror that arises from isolation and tradition.

The original version of this fan work was published in Japanese as a doujinshi. However, if there is enough interest after this English serialization concludes, I plan to release a full English edition as well.

Thank you very much for reading, and please feel free to leave a comment if you are interested.
