Chapter 43 - Mercy and Hate

"She is too dangerous! She must be destroyed!" Chris tightened his grip, determined to annihilate the evil spirit.

"Have Mercy, captain...not on her, but have mercy on yourself!" Cecilia's words hit Chris like a cold tsunami. His grip faltered but only for a second before resuming the pressure. Saori screamed in agony, her body writhing from pain, her arms and feet violently wriggling, trying desperately to escape.

"Captain, if you destroy her, you will become her!" Cecilia's words took Chris by surprise. His teeth gritting, he glanced at Cecilia.

With a wave of his hand, the doors of the kamidana opened. Chris then walks towards the small wooden temple. When she turned around, she screamed in terror; the doors of the sealing kamidana were open, ready to imprison her once more.

"NO! I won't be imprisoned again!" Saori screamed as she clawed at the hand that restrained her, desperately trying to save herself from a fate worse than death.

Chris stared at the evil spirit. "Destroying you will be too lenient a punishment," He sneered. "I hereby sentence you to suffer your worst fear…Imprisonment for all eternity!"

"NOOOOOoooooo…" The evil spirit's voice slowly faded into nothing as she was swallowed by the kamidana and its doors sealed off forever.

Cecilia watched as the evil spirit was swallowed by her dark prison. She then turns to the captain, but the concerned expression caught her off guard. "Are you okay?"

She nodded, but then she glanced at her blood-stained hands, and she remembered what the captain had to endure to help her be free. She placed her hands on Chris's tattered and blood-stained clothes. "You're hurt."

She reached out to see how wounded Chris was, but he just gently moved her hands away. "I'm fine, don't worry about me." The two then heard the doors forced open, and in came Martinez and the PR crew

Chris approached one of his crewmen and handed him the Kamidana. "Take this to the temple in Binondo and hide it there; the good energy of that temple will reinforce the seal and lock the spirit for all eternity." The crewman accepted the miniature wooden shrine, bowed, and vanished into black mists.

When they went out of the pagoda, Cecilia was dumbfounded that the people outside were blissfully unaware of the chaos that had recently unfolded. "Why are the people not panicking and walking around like nothing happened?"

"That's where the PR crew comes in handy; they can mask anything related to the world of the dead from the prying eyes of the living," Martinez answered with gusto

Chris cleared his throat, and the helmsman shrank away behind him. "Since we are done here, better that we take the child back to her family."

Chris held the child's hand, who is now conscious. "May I accompany my daughter back to my husband? Please, I just want to see my family one last time." Cecilia tugged on Chris's arm, and when he looked at her, she had this begging look on her face that just made him shake his head and say, "Okay."

Chris teleported the four of them to where Emily's family temporarily stayed. Before knocking on the door, Kaori knelt and removed the amulet around her daughter's neck. "Mommy?" She quickly embraced her mother. "I miss you, Mommy. Where have you been? I had a nightmare that some old lady was haunting me."

"I'm so sorry, sweetheart, that you need to endure such frightful things. But everything is going to be okay now, just always wear this, okay, and no more bad ghosts will ever come near you again." She hugged and kissed Emily once more, tears streaming from mother and daughter. "You be a good girl, okay? Always follow what Daddy tells you and take care of him for me, okay, sweetheart?"

"Are you not going to stay? Are you leaving me, Mommy?" The girl said her voice breaking up from the knowledge that her mother is going to leave her. "Please take me with you," clings to her mother, refusing to let go

"I'm so sorry, my child, but you can't go where I'm going. Always remember that Mommy loves you and that I will always be in your heart." Despite assuring the child, Emily just hugged her mother tighter, and her voice cried louder. "I have to go, sweetheart, I'm sorry, but you have to stay with daddy…I love you!" She then placed the amulet back around the child, and she slowly dissipated.

"Mommy? Where are you, mommy?" the child cried. The door to their apartment opened, and Pablo came out only to see his daughter crying. He quickly lifted his daughter, "Thank goodness you're back," embracing her tightly. Emily also hugged her father, and they both went inside their home.

Kaori, Cecilia, and Chris all watched the warm yet heartbreaking scene from a distance. "Please, let's go, take me to the barge before I decide to be a wandering spirit," She begged the two as she sobbed heavily

With his hands on the two women's shoulders, the three disappeared into black mists after vanishing. They reappeared back in the gold deck of the Twilight. Deep in tears, Kaori takes Chris and Cecilia's hands. "Thank you, thank you so much for saving my daughter." She then hugged Cecilia. "I know what you sacrificed for my daughter, and I can't even begin to thank you."

"I know how it feels to have this curse, the pain and suffering that comes along with it. I don't want such a fragile child to undergo what I had to go through growing up. The captain also endured…" She turned around, looking for Chris, but he was no longer around. Like before, he vanished. "Where is that person again?"

Chris entered his quarters, his hands shaking with pent-up anger. Walking to the middle of the room, he glanced up towards the wailing portraits until he found the portrait he was looking for, the portrait of the very first ferryman, the ancestor who incurred the wrath of the anitos.

"Why did you do it?" He shouted at the wailing portrait, "This is all your fault! I won't be here if it wasn't for you!" He lifts and throws the chair away, only for a new one to take its place. "You and that evil spirit just prove that even family cannot be trusted!" He paced back and forth. "I hate you! I hate you all!" he exclaimed, pouring out the anguish and pain that was bottled up in his heart.

Suddenly, he clutched his chest as he felt his heart racing. He looked at his hand, and it was flickering. Chris stumbled to his knees, his body started to flicker as well, his head began to spin, and his eyesight slowly dimmed until he passed out on the floor, amidst the wailings of all the previous captains of the barge of the dead.
