The moment my stepmother stepped out of the bedroom, I collapsed onto the mattress and exhaled deeply. My pulse hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird fighting to escape. She was growing suspicious. I could read it in every glance, every careful word she chose when speaking to Gavin.
The resemblance was impossible to ignore.
Gavin carried Andre's features like a mirror reflecting the past. Those same penetrating dark eyes that seemed to see through everything. The identical strong jawline that tensed when either of them concentrated. Even their mannerisms matched perfectly - the way they both rubbed their temples when thinking hard, how they tilted their heads at the exact same angle when listening intently.
