Chapter 4 - A Moon Knight

Diana, ten years old, angelic and innocent as a child should be. She sat on a tree branch, her face crunched up in confusion as she stared at the book in her hands, her father's book. She had snuck into his library and stolen it, her goal; to prove to her father that she understood perfectly well the weight of being a royal and therefore the strength to become a proper ruler. She wanted to show her father that she just wasn't a female child, she could be lots more and she could be a great ruler like him.

She was just a child and the things of the world fascinated her. She would watch her father and mother surrounded by overbearing Ministers there to offer advice to the King and Queen. She was fascinated by the authority her father's words carried, the fierce look her mother had whenever she handled political affairs in the absence of her husband, or how her presence could affect a gathering and everyone would look on and acknowledge her for the great woman she was and Diana would admire her parents and aspire to gain that kind of power.

She was just a kid and so were her ideals and dreams.

Little Diana looked back when she felt a presence and wasn't surprised to see her brother staring at her with that same scolding look he always gave her whenever she indulged in her childish antics that would later give way to a bigger problem.

"Seriously, the book of spells isn't a fairytale book you should be playing with." He said sternly but Diana ignored him and continued reading, her small mind not able to grasp anything from the book but she read it anyway because she didn't believe in giving up.

Dimitri showed irritation in his expression, dissatisfaction flickering in his eyes as he watched her.

He had come to dislike her eagerness to know, her childish curiosity which wasn't childish at all, the way she sought out to prove herself and show everyone how capable she could become.

He loved Diana, she was his sweet adorable sister but at times like this he felt small, jealous of her passion to know more, even more jealous of the effort she put in whatever she did. He never had any of that; passion and zeal, he was never curious and never put in any effort to do anything at all. He was simply indifferent to everything before him and there were times he wondered why.....Why didn't he have much zeal like other kids did? Like his twin sister did.

Diana's delighted scream pulled him out of his thoughts and his eyes widened as he watched her read out the spells in the book. This book of spells was high rank and only used by the King and the Captain of the Bureau.

How was she able to crack it? How?!

She was only able to decipher one and she was more than happy to show her work. So as she chanted the spell in her happy, girlish voice Dimitri stared on in horror, it played out in front of him like a bad nightmare. One minute he was playing with Diana and the next they were all grown up and he was now alone, in a cold dark world while Diana had risen to so much power he couldn't dare keep up with her. She now stared at him with scorn and disgust as if his mere existence irked her.

"No...." It came out brittle and soft, his voice shaking as the vision of Diana's scornful look replayed in his head.

"NO! NO No no no no!!!" He held his head as if doing so would push out the image from his mind.

Diana stopped reciting her spells and stared at her problem with deep concern, her eyes brimming with unshed tears because her brother's expression frightened her and because she could feel his emotions.

The clouds just above the tree turned dark and thunder rumbled loudly.

The vision replayed painfully in his mind and just as Diana reached out to hug her brother for comfort, Dimitri, not able to handle it screamed out and an invisible force blasted Diana away, she began to fall.

Dimitri stared, his eyes growing even more big with horror as Diana fell from the tree and then landed on the floor, her eyes wide and confused because she had not expected that to happen. She coughed out blood just as her back touched the ground with a painful scrunch and then she lost consciousness.

Dimitri stared, frozen in shock and trauma at what he had just done. He felt the pain in his chest and knew they were Diana's. His sister lay there, a small puddle of blood dripping from her mouth and suddenly he began to scream, a mad deafening scream filled with anger and fear even as he quickly descended the tree and rushed to Diana who laid limp and unmoving, the blood from her mouth staining her pink robe.

It was that same fear he felt, watching the blood pool around his own sister. He opened his eyes and found himself in an empty void, dark and cold, he looked around in surprise.

"Hello?" His voice echoed back and then a blinding light appeared making him close his eyes.

"Well hello there, I haven't had a significant visitor in decades." A smooth voice said and he opened his eyes to see a girl dressed in white flowing robe and stars floating above her head like a crown.

"He squinted, "Who are you?"

The girl rolled her eyes as a seat appeared before her, she settled on it majestically and stared at him.

"Really.... now's not the time to be cute." She said but Dimitri's blank expression told her he wasn't in any way trying to be cute.

She sighed and palmed her face, mumbling how unfortunate her work was but then she looked up and smiled brightly at him.

"They call me Galatea." She said and Dimitri felt cold washing through him

"The Moon goddess." He muttered in shock

"Oh gods, you Luminarians need to stop mistaking me for Her highness, I am merely a messenger of the Moon goddess." Galatea said with a slight frown

"But in the book of histories...."

"Yes it is true that I stopped the Great War in the past but only because Her Highness had infused her powers into me, like I said, I am merely a messenger." She smiled

Dimitri stared, caught off guard by how pretty she was, her skin white and milky, her white flowing hair and blue probing eyes.

Anyone would mistake her for the moon goddess.

"So what, the Moon goddess didn't think the war was significant and so she sent her messenger to end it knowing fully well her name won't be written in the Book of Histories as the one who put an end to the Great War?" He asked and Galatea sighed as though Dimitri was a kid who needed to be scolded.

"Luminarians are by far the worst candidates." She mumbled and Dimitri frowned

"Excuse me!"

In a flash she was before him and Dimitri backed away, startled by her speed and almost stumbling.

She touched his head with her fingers and Dimitri froze in place, his eyes widening slightly and then his face formed a painful expression as he felt a harsh sting on his forehead, he tried to pull away but his legs were rooted in place.

Galatea stepped back and Dimitri was able to move again, he glared at her and touched his head but the pain had eased off.

"What did you do?"

Galatea shrugged with a mischievous smile, "Giving you your powers. Congratulations young one."

Dimitri felt irked by this girl calling him ' young one '. He knew she was way older than him but her size made him think of her as a sixteen year old.

He snapped out of his thoughts when he remembered the vision he had earlier and approached her.

"Those visions...."

"Oh you mean the one of you becoming a great swordsman." Galatea grinned at him

"Screw that! My sister was lying in her own blood and she wasn't moving!" He snapped with blazing eyes

The smile wiped off her face and her expression turned deadly serious.

"You felt it didn't you, the pain and agony as if it was really happening. Just like ten years ago but only different because this was more painful." She said coldly and Dimitri backed away, stunned by her cold expression and how she knew about that.

~Well she was a celestial being so that made sense ~

"You must let go of your sister, free yourself from the obsessive protection you have over her and her life will be saved. Be warned, you don't have much time." She said, her voice echoing like it was several Galatea talking and not just one.

"What are you....Wait!" He reached out to grab her but she disappeared and then he was back at the garden.

It was like he had just blinked and not completely zoned out but now everyone was staring at him with different expressions.

Some looked shocked, some merely surprised, some happy and shocked at the same time like his father and there was lots of gasping. He looked back at Diana and saw she had a delighted look on her face, her eyes shining and her palm covering her mouth.

What was the fuss about? He wondered until he saw it. Marked on wrist was the shape of the crescent moon and five constellation stars surrounding it.

His eyes widened in recognition and he gasped.

Cassius stepped forward, he had the look of a proud father and King on his face.

"Ladies and gentlemen, We thank the Moon goddess for she has given us ....." He stopped to look at his son

"... A Moon Knight."

A loud cheer erupted and fireworks decorated the night sky while Dimitri stared at his wrist still in shock.
