Chapter 224: Adaptation
Most people believe what they see is real.
And that is exactly why magic exists.
What you see is not necessarily reality. More often, it is what someone else wants you to see. Magic is deception, deception of sight, deception of perception. It becomes a word people use whenever something feels illogical, incomprehensible, or so overwhelming that the mind refuses to accept it.
A magic show is a feast for the senses. It is the performer carving a gap between themselves and the mundane, then standing on the far side of it with a smile. Only when you understand the method do you realize there was never anything supernatural about it at all.
That was how the world saw Aizen Sosuke and Kurosaki Ichigo.
Ordinary people could not understand why the two of them appeared and vanished like ghosts. They could not imagine how someone could tear space open with a casual motion and step through as if it were a doorway. They could not comprehend the eerie pressure that made captains and nobles alike hesitate, bow, or fall silent.
So they called it magic.
In truth, Aizen and Ichigo had done nothing strange at all.
For chakra, and for the knowledge they possessed, these were normal actions. If they moved, the illusion formed naturally.
Which raised the obvious question.
Kurosaki Ichigo was one of Aizen Sosuke's favorite individuals, and Aizen himself preferred the shadows. So why did they keep appearing so openly, so conspicuously, without fear of being killed? Why did they seem to enjoy walking into public view?
Was it because they believed their abilities could never be deciphered?
No.
Underestimating others was arrogance, and arrogance was the root of failure. Aizen never believed chakra was inherently superior to reishi. In essence, the utilization of energy was the same, only the route was different.
Was it because they believed their power could crush every enemy?
That was also false.
Aizen had not preserved much power. Ichigo had only begun learning recently. In terms of absolute might, the two of them were not the strongest pieces on the board. If anything, they were the weakest core members within their respective major forces.
So why did they act like this?
The answer was simple.
Information asymmetry.
This world did not understand chakra. It did not know what chakra could do. Even Mayuri Kurotsuchi and Urahara Kisuke, working at full capacity, had only managed a shallow grasp of it so far. When your understanding is partial, your conclusions become confident mistakes.
And right now, those mistakes were doing Aizen and Ichigo's work for them.
At this very moment, the two of them were effectively present in several locations at once. Yet because of the cognitive gap, nobody could see it.
The Shinigami did not know what the Quincy were seeing, because their information was not shared.
The Quincy did not trust what the Shinigami claimed to witness, because they knew the Shinigami had once been led by the nose by Kyoka Suigetsu, while the Quincy had remained unaffected.
So neither side realized that the instant one Kurosaki Ichigo was captured, another Kurosaki Ichigo had already appeared beside Aizen.
They did not know that an Aizen was lecturing in Rukongai.
They did not know that Aizen and Ichigo had also shown themselves in Hueco Mundo.
The two of them seemed omnipresent, yet through careful manipulation of knowledge and perception, their movements appeared smooth and complete. No gaps. No contradictions. So people naturally assumed every step was being monitored, that every move was under surveillance.
Only Urahara suspected something was wrong.
But the Seireitei's internal collapse had stripped him of authority. He could not see what was happening inside Seireitei itself, let alone in Hueco Mundo. All he could do was infer through indirect channels.
Every faction had a black cloth tied over its eyes.
None of them could truly see what the plan was.
From the outside, it looked purposeful. Evidence surfaced in perfect sequence. Old records that nobles wanted erased were dug up and displayed. Cruel stories, documented atrocities, ugly history, all dragged into the light with a precision that made people's heads ache. Even the Zero Division above seemed constrained by the commotion, unable to act decisively. Yhwach, too, moved according to the prophecy that haunted his mind.
Only Aizen Sosuke and Kurosaki Ichigo remained hidden inside the fog of history.
Then Yhwach surfaced, and the entire situation became even more volatile.
Seireitei began summoning nobles. It began releasing former captains and Shinigami. Some prisoners with lighter crimes were pulled from confinement and pushed back into the ranks. The Gotei 13 had realized this was no longer just a few captains rebelling against the nobles. If they wanted any chance of suppressing this disturbance, every Shinigami would have to contribute.
Captain Commander Yamamoto and the others could not see the future. They could only force order onto a system that was collapsing into turbulence.
But once a certain prisoner began using chakra, even that slim chance of stability seemed to die.
Aizen Sosuke and Kurosaki Ichigo left again.
Seireitei was humiliated, then enraged, then erupted.
And it meant nothing.
If you swing at the wrong target, all the strength in the world is worthless.
Mayuri Kurotsuchi kept himself locked behind his gates, showing no urgency even when the Quincy were mentioned. The nobles and the newly freed prisoners acted evasive, each pursuing their own interests. There was no shared hatred, no united front.
Expecting nobles and prisoners to protect Seireitei together was wishful thinking. The Shinigami themselves wanted to slaughter nobles. Many of those prisoners had been falsely accused and thrown into cages by those same nobles. The fact they did not rebel on the spot was already restraint.
Meanwhile, the Wandenreich had fully entered a wartime posture.
They were already at a disadvantage. They collected information obsessively, deciphered Bankai, reinforced their odds, sharpened their knives. Their final dream remained the same, storm the Soul King Palace, reshape the world, make it excellent again. That was what they told themselves, what they taught their children to want.
Yet how much time had passed?
Aizen Sosuke tore their king out into the open and exposed the secrets they had buried for a thousand years. Even if the Shinigami were too fractured to deal with them immediately, once Seireitei freed its hands, the Quincy would suffer. And what made the Quincy uneasy was that they could not judge whether Seireitei's current chaos was good or bad for them.
The unrest caused by chakra spread like fire. Those who gained power began hunting nobles in every corner. Theoretically, this was the best moment to strike.
But now Seireitei knew the Quincy existed.
Should the Wandenreich gamble on an unprepared enemy and launch an ambush anyway?
That kind of gamble was unacceptable for the Quincy.
Through it all, Aizen and Ichigo continued smiling as they stirred trouble everywhere, like provocateurs who arrived exactly when stability began to form. Seireitei, Wandenreich, even the districts of Rukongai, the moment something started to settle, the two of them would appear and force a new incident into existence.
Still, for the Wandenreich, there was finally one small relief.
One of the duo, the younger Kurosaki Ichigo, had been ambushed and dropped by a lethal dose of Argins. All that remained was to drag him before Yhwach.
Many Quincy waited in the shadows, waiting for their Majesty to take Ichigo's head and declare revenge upon Soul Society. Then the Sternritter would clash with the Gotei 13, and both sides would grind each other down until the foundations cracked.
That was what matched everyone's instincts. That was how things should have happened long ago. Without Aizen's defection, Seireitei would have been swallowed by war, and young blood would have celebrated the chance to kill.
But the seasoned members, and Yhwach himself, did not see value in that path.
Instead of letting the enemy unite, it was better to unite the enemy.
Kurosaki Ichigo standing before them was clearly that kind of material.
Yhwach's voice fell like a verdict.
"You are my son, born in darkness. Quincy blood flows through you. If Aizen Sosuke told you this, then he should have told you other things as well. My existence, and my relationship with you."
