Chapter 7 - Routine

After being forcibly enrolled into school, life quickly settled into a routine. Hikaru smiled pleasantly at the progress he was making with his quirk.

The mirrors, he discovered, had many hidden easter eggs within them. One being their ability to produce light, just like their owner. However, the light he could emit using the mirrors was far easier to control and condense.

Condensed light, as he liked to call it, was something akin to a laser beam. The feeling of creating them was similar to clenching a fist tightly, and the results were nothing short of outstanding.

Hikaru mentally patted himself on the back as he stared at what remained of the tree he had just shot condensed light at. It had a hole around half the size of a small animal, clean through the trunk. Hikaru could see parts of the hole still red from the heat produced by the beam.

Holy moly, I'm strong.

With the sheer amount of power produced by the mirrors, Hikaru had realized there would be limitations as well. One was the size of the beam – for the beam to be strong enough to cause the damage it just did, it had to be condensed small enough. The wider the beam, the weaker the strength of it.

Secondly, he had a limited amount of light he could produce. His current hypothesis was that his skin acted as some sort of solar panel, absorbing and storing light for later use.

Hikaru felt a flash of annoyance as he thought of what he considered by far the worst limitation he had. Despite his efforts, he was yet to be able to control more than two mirrors well enough.

Stupid brain that can't multitask. Stupid mirrors without autopilot. Stupid world-

"Hikaru! Look at my new baby!" A voice pierced through Hikaru's internal rant.

He turned to see Hatsume running towards him, waving what appeared to be a bomb.

He immediately took multiple steps back and placed his hands in front of himself.

"Hey Hatsume, is that what I think it is?"

Hatsume glared at him. "Don't call my baby 'it'! He's a wonderful baby boy!"

"Is he what I think he is?" Hikaru corrected himself, keeping his hands in front of him defensively.

"If you mean to say he's a bomb then you're absolutely right!" The girl said gleefully. She had said it so casually one would think she was informing him of the weather.

Which irresponsible dumbass is supervising this girl? Where does she keep getting shit to make these babies?

"And you thought it was a good idea to bring it to school…" I said flatly, making sure to speak slowly.

"Yeess." Hatsume replied, mimicking his slow tone. Her face was clouded with confusion. "What, is my baby not allowed here?"

Sighing, Hikaru went towards her and bonked her in the head. "It's a bomb you idiot!"

The bonk seemed to force the gears in her head to turn and her mouth moved to form an "O".

Before Hikaru could even think about further scolding her, she immediately pressed the bomb into his hands and stepped backwards.

"Don't worry Hikaru! I'm sure the teachers won't mind!"

No I'm pretty sure they WILL you dolt. Wait. Why the fuck is the bomb in my hands?

Hikaru's eyes widened and he prepared to throw it as far away as he possibly could.

Hatsume smirked and before Hikaru could do any such thing, pressed a button on some strange contraption of hers.

Mom. Dad. My sincere apologies. It seems my life is forfeit to a crazy four-year-old.

The explosion never came.

Hesitantly opening his eyes, he could see Hatsume looking at her button frowning.

"My baby! Why aren't you doing what you're supposed to?"

Relief washed over Hikaru and he began thanking every divine deity he knew by name.

Panic followed by relief seemed to be a trend when interacting with Hatsume Mei. Despite that, Hikaru couldn't bring himself to push away the kid. After all despite her flaws, she WAS still a genius. Hikaru figured if he was going to befriend any kid, it might as well be the genius.

"Don't worry baby! Mommy will fix you right up!" Hatsume cooed soothingly to the button she was currently holding.

The device in her hand caught Hikaru's attention.

"Is that a raspberry pie?" He asked her after coming to stand next to her.

She turned to look at him with a happy expression. "Close but not quite! This is a blueberry pie! It's so neat!"

Hikaru's eyes narrowed with interest.

Of course they had an equivalent of raspberry pie here. I should have gotten my hands on one of these earlier too.

It had been three weeks since Hikaru had fully awakened his quirk, and in the following days he had taken it upon himself to figure out what it took to get into UA.

Thinking of UA, Hikaru felt his heart thump with excitement. The moment he gets admitted into that school, some measure of fame and success was almost guaranteed. Not to mention the sports festival that would be broadcast to the entire country. He felt butterflies in his stomach just thinking about it. The entire country. Watching HIM. It would be marvelous.

Forcing himself out of the spontaneous daydream, he recounted his requirements. It was pretty damn obvious a school as prestigious as UA doesn't simply accept students purely based on their admission exam. Previous records and performances all matter.

As a result, it was absolutely vital for Hikaru to begin building an impressive profile from day one. Looking at the blueberry pie Hatsume was holding, Hikaru knew he had a perfect way to do it.

The programming languages in this world can't be much different from the ones in my old life right? It should be a piece of cake to learn them.

"Hey Hatsume?" Hikaru tapped her shoulder to bring her attention away from the broken button.

"Yes?" She said, tilting her head.

"Any idea where I could get one of these blueberry pies?"

The smile on Hatsume's face upon hearing that was almost blinding.

"YOU WANT TO LEARN HOW TO CODE TOO?" She exclaimed excitedly, jumping up and down.

Hikaru nodded. "It seems fun."

Hikaru's answer, intended to calm the girl had the opposite result as she threw herself onto his back for a hug.

Coding can't be the only thing I can work on. I've been too focused on my quirk.

Attempting to free himself from Hatsume's grasp, Hikaru sighed. How long till I get to go home?
