Chapter 3 - The Approaching Day

The next day, I wasn't in school. I had to do some things at the recruiter's office. I had never missed a day of school in my life. Always healthy and everything. I previously told teachers what's going on, so that I could plan accordingly when it comes to assignments and lessons. The students, however, don't know anything except for my best friend. I've known him since 5th grade, and we've been best buds since. He is 5'7 with a good fit figure. With a beard of an old man and the hair of some college Jock, he is quite reliable and always backs me up. He proceeded to tell me that he would take notes for me. Ben is reliable and is as good with studies as I am. He has always been there for me, and he has heard all about the stories of Layla and me. I head over to the recruiter's office. The building was in a plaza. With the view from the outside looking as if the entire plaza's design was based on the recruiting office, inside is even better, with it being cleaned every day. Not a single spec of dust on the floor or tops. No fingerprint in sight, even with the lights shining at an angle. The recruiter happens to be an officer. Mr. Scott is a big, muscular man with a nice face and dark hair. He is kind to everyone, no matter if it is his coworkers or those under him. He is a friend from the heart, no matter if he is a recruiter. He is always honest and refuses to say things that we want to hear, but need to hear. Today was the start of training. Some days of the week were after school, but other days were during school hours, where we were learning about each different field of work. "How did it go yesterday?" Mr. Scott asked. "She rejected me once again," I said. "It's a real commitment for this to last this long. I am surprised she never remembered." Mr. Scott said. "Let's continue with our work today," he continued. Today, we will be learning the history of our military as well as some things that they still do today.

Going around school the next day, Ben joined up. "So it has begun, hasn't it?" Ben asked as he also handed me the notes of the classes I missed. Yes, as of yesterday, it's going to be different. I have to go do stuff after school today, so I wouldn't be able to ask her out today either." "What a shame? It's been how many confessions? Every day. I definitely know that Layla would find something is off." Ben proceeded, "Just yesterday she looked at your seat a couple of times." I looked back at him with a look of surprise. It's unexpected because I never once saw her look at me.

We proceeded into the classroom as the school bell rang. Sitting in our seats, we started the lesson. During the lesson, I saw for the first time Layla taking glances over at me. I thought it was weird. When she noticed that I was looking back at her, she changed her face to disappointment and looked back at the teacher. When the lunch bell rang, I got up with my things and proceeded to the rooftop to eat. As I was eating, I was thinking someone would come up asking what's going on, but nothing happened. I then go back to class and continue with the next lesson. Layla, looking over, was curious to know why Jake wasn't in class yesterday. The teachers never said a thing, but she never thought anything too deeply about it. As the final bell rang, she expected to have an annoying bug ask her out yet again. She doesn't know why this boy likes her so much. It's just really annoying to her. Then her face showed a little bit of disbelief as Jake left the classroom. Feeling something was now off, she didn't know why he didn't say anything. Thinking that his confessions are dying down, she has started to be relieved. But something deep inside her was trying to tell her something. She proceeded to disregard it because she thinks it's something she shouldn't be concerned about.

This went on for a few weeks, and Layla was never asked out during the school day. I always ask her at times I don't intrude. Which is right after class. I proceeded to ask her out again. "No, like I said all the other times. But I have something to ask. Why have you stopped asking me out every day???" she was curious. She wanted to get an explanation, "I have just been very busy lately, that's all." I tell her. I was really shocked to hear this from Layla. My mind is urging me to just tell her, but because of the promise, I can't say a thing. He then leaves with a sad look. After hearing his response, she didn't have any thoughts as to what it was, but she finally felt something was off. Just like before, however, she continued to ignore it. After weeks and days of learning and physical training, Jake is getting into better shape, and the results are also showing at school. He continues to do his work and continues to get high scores on all of his tests. As graduation day was approaching, Layla had kept feeling that something was off. She had now paid attention to that gut feeling that kept growing. She never realized what that gut feeling was, and continued being oblivious.
