Chapter 3 - Getting the hang of it

In the Quietus forest that borders the four major nations of the west, a young Antaloupe wanders off from the herd, searching for more grass to eat.

The wild buck grazes the grassy side of the terrain, blissfully unaware of its surroundings, until—

*Rustle*

It hears a rustling in the nearby bushes.

Alert, it raises its head and gazes at the thick bushes.

Was it a predator?

A hunter?

Or something else?

It stared long and hard, trying to detect any sort of unnatural movement.

Yet, there was nothing there.

Only the green bushes that swayed gently from the wind.

It kept looking, and looking, until it saw something oddly unnerving.

One part of the bushes was unlike the others; it did not hold twigs and leaves, but held a rock; it did not sway, but it also did not stay still.

He felt it getting closer to him, and closer, and closer.

His instincts were screaming at him to run away, to stay far away from the abnormality.

Just as he was about to flee, the rock was thrown, aimed directly at him.

Time slowed, but he could not react fast enough.

He could only keep watching, and watching, and watching, until the rock was all he could see, and then—

*Thwack!*

***

Gottem.

I push past the bushes and walk closer to the fallen beast.

Fortunately, the throw had hit the beast's head, rendering it dead on the spot.

Unfortunately, the rock made its head a red mess that could barely be perceived as anything but ground beef.

But I couldn't be picky, so, eh, I'll take it.

After many failed attempts at hunting, I had finally caught my meal.

// NEW SKILL UNLOCKED! // → Sneak (E)

+====================================+

As well as a new skill—nice.

I look at the sky and realize the sun was going down.

Despite my newfound strength and power as an orc, I'd prefer to not deal with beasts lurking in the night.

Thus, I carried the deer—or something along those lines—carcass like a bag, with its four legs acting as the strap.

It took a while for me to find a viable spot, but eventually I did; an empty cave.

Along the way, I spotted a river flowing through the forest near the cave.

A nice place to bathe and clean myself or wait for prey to come.

After that, I gathered some leaves, twigs, and wood logs that were in the vicinity.

Then, I tried to start a fire by furiously rubbing two twigs together.

That didn't work, so I tried it with a twig and a wood log.

It worked, but the fire went out before it could start being a fire.

I tried multiple times and eventually started one.

…Even as a strong orc, if you don't know how to start a fire, you're done for.

While letting the fire get larger, I began to roughly skin the carcass using a pointy rock I found.

Using its hide, I made clothes that'd make even barbarians gulp in disgust.

A loincloth stuck together by a twig that pierced from one end to the other; blood still dripping down and some of the hide threatened to fall off.

Some of the flesh was unable to be ridden from the hide, so every time I moved, I could feel a mushy-like substance grind on the side of my thigh.

Considering this is a game world, you'd think they'd simply allow you to be able to craft perfectly fine wearable clothing, but noooooo, it has to have some 'realism'.

Those damn game devs.

Despite the complaints, I continued with my work.

After the hide, came the meat.

I, who wasn't a butcher, simply began to cut it by areas I deemed were fit to be cut.

Legs, rump, head (what's left of it), neck, and the rest of the body.

After the tiresome work, I grabbed all the pieces and placed them near the fire, inserting them one by one through a twig and roasting them.

After counting to three minutes, I took a bite of my work's fruition.

…It didn't taste very good.

…Actually, it tasted bad.

…This is how I'll be living for the foreseeable future.

Damn it.
