Chapter 317 - Chapter 317 Mind Fusion

Chapter 317 Mind Fusion

While Ryo was busy with academic exchanges and Carol was preparing for the scientific expedition to the Genesis Planet, James T. Kirk was plagued by another bizarre and unsettling phenomenon.

He noticed that his old friend, Dr. Leonard McCoy, had been acting increasingly... strange lately.

The doctor, known for his fiery temper, sharp tongue, and skepticism toward non-scientific matters (especially certain Vulcan customs), would occasionally blurt out remarks completely out of character.

For instance, during a discussion about Ryo, McCoy actually analyzed the energy conservation problem of cross-dimensional travel in an unusually calm and rigorously logical tone. He even subconsciously raised his hand to form the prototype of the iconic Vulcan salute, then abruptly dropped it as if burned, muttering "What the hell" to himself.

Or, he would suddenly look at his own hands and whisper in a tone mixing confusion and comprehension: "Fascinating..." — Spock's catchphrase.

At first, these subtle changes merely struck Kirk as abrupt, but as they occurred more frequently, an absurd and heart-pounding suspicion sprouted in his mind.

He dared not think too deeply about it until an unexpected visitor arrived at his door—Sarek, Spock's father and the Vulcan Ambassador.

Sarek maintained the calmness and dignity unique to Vulcans, but his deep eyes carried an unprecedented solemnity. Without exchanging pleasantries, he directly delivered an earth-shattering piece of news to Kirk:

"Captain Kirk, before his sacrifice, my son Spock performed a mind meld with Dr. McCoy."

Kirk felt a wave of dizziness. He certainly knew what a Vulcan mind meld meant—the sharing of consciousness, the transfer of memories, and even... the attachment of a soul fragment.

Sarek continued explaining in his steady, waveless tone, but the content of his words made Kirk's heart pound like a drum: "Spock's Katra (soul, consciousness essence) has not completely dissipated. A portion, the most important portion, is currently residing deep within Dr. McCoy's consciousness. This is also the reason for Dr. McCoy's recent abnormal behavior; he is unconsciously carrying Spock's thought patterns and partial memories."

Kirk instantly understood why "Bones" would say Spock's words and why he had those out-of-character actions. This was not a mental issue; this was... Spock existing in another form!

"This state is a massive burden and danger to them both," Sarek said seriously. "McCoy's human mind cannot endure the fusion of a Vulcan Katra long-term, and Spock's Katra cannot find true peace within a non-Vulcan consciousness. Over time, both of their souls may suffer irreversible damage."

He provided the only solution: "Spock's remains left on the Genesis Planet must be brought back to the Vulcan homeworld. Only in the temple at Mount Seleya, through the ancient Fal-tor-pan ritual, can the Katra be reunited with his body, allowing Spock's soul to rest in peace while also liberating Dr. McCoy."

This news shocked Kirk to his core, but it was followed by an immensely urgent sense of responsibility. Spock was still "alive," and his old friend "Bones" was suffering because of it. He had to help them! He had to head to the Genesis Planet immediately and retrieve Spock's remains!

However, the reality was that due to his prolonged mental distraction after returning to Earth, the Starfleet high command, based on psychological health evaluations, had temporarily relieved him of command and placed him on "mandatory extended leave." He currently had no authority to command any starship.

Making matters worse, his beloved Enterprise had sustained severe damage during the brutal battle with Khan. There had always been voices within Starfleet arguing that this Constitution-class starship was getting too old, and after this severe damage, calls for its decommissioning grew louder. Starfleet Command only approved the most basic structural repairs for the Enterprise to ensure it could safely return to spacedock.

At this moment, the battle-scarred legendary starship rested quietly in the orbital spacedock, like a hero awaiting final judgment, facing the bleak fate of being dismantled or converted into a museum.

With no command authority and no available starship, the path to the Genesis Planet to save his two closest friends seemed completely blocked.

Kirk stood before his apartment window, looking up at the starry sky with clenched fists. Frustration, anxiety, and worry over his friends' predicament threatened to drown him.

But he was, after all, James T. Kirk—the man who had created miracles out of desperate situations countless times. His gaze gradually shifted from lost to resolute. There had to be a way. He had to find a method to take back his ship, or find another vessel to head to the Genesis Planet.

Just as Kirk was being tormented by a sense of powerlessness and urgency, almost ready to take a desperate risk and consider using unorthodox means to seize the Enterprise or find another route, a familiar knock on the door interrupted his thoughts. Standing outside was Carol Marcus.

Her arrival surprised Kirk somewhat, and the news she brought surprised him even more.

"Jim," Carol's tone was direct and calm, carrying the pragmatism typical of a scientist. "The Federation Council has officially approved a comprehensive scientific expedition to the Genesis Planet, led by me. Magos Ryo will accompany us as the Chief Scientific Advisor."

Kirk's heart sank. An official mission... yet he was excluded from it.

Carol seemed to see right through his thoughts. She continued, her tone softening slightly: "I know your current situation. Starfleet has concerns about your state of mind; you were indeed not on the initial mission roster."

She paused, looking straight into Kirk's somewhat haggard yet still sharp eyes. "But I made a strong recommendation to the Council and Starfleet Command. I told them that no one understands the spatial characteristics and potential risks of the Genesis Planet sector better than you, and no one has more experience in handling emergency situations in unknown sectors than you. This mission needs your experience, Jim, especially when carrying an extremely important otherworldly visitor like Ryo. The security guarantees must be at the highest level."

Kirk was stunned. He hadn't expected Carol to fight so hard for him. At a time when their relationship was complex and could even be called somewhat estranged, her trust and persistence pierced through the gloom in his heart like a warm current.

"Carol... I..." Kirk didn't know how to express himself for a moment. A thousand words ultimately condensed into one heartfelt sentence: "Thank you."

Carol shook her head slightly, a complex smile appearing on her face. "Don't thank me, Jim. This is a rational judgment based on mission requirements. Besides... I know how hard Spock's situation hit you."

She didn't explicitly mention McCoy's anomaly, but her eyes indicated she knew the connection and the torment in Kirk's heart. "Perhaps this mission is also an opportunity for you to... regain your footing."
