Maya's POV
"Marcus is dead." The words don't feel real. "Morrison killed him. Just like he killed Thomas Warren."
"We don't know that," the officer says. "It appears to be a burglary gone wrong. Marcus was found in his mother's old house. Shot twice."
"And the evidence? The documents he went to retrieve?"
"No documents were found at the scene."
"Of course not. Morrison took them. Killed Marcus and stole the only proof of his corruption."
"That's a serious accusation, Ms. Black."
"It's the truth! How many people have to die before you believe me?"
The officer doesn't answer. Just leaves. Takes Morrison's side like everyone else in the system.
Derek sits on my couch. Head in his hands. "Marcus was helping us. Now he's dead because of it."
"Everyone who helps us ends up dead or destroyed," I say bitterly. "Maybe Morrison is right. Maybe we should stop. Give up. At least then people stop dying."
"And let him win? Let him keep your children?"
