Chapter 48 - chapter 48

Kael's POV

By late afternoon, the unpaved mountain trail had degraded into little more than crushed slate and exposed pine roots.

The air outside had turned punishingly cold, heavy with the scent of wet stone and static electricity. High above us, jagged granite peaks clawed into a low, violet sky, blotting out what little sunlight remained.

Aiden pulled the car into a hidden hollow shielded by massive, moss-covered boulders. The engine sputtered once and died, plunging the cab into a sudden, absolute silence.

I sat motionless in the passenger seat, staring up at the sheer rock face ahead.

It was calling to me.

It wasn't a physical sound, but a deep, resonant hum that vibrated directly against my ribs—a magnetic pull that made every drop of my blood ache. For three hundred years, my spirit had been halved, severed from the wellspring of my own existence. Now, the Great Core was so close I could feel its ancient, rhythmic throb echoing through the earth beneath our tires.

This place was not our old sanctuary. It was an ancient, forgotten hollow—a nexus where the ley lines of the earth intersected, creating a dense, swirling storm of natural spiritual energy that swept through the valley from every direction. The overwhelming tide of ambient magic acted as a perfect, chaotic shield. To any outsider, the core's immense signature was completely masked, lost like a single candle hidden inside a roaring furnace.

Only someone directly bound to the core—someone whose very soul shared its exact frequency—could ever hope to pick out its unique pulse amidst the noise.

A sharp, violent spasm suddenly seized my chest, making my fingers dig into my knees. The dark curse wrapped around my heart twisted violently, clawing at my lungs as it recognized its twin power just beyond the stone wall.

"We're here," Arith murmured quietly from the backseat, leaning forward. Her silver eyes were wide, scanning the towering rock face with sharp vigilance. "The ambient energy in this valley is suffocating. The masking effect is absolute."

"It has kept it safe for centuries," I rasped, forcing a slow, deliberate breath into my burning lungs. I reached for the door handle. "Let us end this."

Beside me, Aiden moved to get out too but I quickly held his hand and turned to look at him, meeting those bright, worried eyes.

"You stay here," I told him softly. I kept my voice firm, wrapping the royal command in a quiet gentleness.

Aiden blinked, his grip tightening instantly around my sleeve. "What? No. I'm coming with you."

"Aiden—"

"I didn't drive across three state lines and fight off rogue magic just to sit in the car like a damsel while you go into a dark cave!" he cut in, his voice rising with immediate, stubborn resistance. "We do this together. That was the deal."

"This is not a road trip anymore, Aiden," I said, turning my body fully toward him.

The warmth in my chest flared, but my face remained solemn—the expression of a prince preparing to march into a storm.

"Inside that mountain lies a concentrated sphere of pure, unrefined mana," I explained quietly. "The natural spiritual energy guarding this place will crush an unprotected human mind in minutes. And if the curse rebels when I touch my core..."

I paused, my chest heaving under my jacket as the curse gave another sickening tug.

"...I cannot shield you if I am fighting for my own sanity."

"I don't need you to shield me!" he snapped back, though I could see the sudden, suffocating fear lurking behind his eyes. "I need to know you're coming back out of that tunnel alive! What if something goes wrong? What if Eryn shows up?"

"If Eryn shows up, being trapped in a narrow subterranean vault makes you an easy target," Arith interjected softly from behind us. "Out here, you have room to move, to hide, or to warn us if the perimeter breaks. Inside, the raw pressure alone will bring you to your knees."

Aiden looked from Arith's somber face back to mine, his lower lip trembling slightly despite his desperate attempt to look brave.

Arith reached beneath her jacket, unclipping a heavy, silver-sheathed dagger from her belt. The hilt was inlaid with a single, glowing sapphire—a royal blade I had gifted her centuries ago, forged in my empire, carrying a concentrated ward of my own golden mana.

I looked at her in surprise but she just smiled at me, handing me the blade with a nod.

I took Aiden's hand, uncurling his fingers, and pressed the cold leather hilt firmly into his palm.

"This blade carries a localized barrier," I murmured, wrapping his fingers tightly around the grip. "If any dark magic or corrupted beast comes near this car, it will flare and repel them long enough for you to strike. Do not hesitate to use it."

Aiden stared down at the ancient weapon, his breath hitching as he felt the faint, warm pulse of my magic thrumming against his skin.

I placed my free hand against the side of his face, my thumb brushing softly over his cheekbone. "Knowing you are safe out here... it gives me the strength to shatter this curse. If you are in danger down there, my mind will split. I cannot afford to hesitate today, my heart."

A long, trembling exhale escaped his lips. He closed his eyes, leaning his cheek heavily into my palm for a second.

"You're an idiot," he whispered, opening his eyes to glare weakly at me through a sheen of unshed tears. "You better come back out with that core. Fully healed. No excuses."

A faint smile touched my lips. "I give you my word."

I leaned across the center console, pressing my chest into the hard console to close the remaining distance between us. My hand slid up to the back of Aiden's neck, fingers threading through his short hair to pull him in.

Our mouths met with desperate force, any remaining words swallowed up instantly. I parted his lips with my tongue, deepening the kiss to taste him thoroughly. It was a fierce, possessive claim—slow and deliberate, angling his head to pull him closer until there was no space left between us. I caught his lower lip between my teeth, nipping just hard enough to draw a soft gasping breath from him before sweeping back in, exploring every inch of his mouth with a rising heat that made the cold air outside fade completely.

Aiden whimpered into the kiss, his hands coming up to clutch at my jacket, holding on as if I were his only anchor in the world. We breathed together in the narrow space, neither of us willing to break the contact as I poured every ounce of my devotion into him, sealing a silent vow against his lips.

When I finally pulled back slowly, resting my forehead against his, we were both panting, our breaths mingling in warm clouds inside the chilling vehicle.

"Stay inside the vehicle," I instructed softly, my thumb tracing his swollen lower lip one last time before I tore myself away. "Arith, let us go."

"Right behind you," she said, opening her door.

I stepped out into the biting wind, the sheer weight of the mountain's spiritual energy washing over my skin in heavy, invisible waves. I adjusted my dark coat, taking one final look back through the windshield. Aiden was sitting frozen behind the wheel, holding the silver dagger tightly against his chest, watching me with absolute trust.

I gave him a single, decisive nod. He returned it.

Turning away, I led Arith toward a narrow fissure hidden between two massive rock faces. The second we crossed the threshold into the dark cavern, the roaring spiritual storm of the mountain wrapped around us, and the call of my core burned like a blazing sun in the dark.
