Chapter 35 - THE HALLOW KING

"Sometimes the darkness is sealed inside the hero."

The words echoed in Aiden's mind long after the voice had vanished.

The fractured world around them had become unnaturally still.

No tremors.

No collapsing sky.

No shifting reality.

Just silence.

The kind of silence that arrives when something has finally stopped hiding.

Seraphine's grip remained locked around his wrist.

As if letting go would mean losing him.

Aiden barely noticed.

Because his attention was fixed on one thing.

The opening.

The wound in reality.

The place where the voice had come from.

His voice.

The Fragment stared into it with undisguised dread.

Aiden had never seen fear look so absolute.

Tell me.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

What is inside me?

The Fragment didn't answer.

Aiden stepped closer.

Tell me.

Still nothing.

Then Seraphine spoke.

"Aiden..."

He looked at her.

Her eyes were filled with something worse than fear.

Grief.

As though she already knew the answer.

As though she had known it for a very long time.

The realization struck him.

"You knew."

Seraphine lowered her gaze.

And that was enough.

The broken world groaned softly.

Reality bending around a truth that no longer wanted containment.

The fragment was finally exhaled.

Slowly.

Defeated.

"It doesn't matter what we call it."

A pause.

It has worn many names.

The sky flickered.

Ancient memories flashed above them.

Civilization is on the rise.

Civilizations are burning.

Entire worlds collapsing.

Each memory ends the same way.

With a throne standing empty.

The Fragment continued.

"Some called it ruin."

Another flash.

A world is disappearing.

"Others called it judgment."

Another flash.

A sky splitting open.

"But the oldest name..."

His voice dropped.

"...was the Hollow King."

Silence.

The title itself was incorrect.

Like reality disliked hearing it spoken.

Aiden felt a strange pressure inside his chest.

Not pain.

Recognition.

The Fragment saw it immediately.

And his expression darkened.

"The throne was never created for a ruler."

Aiden frowned.

What?

The Fragment pointed toward the distant vision of the twin thrones.

It was created as a prison.

Everything stopped.

The realization hit harder than any twist before it.

The king.

The queen.

The throne.

The split.

None of it had been about power.

It had been contained.

The Fragment looked exhausted.

Like someone carrying a burden for far too long.

"The king wasn't protecting the world from himself."

A pause.

"He was protecting it from what wanted to wear him."

The opening behind him suddenly widened.

Violently.

Reality screamed.

Something stepped closer.

Not visible.

Not fully.

But close enough to cast a shadow.

Aiden felt his heartbeat accelerated.

Not from fear.

From familiarity.

The place felt like home.

And that terrified him.

Seraphine immediately moved between him and the opening.

No.

The word left her instantly.

The shadow paused.

Then

It laughed.

The same voice.

The same tone.

Aiden's voice.

Except for the colder.

Older.

Empty.

You still choose him.

Seraphine stiffened.

The shadow continued.

Even after remembering.

A pause.

Then something impossible happened.

The shadow shifted.

And a face appeared within it.

Not Aiden's.

Not the Fragment's.

A woman's.

Beautiful.

Ancient.

Broken.

The Queen.

Elysia.

Seraphine staggered backward.

"No..."

The shadow smiled.

And suddenly Aiden understood something horrifying.

The Hollow King hadn't only been inside him.

It had touched everyone connected to the throne.

Everyone connected to the split.

Everyone connected to the story.

Including her.

The shadow's gaze settled on Seraphine.

You remember now.

Her hands trembled.

The memory struck me all at once.

A throne room.

A dying king.

A desperate queen.

And one final choice.

Not to save him.

To split him.

The silence shattered.

Seraphine collapsed to one knee.

Tears filled her eyes.

Because she remembered the truth.

The king never chose the split.

She did.

And Aiden suddenly realized the cruelest twist of all.

The person who had broken the king...

The person who had shattered reality...

The person who had created every fragment...

Was the one standing beside him.

Seraphine.

Or rather

Queen Elysia.

The woman he loved.

The woman who had ended the world to save it.

And somewhere within the shadow...

Something smiled.

Because the final pieces were finally remembering where they belonged.
