Chapter 2 - The devil in the suit

Sarah sat in a corner café near Levine Enterprises, her cappuccino trembling slightly in her hand.

Through the glass window, she watched the towering building shimmer in the morning light — all glass and perfection.

This is where successful people work, she thought. And today, I'm one of them.

Five hundred dollars a month — it felt like a dream. For her, that was fortune.

She checked her reflection in her phone — perfect curls, neat lipstick, confidence in her eyes.

"Yup, this will do," she whispered and walked toward her future.

Inside the grand lobby, everything glowed like heaven. The receptionist smiled warmly, and the other employees greeted her as if they'd been expecting her. Sarah blushed; the attention was overwhelming.

"Ms. Sarah, please come this way," the receptionist said, handing her a salary slip and guiding her to the elevator. "The CEO would like to meet you personally."

Her heart thumped as the elevator rose — 10th floor, 20th, 30th… ding.

When the doors opened, she froze.

He was there — standing near a glass wall that framed the entire city below. His light brown eyes locked onto hers, and for a second, she forgot how to breathe.

Tall. Impossibly handsome. There was a quiet danger in his composure — the kind of presence that could command an empire with just a word.

He turned toward her, lips curving into a faint grin.

"Welcome, Sarah," he said, voice low and smooth. "You're the reason I called you here."

Her heart skipped. Me?

"I've read your writing. Even a commoner can create something extraordinary." His gaze didn't waver. "I really love you—"

Her eyes widened. Wait… what?

"—your work," he finished, smirking as if he'd read her thoughts.

She felt her face flush. God, get a grip, Sarah.

Then he stepped forward, extending a hand. "I'm Adam King, CEO of Levine Enterprises."

His tone shifted — firmer, decisive.

"And from today, you'll be my personal assistant."

Her breath caught. "P-personal assistant?"

He nodded. "You'll earn five million a month. But I need you for more than that, Sarah." His gaze softened for just a heartbeat, something unreadable flashing in his eyes. "Right now, Clara will show you around and explain everything you need to know. This evening, I'll fill you in on the rest of the details."

Before she could respond, he turned away, signaling the meeting was over.

Sarah followed Clara out of the office, her mind spinning. Five million. Personal assistant. Why me?

Something told her this job was nothing ordinary.

And deep down, she wasn't sure if she should feel lucky — or terrified.
