Chapter 18 - chapter 18

Sonia and David were deeply in debt. Hoping to escape their financial troubles, they secretly left the state where they lived, leaving behind all the people to whom they owed money.

They started a new life in a different town, far away. David hoped they could forget their past and build a future without the constant pressure of their debts.

However, their fresh start was short-lived. One day, a man to whom David owed a significant amount of money traveled to their new town. By chance, this man spotted David and Sonia going about their lives.

Recognizing them immediately, the man did not confront them. Instead, he quickly returned to his home state. There, he gathered all the other people David and Sonia owed money to.

"He's been found," he told them. "I know where David and his wife are hiding."

Now, united and knowing the location of their debtors, the entire group of creditors began to plan their next move to confront David and Sonia and demand repayment.

The Creditors' Plan

After learning where David and Sonia were hiding, all the creditors banded together. They planned a trip to the couple's new home to confront them and demand their money.

The Confrontation

They arrived at the house, but their timing was unlucky for Sonia. David was not at home; only Sonia was there that day.

The Arrest

The creditors did not come alone. They had brought police officers with them. Because of the outstanding debts and likely because there were formal warrants for their arrest for fraud or unpaid judgments, the police placed Sonia under arrest.

The Phone Call from Custody

After her arrest, Sonia managed to find a phone. She quickly called her husband, David.

"David, they've found us!" she whispered urgently. "All the creditors came with the police, and I've been arrested!"

David's Decision and Despair

When David heard the news, he was filled with fear and panic. He realized that running was no longer an option. Overwhelmed by guilt and fearing for his wife, he made a desperate decision.

He went directly to the police station in the state where they owed the debt and turned himself in.

The police, who also had a warrant for his arrest, immediately took him into custody. Now, both David and Sonia are locked up, facing the consequences of their debts and their attempt to escape.

The Family's Ignored Pleas

While all this was happening, Sonia and David had been largely on their own. Sonia's mother had not been in contact with them or offered any support for some time.

Before she was arrested, Sonia had repeatedly called her sister, Kemi, begging for help with their desperate situation. However, Kemi refused to listen and did not offer any assistance.

The News Reaches the Family

The news of Sonia's arrest finally reached the family. One of the other siblings (another sister or a cousin) heard what had happened and immediately called Kemi.

"Kemi, your sister has been arrested! She's in a police station!" the relative told her.

A Change of Heart

Upon hearing that her sister was actually in jail, Kemi's attitude changed. The situation was now too serious to ignore. She quickly sent their mother to the police station to find out what was happening and to see what could be done for Sonia and David.

This is where the story now stands: David and Sonia are both in custody, and their family, after initially turning a blind eye, has finally been alerted and is getting involved.

The Return

Sonia was taken by the police and the creditors back to the state where she and David owed the money. She is now in custody there, awaiting what will happen next, while David's whereabouts are unknown.
