Maya's POV
"I need you to lie very still," the ultrasound technician says. "There's something unusual I need the doctor to see."
My heart stops. "Unusual bad or unusual good?"
"Just unusual. Let me get Dr. Chen."
I grip Ethan's hand. This is supposed to be a routine eight-week ultrasound. Just confirming the pregnancy. Checking dates.
Not "unusual."
Dr. Chen enters. Studies the screen. Her face stays neutral. Professional.
"Maya, Ethan, congratulations. You're having twins."
The words don't register at first. Then they hit like a bomb.
"Twins?" I whisper. "Again?"
"Again. Two healthy heartbeats. Both measuring right on schedule." Dr. Chen points at the screen. "Baby A here. Baby B here."
"That's impossible. I already have twins. Phoenix and Grace are only two. I can't have another set of twins."
"It's rare but not impossible. You're clearly predisposed to multiples."
"Five kids." Ethan's voice sounds faint. "We're going to have five kids under four."
