Krysta's POV
The sound of Valerie's voice hit me like a physical blow. Years. So many years since I'd heard anyone from my family speak, and now her familiar tone came through that phone line like a ghost from my past.
The tears came before I could stop them. I didn't even try to hold them back.
Nathan's eyes never left mine during the entire conversation. His steady gaze became my lifeline, the only thing keeping me grounded as my world shifted beneath my feet. I should have trusted him from the beginning. Nathan wouldn't fabricate Miller's feelings for Valerie, wouldn't exaggerate what existed between them. What I heard through that phone was unmistakable love flowing both ways.
My heart shattered knowing what this revelation would do to her. When she learns the truth about Miller, it will destroy her. The thought of being the one to deliver that crushing blow makes me sick, but she deserves to know. Someday, I hope she'll understand that I did it because I love her.
