Chapter 17 - Second Calm

Hikaru Amateru

Hikaru was annoyed. Like any other teenager, he wasn't experienced in dealing with mental breakdowns. Unfortunately, the person he had deemed a rival WAS undergoing one.

Hikaru shivered, remembering Bakugo's expression. It was empty, utterly soul-crushingly empty. It was the look a starving man had when he dropped his last bit of food into the ground. His eyes had been wide, his body frozen, his lips shivering. What could possibly be going on in that dude's head?

Hikaru couldn't understand Boomboy's obsession with Midoriya. It was holding him back. At the moment Katsuki Bakugo no longer has a clear goal. Did he want to be the best? Did he want to beat Deku? Kill him? Make him pay for challenging his world view?

Whatever. I said my piece. Everything else is up to him. I'm sure he'll lock in eventually.

The next draw had already been made. Team I vs Team B.

Hikaru grinned. Todoroki was on team B. Endeavor's protégé, I bet he's strong as hell.

"Ah jeez this is so bad." Hagakure muttered. "Todoroki's gonna give us frostbite."

Hikaru chuckled. "Relax. No matter what he does, we'll be better off than Midoriya."

The boy had been carried out in a stretcher, face exploded and arms completely shattered. Honestly, Hikaru would have rather lost than wrecked his body to that extent. Someone should tell that kid his fate isn't decided by his win in class exercises.

"That isn't comforting!" The invisible girl shrieked.

"Well, it's the best I can offer at the moment."

Hagakure sighed. "So… what's the plan?"

"Huh?"

"You don't have one?" Hikaru's teammate said, her voice going up an octave.

"Was I supposed to?" Hikaru asked tentatively.

"OF COURSE YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO YOU DOLT." His teammate thundered.

"Alright alright, calm down. Give me a second, I'll think something up."

Hagakure began muttering to herself incomprehensibly. Something abouts boys and braincells. Hikaru was sure it was a compliment. After all, HIS braincells were perfectly intact and far more numerous than someone like Boomboy.

A bulb lit up in Hikaru's head. "I have an idea!"

"What is it?"

"So basically, What if I just go and 1v2 the other team while you just sneak in and take the hostage back!"

"THAT'S A HORRIBLE PLAN."

"NO IT ISN'T"

"YOU'RE GONNA BE BEAT UP, FROZEN, AND THEN BEAT UP AGAIN."

"Please! I got first in the practical exam! That has to count for something!"

"Those were robots! You can't shoot lethal beams at your classmates!"

"I'll win without them!" Hikaru argued.

"How are you going to use your mirrors in a building?" His teammate shot back.

"I'll figure something out!"

"Figure out us a path to the infirmary more like!"

"That doesn't make sense!"

"Shut up!"

"Fine!"

Silence fell between the two. One second. Two seconds. Three.

"Soooo…" Hikaru started.

"Yeah?"

"We're going with my plan, right?"

A tired sigh could be heard. "Give me one good reason why I should go along with it."

Hikaru hummed. "Well for one, I'm the only one who has to face Todoroki and risk getting turned into ice cream."

Hagakure's gloves froze.

"Hey Hikaru?" She said sweetly.

"Yeah?"

"I think you had the right idea."

Hikaru nodded solemnly. "I usually do."

He felt a pat on his back. "Well then! Go get 'em Mirrorboy!"

Hikaru grinned. Oh, divine chalk stick! Grant me success in my upcoming battle.

Shoto Todoroki

Shoto's classmates were decidedly an odd group of individuals. Some stuck out more than the others but Shoto made sure to register everyone. They all had their own unique quirks (personality traits not the powers) and Shoto couldn't help but feel worried about fitting in.

Everyone was so vibrant. So full of personality. And there he was, a husk living for nothing but a goal his own family thought was foolhardy. It didn't hurt much anymore, of course. He had grown used to it.

Shoto's current teammate Shoji was, without a doubt, one of the gentler students in 1-A. Gentle or not, as far as Shoto was aware he was most likely higher up in the class hierarchy in terms of strength. Not that Shoto needed the extra help. Number 1. I need to be number 1 without using HIS side. I'll use my mother's quirk to reach the top. Nothing else.

His opponents were not the type he could hold back against. Hikaru Amateru, the top scorer of the practical exam, was, without a doubt, strong. If Katsuki Bakugo's strength was anything to go by, anyone who scored more than him was worth paying attention to. Hagakure Toru, on the other hand, was not strong in the typical sense at all. Invisibility was a rather novel quirk to have. Very few benefits in terms of attack, aside from sneak attacks. However, in this exercise, she has the advantage of not needing to fight her opponents at all.

Doesn't matter. I'll just freeze them all the moment they enter the building.

Toru Hagakure

Life was going perfectly for Toru. Despite her quirk, which lacked any attack capabilities, she still managed to squeeze her way into UA. Her teachers were the coolest people she had ever seen. ALL MIGHT WAS TEACHING HER. ALL. MIGHT. THE BIG MAN HIMSELF.

Even Toru's classmates all seemed cool. Except for Bakugo and Hikaru. The two top practical scorers were two peas in a pod. Toru had never in her life seen anyone more eager to get in a fight than those two. In fact… they would make for some amazing boy love inspo.

"Hey invisidolt. Why do I feel like you're thinking something offensive?" Hikaru's voice interrupted her thoughts.

A shiver ran through her spine. "How- I don't know what you're talking about."

The boy besides her raised his eyebrows. "Were you just going to ask how I knew?"

Wait. How did he know? I'm invisible! He can't even see my face!

"It was your breathing."

"What?"

"Your breath was sped up the way it would before someone laughs."

Woah. That's some creepy attention to detail. Wait. What if Toru just breathes loud?

"No, you don't."

"THAT'S IT." Toru pointed a finger towards Hikaru. "HOW ARE YOU READING MY THOUGHTS."

Hikaru grinned and raised his hands. "I wasn't! You were just saying them aloud."

"Oh." Her voice came out squeeky.

Toru wanted to die right there and then.

"THE HERO TEAM MAY NOW ENTER THE BUILDING."

Immediately Hikaru summoned one of his mirrors. Flashing Toru a grin, he flew up and entered through a window.

All right Toru! You're invisible! Hikaru's diverting their attention! Finding the hostage should be a piece of cake!

With her compulsory self-motivation done, Toru too began entering the building.
