Chapter 37 - Unsettling Reality

Cecilia placed her hands inside the pockets of her pink blazer. "Sorry…So, did we get the information?"

"Just enough to work on, but it still doesn't answer a lot." He extended his hand to her. "Come on, let's go, I have enough information to find her." She reached for his hand and lifted her glance towards him. She was taken aback, surprised to see he was glancing at her.

Electricity crackled from their joined hands, and the two stared at each other as light slowly enveloped them. When the light vanished, they found themselves looking up at a medium-sized two-story house. The two walked towards the house, Chris raised his hand to press the doorbell, only to see that he and Cecilia were still holding hands. A wave of embarrassment crashed over the two, and they quickly let go of each other as if they were holding something scalding hot.

Cecilia was about to speak, but Chris quickly pressed the doorbell to escape the awkwardness. After a while, a man maybe in his mid-thirties opened the gates. "Are you the exorcist my mother called?" Chris nodded, and they were let in by Pablo. They were led inside the house and into the living area, where Pablo's mother and sister were waiting.

After sitting down, Chris started to ask questions: "Your daughter-in-law Kaori, was she a Miko before?"

The family exchanged glances, and Pablo answered, "Kaori was a Shinto priestess, yes. I went to Kyoto fifteen years ago for work, and that was where we met. After my contract was over, we got married there, and she came back with me here."

Chris was about to ask more questions, but Emily started to scream from her room, alarming everyone. "The child? Where is the child?" Cecilia asked

Pablo quickly led them to Emily's room. Chris entered the room and quickly sensed an ominous presence. "Everyone out of the room now!" he instructed them, urgency lacing every word that he spoke.

Emily's father was able to get out, but the door slammed closed before Cecilia could even move. "Pink! The child, protect the child!" Chris stood alert, his head scanning his surroundings.

"Get away! Get away from her now!" an eerie and ghoulish voice shouted. Cecilia quickly cradled the writhing child. "Get away from her!" the voice shouted.

Chris suddenly glanced to his left and extended his arms to reach within the shadowy corner, his hands trapping something in his grip. He pulled his arms back, and within his grip was the soul of Kaori, struggling to be free of his vise-like grasp. "Let me go! Let me go, my child, stay away from my child!"

Chris pulled the helpless soul closer to him. "I can crush you into non-existence if you don't answer my question." Kaori stared into Chris's abyss-like eyes. "Why do you haunt your daughter?"

"Haunt my daughter? I was protecting her! And now the evil blood has taken over her body, because I wasn't able to strengthen the seal," Kaori shouted while tears rolled down her face. "Emily, no!"

The spirit's words hit Chris like a fireball. He slowly looked behind him, and to his surprise, Emily was floating in midair, a sinister gleam in her eyes. With one arm, she had Cecilia in a choke hold, strangling her.

"The girl? The girl is the demon?" he lets go of Kaori and confronts Emily. "You! Let her go and leave the girl's body at once!"

The demon only laughs, "You who is bound to the barge of the dead, have no authority over me," her raspy voice mocks the Twilight's captain. Demon Emily lifts Cecilia and looks at her, "I don't have any need for you," and tosses her towards Chris.

He easily catches Cecilia and gently places her down. He marches to demon Emily, he extends his hands as if strangling someone, "No one is beyond my authority." The child began to choke; she felt a tightening grip, making breathing almost an impossible task. "If you don't want to let the girl go, I will rip you away from her body!"

"Do it! And you will rip the girl apart as well!" The possessed Emily snickered at Chris's surprise, "You may be able to reach my soul despite being hidden in this girl. But as long as I am inside this body, what happens to me happens to this poor girl."

"Grandmother, why? Emily is your own flesh and blood!" Kaori said screaming

"What did you say? Grandmother?" Cecilia was shocked at the revelation, "Why would the demon be her grandmother?"

"Because she is Sato Saori, my ancestor!" Kaori revealed to the two

Saori took advantage of the confusion; she let out a force wave that destroyed the house's foundations. The walls of the house began to crash down, and the metal beams that supported the second floor and roof started to bend and break.

Chris saw that the second floor was about to crash on her, so he let go of Emily and ran towards the human. Cecilia closed her eyes as she saw concrete and steel falling directly at her. She stumbled and was on her back, cringing, when she felt she was unhurt; she opened her eyes. "Captain?" she uttered when she saw Chris on his hands and knees, carrying the weight of the entire second floor on his back.

Cecilia stared at Chris's face as he strained to lift the immense weight with his back, so as not to crush her. "Are you okay?" he asked.

Cecilia was surprised by what Chris said. When she saw blood drip from his head, she didn't expect to, but to show concern: "Captain, just leave, go, don't mind me."

"I can't concentrate on teleporting us out of this! I can't hold it much longer," He said to her, "Go help the humans!"

"What about you? You'll be crushed!" expressing her concern and fear for Chris's well-being

Chris could feel his arms buckling. "Don't mind me! Just go now…HURRY!" Cecilia, seeing the urgency in Chris's eyes, crawled away until she was able to stand and run. On her way out, she helped Pablo and his family to escape, leading them out of the crumbling house.

Outside, once she was sure the family was safe, Cecilia turned around to go save Chris, but the horror was painted in her eyes when the structure was destroyed, crushing anything and everything underneath its weight
